Also known as “indirect Speech” is used when we want to report what other people say or have said.
1. To make the report we usually change the tenses of the verbs used

GRAMMAR: SAY AND TELL

Say and Tell are very common in reporting what people say.
Remember: We use TELL if we want to specify WHO the person was talking to, and we used SAY if we
DON’T want to give this information.
Example:

When we report yes / no questions, we use IF before the reported question and we put the subject before
the verb.

We use be able, can and could when we want to talk about an ability and possibility.
a. The verb can is the easiest way to express ability

Example: I can swim for hours without getting tired
b. Could have three fundamental uses with different meanings
- As a simple past: She could fly to Berlin
- As a simple conditional: I could do it by myself, but I prefer to have some help
- As a present of subjunctive: They could come later today
c. What do we do in cases where we can not use neither can nor could? To meet these limitations, we
have the construction be able to.
- Future: I will be able to speak English by the time I'm thirty
- Present Perfect: I have been able to read in English for a long time.
- We also can use be able to instead of can / could to talk about abilities or possibilities
