One of the biggest misconceptions and fears in the Hindu society with respect to marriage is the presence

of Mangala Dosha or Kuja Dosha in the chart of a boy or a girl. I have seen a countless number of good
matches being rejected by people just because the boy or the girl has Mangala Dosha present in the chart.

Even the various Shastras of astrology differ as to in which houses it is present, what the exceptions are and
what the effects and remedies are. According to some authorities Mars is placed in the 1,2,4,7,8,12, from
lagna causes Kuja Dosha. Some authorities omit the 1st house and some others omit the 2nd house.

Some astrologers thump the table and quote Parashara and Varahamihira to prove their point. To start
with most of the astrologers only have a very hazy idea of the sastras. On top of that, let me tell you that
the existing shastras and their translations are not very pure! Take for example the Brihat Parashara Hora
Shastra of Rishi Parashara. In chapter 2 verse 5-7 we have the following: “Rama is the incarnation of the
Sun, Krishna of the moon, Narasimha that of Mars, Buddha that of Mercury, Vamana that of Jupiter,
Parashurama that of Venus, Koorma that of Saturn, Varaha that of Rahu and Matsya that of Ketu”.
Sounds great. However, according to astrology Parashara was the father of Vedavyasa who wrote the
Mahabharata. According to our calculations the Mahabharata period was 2500 BC to 3200 BC., or around
1200BC. according to the western historians. Buddha belonged to the much later and fairly authentically
recorded period. He died in 544BC. Then how did Parashara say that Buddha is the Avatara of Mercury
more than a millennium before? If he were forecasting then he would have clearly stated that “Buddha
avatara will be born”. Obviously some of the people who wrote the shastras added a few things of their
own!

Rishi Parashara, in his Brihat Parasara Horasastra, chapter 81, verse 47 said the following: “If Mars is
placed in the Lagna, 12th, 4th, 7th and 8th houses, without any aspect or conjunction of the benefic
planets, the husband of such a woman will certainly have an early death.” So it is clear that if Mars has the
aspect or association of a benefic, there is no dosha. It must be noted that in the very next verse, verse 48,
he gave the other important exception as follows: “The yoga in which a woman takes birth and becomes a
widow, if a male takes birth, he also becomes a widower. If a woman with the widowhood yoga marries a
man with similar yoga, such yoga will be cancelled.” So the 2nd exception given by him is that this feared
dosha is cancelled if both the girl and the boy have mangal dosha.

However by and large the majority of the astrologers include the 2nd house also in the mangala dosha and
accept the 6 houses. As there are 12 houses in a horoscope and as Mars in 6 houses causes Mangala Dosha,
it simply means that 50% of the people born have Kuja Dosha of some level. Hence it goes without saying
that this Mangala Dosha is not something which will ruin a person, because it is not the intention of God
to condemn half of mankind.

The prevalent misconceptions are that, if a person has Martian affliction it will either ruin the marriage or
will cause one’s death or the death of the partner. Especially if a girl has Kuja or Mangala Dosha, called
“Mangali”, she is looked upon as a devil by the mother-in-law. Nothing can be farther than the truth. First
let us examine what the Kuja Dosha is all about and how it affects marriage.

The planet Mars symbolizes courage, aggression, vitality, confidence, fighting spirit and warrior qualities. If
Mars is placed in any of these 6 houses, it gives aggressive tendencies to either the person or the spouse. In
certain cases if Mars is malefic to the native, it also gives danger to life, provided that other bad
combinations are also present. These two are the main negative qualities. Hence the first reason for the
“Dosha Complex” is that – in the olden days the ideal wife was regarded as one who is meek, obedient and
submissive. Hence a girl with the so called Martian afflictions, who is likely to have courage and fighting
spirit, was considered by our MCP society as a girl with “Dosha”. The second possible reason for the
“Dosha Complex” is that during the war torn middle ages when a lot of the sastras were written, a
“Martian person”, who is normally well built, courageous, aggressive and has fighting qualities, was a prime
candidate to be recruited by the king for his army and hence the chances of his death or serious injury were
quite strong. In the present changed circumstances it is foolishness of the highest order to be scared simply
because one has
Mangal Dosha.

However, Mangala Dosha is not something that can be ignored. It does cause marital discord. Before
marriage it is very essential to match horoscopes for Kuja Dosha. If a person has Kuja Dosha in the
horoscope the spouse must also have Kuja Dosha. This way the Dosha is cancelled. Otherwise both should
be without any Dosha. Various “authorities and experts” have given a lot of exceptions and cancellations
for the Dosha. They are so many that almost everything is cancelled! The truth is that in majority of the
cases the so called exceptions and cancellations do not work.

P.S.Iyer’s tips: In 1991 the late Sri P.S.Iyer, one of the acknowledged giants of Indian astrology and an
authority on the marriage aspects, gave a discourse to several budding aspirants of astrology in Mr.
K.N.Rao’s house and I was one of the fortunate ones to attend it. He was quite clear in stating that
Mangala dosha is present in 6 houses. This Kuja Dosha or Mangala Dosha must be examined from the
Moon, Venus and Saturn also. He even gave the details of the percentage of Mangala dosha in each house.
In 8th house the dosha is full, in lagna 1/2, in 7th 1/4, in 4th 1/8 and in 12th and 2nd houses 1/16. As
per the exceptions and cancellations, he was very specific about the following:

No dosha if mars is in its its own house or exaltation house. No dosha if aspected by a benefic.

If a strong benefic is placed in the 9th house then the dosha of Mars in the 7th and 8th is cancelled.

However he also advised that apart from the Mars, the planets Saturn, Sun and Rahu also cause similar
dosha! From the point of view of causing dosha, if Mars causes 100% dosha, Saturn causes 75% dosha,
Sun causes 50% dosha and rahu causes 25% dosha. These doshas must also be evaluated similarly!

As per the koota matching his advise was to give more importance to dina, gana, rasi, yoni and rajju and
less to the others. So much so for the nadi dosha fear!

The matching of horoscopes and especially the extent of Mangala Dosha is the job of an experienced
astrologer and must be done after carefully analyzing both the horoscopes.
Rakshasagana

The second major misconception while matching horoscopes of marriage is Rakshasagana. Once again this
becomes a highly objectionable thing in case of a girl.

While matching horoscopes for a marriage under the Koota matching system, the birth stars in which the
Moon is placed at the time of birth, called Janma Nakshatra, in which the bride and bridegroom are born,
are analyzed and matched for various compatibility factors. One of them is the Ganas of the nakshatra. All
the 27 Nakshatras come under 3 groups. They are Deva Gana, Manushyagana and Rakshasagana. If both
bride and bridegroom are born in the same Gana then the matching is supposed to be the best. So the best
combination is Deva-Deva, Manushya – Manushya and Rakshasa-Rakshasa. In the Gana matching this
combination gets 4 out of 4 points. The next best is between Deva-Manushya and Manushya-Rakshasa.
This gets a score of 2 out of 4 points. The last and worst combination is Deva-Rakshasa which gets a score
of 0 out of 4 points. This is as per the detailed South Indian Dasha Koota matching system. In the North
Indian Ashtakoota Matching system the Gana matching is allotted 6 points and you get either 6, 3 or 0.

Unfortunately too much importance is given to this Gana matching because of two reasons. Firstly as in
case of Mangala Dosha, the person born under Rakshasagana has more confident and aggressive tendencies
and hence this becomes a major taboo for a girl. Secondly a good Gana matching enhances prosperity.
However, what the average public and even a lot of astrologers fail to take into account is the fact that, out
of the total 35 point Koota matching, the Gana matching carries only 3 points. What is even more
important is the fact that out of the 9 planets we are only taking into account the Ganas of the stars in
which the Moon is placed at birth and totally ignoring the Ganas of the stars in which the balanced 8
planets are placed.

Hence it is foolhardy to attach too much importance to Gana dosha.

Sadesati

One of the most terrible periods, according to the believers in astrology, is the dreaded 7-1/2 years of
Saturn transit called “Sadesati” in North India and “Elinatishani” in South India. When the transiting
Saturn transits the 12th, 1st and 2nd houses from one’s Rasi, i.e., where one’s Moon is placed in the birth
chart, it is called Sadesati. ( Saturn takes 30 years to make one round of the zodiac hence 2-1/2 years in
each sign multiplied by 3 = 7-1/2 years).

While it is true that during this 7-1/2 years Saturn transit period people do experience some tensions and
troubles, it is nothing to be scared about. On an average every man has to go through at least 2 sadesatis
during his life time. The results of the sadesati transit vary considerably from person to person depending
on the planetary configurations in one’s birth chart. Even while giving some troubles and tensions, it does
not deny you success. For example when Mrs. Indira Gandhi became a Cabinet Minister for Information
and Broadcasting in 1964, she was going through her Sadesati! In January 1966 when she became Prime
Minister she was still going through her Sadesati!! There are thousands of people who not only got away
scot-free during sadesati, but actually prospered during it.

All kinds of dreadful results are forecast by the astrologers to scare the people and apart from living under
fear, people spend a lot of money quite unnecessarily on all kinds of remedies. Actually the pundits love
Saturn, Mangal, Rahu and Ketu, the fearsome four names in Indian astrology, as they have given more
money to them by way of remedies than the benefic like jupiter or sun!

There are plenty of remedies for sadesati, the most effective being the daily reciting of Hanuman Chalisa or
the Dasaratha Shani stotra.

Saturn, which according to Hindu mythology is the son of Sun God, is an excellent planet. No other planet
can give what Saturn can. In fact having a well placed saturn in ones chart is one of the best things to hope
for! When Mrs. Indira Gandhi re-elected PM, she was going through the mahadasa of Saturn. When
Amitab Bacchan was at his peak, he was also going through Saturn mahadasa. Unfortunately people and the
pundits ignore the positive side of Saturn and project it only as an evil planet.
Kalasarpa dosha:
This is another highly feared combination. You will be surprised to know that the ancient classics of
astrology have not even mentioned it! Yet it has become one of the most feared doshas, because Kal means
death and Sarpa means snake. When all planets are to one side of Rahu and Ketu Kalasarpa Dosha is
supposed to be caused. This is considered a very bad yoga which gives rise to misfortunes and is supposed
to be a major obstruction to ones progress. This dosha is said to be severe when all planets are within the
arc from Rahu to Ketu in their natural motion direction.

There are supposed to be 12 types of Kalasarpa doshas, based on the placement of rahu from the lagna to
the 12th house. These 12 have been named after 12 fearful sounding snakes: Anant, Kulik, Vasuki,
Shankhapal, Padma, Mahapadma, Takshak, Karkataka, Shankhanaad, Patak, Vishakata and Sheshanag. It is
not known who cooked up this nonsense, but rest assured that it is none of the Rishis from Parashara to
Varahamihira. Obviously some new 20th century “Rishis” of Delhi and U.P!!

The latest astro-stunt by the “Pundits” is the introduction of “partial kalasarpa dosha”. The basics
parameters of this are undefined, so anyone may have it!! A lot of unscrupulous astrologers are scaring
people about this dosha and extracting money for the so called remedies. The remedy of course depends
and varies according to the financial status of the innocent man!

From practical point of view this is not found to be a hindrance to progress. I have the horoscopes of a lot
of people who have this so called dosha and are doing quite well in life. One of the most notable
exceptions is the horoscope of Jawaharlal Nehru, the late prime minister of India. If someone can rise to
that level with kalasarpa yoga, then its not a bad one really!!

Definition

Kaalsarpa literally means “Serpent of time”. Basically this yoga is formed when all the seven planets get
trapped between Rahu and Ketu. This can happen in two ways

1. When all the planets are between Rahu and Ketu. This is known as “Udit Golaardh” meaning
ascending hemisphere. This is also known as “Grassit” yoga.
2. When all the planets are between Ketu and Rahu.. This is known as “Anudit Golaardh” meaning
discending hemisphere. This is also known as “Mukta” yoga.

The right way to understand which of the 2 ways this dosha is operating is to see by the motion of planets.
Rahu and Ketu move clockwise being always retrograde while rest of the planets move in an anticlockwise
direction. If the planets are moving away from Rahu, then they are considered between Rahu and Ketu. But
if the planets are moving into Rahu (as if Rahu is swallowing them) then the planets are between Ketu and
Rahu.

Cancellation of Kaalsarpa Yoga

It is to be noted here that if a plant joins either Rahu or Ketu in any house then this yoga gets cancelled.
This is true irrespective of the degrees of the joining planet in the house of Rahu or Ketu. E.g. let’s say all
the planets are between Rahu and Ketu, but Rahu is joined by Mars. Let’s further assume that the Rahu is
at 15 degress and Mars is at 23 degrees. Now from astronomy perspective Mars still lies between Rahu and
Ketu, but from Vedic astrology perspective the yoga gets cancelled. Same is the case if Mars is at 14
degrees in the same house.

Types of Kaalsarpa Yoga

Depending on where the position of Rahu/Ketu in the chart is, various types of yoga form.

Annant Kaalsarpa Yoga

When rahu is in the first House and Ketu in the seventh house and the rest of the planets are left to this
axis the Yoga which arises is the Anant Kaalsarpa Yoga. This is also called as Vipareeta Kaalsarpa Yoga
opposite Kaalsarpa yoga. Though this yoga has the power to give windfall gains to the native, it is bad for
marital life. Generally natives with this yoga get married late in life or can have problems in marriage life.
There could be problems to business or business partner as well. If the native becomes very hardworking
and pay attention to personal development, then this yoga can actually create a lot of good results. Life will
be full of struggle but theough the power of self-effort , the native can go very high.

Kulik Kaalsarpa Yoga

When Rahu occupies the second house and Ketu the eighth house Kulik Kaalsarpa Yoga arises. This
combination is bad for health. There could be diseases of the sexual nature or of the private parts. This is
bad for financial prosperity too. The native is worried on account of an insecure financial standing. They
may get into business problems and may face problems in accumulating money. The native may also misuse
his interest in occult practices.

Vasuki Kaalsarpa Yoga

When Rahu occupies the third house and Ketu the ninth house and the rest of the planets are located to
the left of the Rahu Ketu axis this yoga is formed. The native may have to struggle a lot to stand on his
own feet and get recognition and status in life. There could be sudden strokes of fortune or misfortune and
sudden gains. The positive effects will come only if the overall chart is very strong and there are no malefic
aspects on either 9th house or 9th lord.

Shankpaal Kaalsarpa Yoga

When Rahu occupies the 4th house and Ketu the 10th and rest of the planets fall in between this yoga is
formed. The native may have to face difficulties for domestic happiness, general happiness, comfort and
conveyance. The native gets trouble relating to work, progeny, health and marriage. However this yoga also
has the power of conferring high political success and windfall gains if Sun and 10th house are strong and
are being aspected by benefics.

Padam Kaalsarpa Yoga

When Rahu occupies the fifth house and Ketu the eleventh house and rest of the planets fall in between
this yoga is formed. The native struggles on account of children and education. The native may feel
emotionally insecure due to lack of apparent love from others. There could be delay in getting children.
The native should stay away from extra marital affairs as illegitimate children can destroy his/her life.
There are also chances of being let down/betrayed by near and dear ones. The native must try to develop a
balanced outlook in life.

Mahapadam Kaalsarpa Yoga

This yoga is formed when Rahu is in the 6th house and Ketu is in the twelfth house and rest of the planets
fall in between. The native has secret enemies and has problems in relation to one’s occupation. The native
may develop a negative tendency to play with the law of the land and may get into serious troubles on
account of this tendency. However if this yoga acts beneficially it has the power to confer power and
political success.

Takshak Kaalsarpa Yoga

When Rahu is in the seventh house and Ketu in the first house and rest of the planets fall in between this
yoga is formed. There may be difficulties regarding health, love affairs, progeny and marriage. There will be
a lot of struggle in life and success will come only after a lot of hard work and difficulties. This is also not
a good position for business partnerships as well as relations with opposite sex. The native must focus on
his people skills if this yoga is present.

Karkotak Kaalsarpa Yoga

When Rahu occupies the eighth house and Ketu the second house and rest of the planets fall in between
this yoga is formed. The native is short tempered and has many enemies. There may be dirty habits like
smoking, drinking and use of abusive language. This could also be the result of bad company the native like
to keep. There could be health problems and lack of harmony. There is also danger of getting into sudden
accidents.

Shankachood Kaalsarpa Yoga

When Rahu occupies the ninth house and Ketu is in the 3rd house and rest of the planets fall in between
this yoga is formed. Natives who have this yoga in the chart go through many ups and downs in life. The
progress in life takes a very bumpy road. Luck may elude the native. Relations with father and siblings may
also be strained. Native should stay away from the activities which may earn him bad name in the society.

Ghatak Kaalsarpa Yoga

When Rahu is in tenth house and Ketu in the fourth house and rest of the planets fall in between this yoga
is formed. There could be problems related to one’s profession. There could be sudden ups and downs in
one’s profession. The native must stay away from getting in to trouble with seniors at work. There could
be general unhappiness in native’s life. It could be due to problems at work, debt or some bad habits.

Vishdhar Kaalsarpa Yoga

When Rahu occupies the eleventh house and Ketu the fifth house and rest of the planets fall in between
this yoga is formed. The native must stay away from gambling and other forms of speculations. Problems
may also arise from progeny and education. The native must stay away from egoistical attitude as that may
mar his chances of good name in the society.

Sheshnag Kaalsarpa Yoga

When Rahu occupies the twelfth house and Ketu the 6th house and rest of the planets fall in between this
yoga is formed. The native may become very selfish and may also get into troubles with authorities because
of this. The native may have problems relating to litigation. This yoga may also give bad health. However
this yoga takes the native to a far off place for settlement.

How to Analyze Kaalsarpa Yoga

Contrary to popular belief the effects of this Yoga are not always malefic. Just having one of the 12
combinations described above does not mean that the native will invariably go through the results
described above. The whole chart needs to be analyzed in order to come to a conclusion. In my experience
following factors should be considered.

1. One must check the overall strength of the chart by looking at Lagna, Lagna lord, Moon and Sun.
If the overall chart is strong this will not let the kaalsarpa yoga have any major negative influence.
A weak chart on the other hand will not be able to protect the native.
2. Depending on the Rahu/Ketu position, determine which side of the axis has all planets. All the
houses of the side which is totally empty will feel the effects of this yoga. The houses in which
Rahu/Ketu fall will particularly determine the area of life which will be impacted negatively.
3. However if the lord of the houses falling on the empty side of the Rahu/Ketu are very well placed
(Exalted, in Friend’s house, in own house, aspecting their own house). Then those houses will not
suffer that much and negative effect will be reduced to the factors attributed to those houses.
4. Vasuki, Padam, Mahapadam, Shankachood and Vishdhar Kaalsarpa generally do not give bad
results if the overall chart is in a really bad shape. This is because of their association with 3rd, 6th
and 11th house in which Rahu/Ketu are considered favorable.
5. If in D-9 chart Rahu/Ketu fall in 3rd, 6th or 11th house, then the effects are reduced.
6. One must check the constellations of Rahu/Ketu as well. If they fall in benefic constellations (if
the lords are natural benefic planets) then they become more unfavorable.
7. Its impact will be more prominent during dasha and antardasha periods of Rahu and Ketu. This is
very important point. If this yoga is very strong in one’s chart, but the dasha does not operate till
very late in his life, then it really does not effect the native that much.
8. It causes severe hardships when related with Sun and Saturn or the lords of the houses occupied by
Sun or Saturn.

Remedies

Remedy for kaalsarpa yoga is a controversial subject. However in my humble experience the following are
known to have brought relief.

1. Recite Lord Shiva's mantra "Om Namah Shivay" 108 times daily.
2. Recite Mahamritunjaya mantra daily. Everytime a bad thought comes to your mins or you see
things going in the wrong direction, recite this mantra
3. Keep fast for 16 Mondays.
4. Give Blue or Brown cloth, wheat, mirror, sesame seeds, oil, iron and blanket towards charity
5. Aviod wearing black clothes.

Kalasarpa yoga is considered to be one of the not so good Nabhasa Yogas. This is sometimes associated
with physical deformity or moral weakness, misfortunes, deceit and treason. The positive qualities of this
Yoga are that, the native can acquire a capacity to do arduous work, with exceptional success in the fields
of studies, administrations, philosophy etc. Moreover one can fulfill his desires of his life, either in the
materialistic concept or in the spiritual scope.

“Kala” means time,'Sarpa' means Serpent and “Yoga” means combination. So Kala Sarpa Yoga means that
the soul is caught by the Serpent of time within the axis of Karma. It reflects unusual and unexpected life-
situations experienced by a person, according to his Karma of the previous birth.

It is formed when all 7 planets considered in Vedic Astrology (Sun, Moon, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn,
Mercury) are placed between Rahu (Moon's North Node) and Ketu (Moon's South Node) in the natal
chart. It is defined by the following sloka.

Agre rahur atho kethu, Sarve Madhya gata graham| Yogam Kalasarpakhyam,Nripa Sasya Vinasanam||
According to the above sloka “ Rahu must be ahead of the Ascendant and Ketu behind it; all the planets
should occupy between them; no planet should be in conjunction with Rahu or Ketu . This is a definition
for Kalasarpa Yoga.

Sarvanabho gasthishta thiyagu Sikhino, Anthrala rasigatha| 'Malyavadanthara rahithah Yatha thatha
Kalasarpa Yogasyala ||

Anuloma vilomathkala Dwidhoyam Kalasarpayogascha| Anthoykthasch anistom karithi Poorvo maha

subada||

Sampoorna sakala vibhavaha Samastha Nripavandhithakhri Kamalayuga| Rajadhi Raja Rajo Virajathee
Kalasarpa Yoga bhava||

From the above sloka, we can understand that: All the planets must be placed a between Rahu and Ketu
continuously, forming a chain without any break. Only this formation can be taken as the Kalasarpa yoga.

The Ascendant can either be within the chain or outside the chain Either Rahu or Ketu can occupy the
lagna. So the lagna has nothing to do with the formation of the Kalasarpa yoga. The yoga is of two kinds;
one is called the “Anuloma” and the other the “Viloma” The “Anuloma” type produces excellent results,
whereas the “Viloma” type produces undesirable results. In Anuloma type, Rahu is ahead within the six
rasis from the lagna and Ketu occupies a position behind all the planets. Here, one will acquire higher
position with all beneficent results. In Viloma type, Ketu is ahead within the six rasis from the lagna and
Rahu is posited behind all the planets. Here, one will suffer the maximum and lose his benefits.

When all the planets are located or locked up between Rahu and Ketu, the planets can arrange themselves
in various possible positions to activate the Kalasarpa yoga. Such conditions can be briefly mentioned as
follows:

If the Sun is in the 8th house from Rahu, or When Rahu or Ketu is in the 8th house from Moon,
Kalasarpa Yoga is activated. The Kalasarpa Yoga is predominant, when Rahu or Ketu is located in the 6th,
7th, and 8th house from the ascendant. When Rahu or Ketu is in Kendras, the adverse effect of the
Kalasarpa yoga is greater. When Rahu or Ketu is in Trikona, the good effects of the Kalasarpa yoga
predominant. Depending upon the movement of the planets either towards Rahu or Ketu, the yoga is
named either as Kalasarpa yoga or Kalamrita Yoga.

Both the Yogas are formed, when all the planets are suitably located between Rahu and Ketu . Some
astrologers consider Kalasarpa Yoga is Viloma type of Yoga and Kalamritha Yoga as Anuloma type of
Yoga. In Southern states of India, yet one more condition is given. When Rahu goes towards its exaltation
position, and the other planets follow suit, it is said to be a benefic yoga, giving good results to the native;
on the other hand if Rahu goes towards its debilitated position followed by other planets, it is said to be a
malefic yoga, giving bad results to the native.

One school of thought says that when lagna, Sun, Moon or any one of the planets is away from the
sequence of Kalasarpa arrangement, the yoga is said to be nullified, but another school of thought insists
that there will be nullification, only when two or more above said factors are away from such arrangement.
So conceptually, it has been accepted that occupation of the planet between Rahu and Ketu is the essential
condition for the Kalasarpa Yoga.
Since the Nodes of the Moon are associated with Karmic attributes, the yoga inflicts certain restrictions
over a natal chart. It expresses karmic nemesis.

The Kalasarpa Yoga will be mostly operative between the ages of 39 and 45 years.

When the Lagna is not included in the yoga and goes out of the axis of Rahu and Ketu, lesser will be the
adverse effect.

Kalasarpa yoga is not like other yogas generally formed by the combinations of Mars, Sun or Moon,
producing enrichment or penury. The encirclement of all the planets in the natal chart by the two nodes
makes the individual to enjoy the fruits of previous Karma. If a person suffers at the present birth due to
the bad deeds of the previous birth (Sanchita Karma) and do good at this birth (good Prarabdha Karma),
with Kalasarpa yoga being present in the horoscope, then the suffering in the present birth will be gradually
changed into good. The native will have good worldly life with spouse and children.

It has been found that if Rahu or Ketu conjoins with any planet either in the ascendant or in the 7th house
from the lagna, a partial cancellation of the yoga occurs, which results in Raja Yoga at the respective
attributed house. The native will enjoy either good or bad according to the dispositions of the lords of the
ascendant and the 7th house in the natal horoscope.

The impact of the Kalasarpa Yoga is greatly minimized, if three or more planets are exalted or in
parivartana or the lords of the 2nd, 4th, 9th and 10th occupy the Trikona or Kendra houses, without
debilitation, inimical positions or aspected by malefics.

Kalasarpa yoga formed during the transits of Rahu and Ketu plays a vital role in the mundane affairs,
generally causing unexpected natural havocs and calamities. According to Vedic astrology, the Kalasarpa
yoga does not include the influence of the outer planets like Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

Different types of Kalasarpa yogas Since Rahu and Ketu are placed at 180° to one another, they can form
twelve different types of Kalasarpa yogas.

Famous personalities having this yoga in their charts[edit]

Surprisingly none of the ancient Hindu astrological texts ever mention about this KSY (Kaala-Sarpa Yoga).
The first mentions were seen only from 20th century. But Ashvalaayana Grihya Sutra mentions methods of
worshipping Kaala and Sarpa in the chapter of Graha-Poojana (Worship of Planets), which is a clear
evidence of Kaala and Sarpa being related to some planet needing propitiation, and since all other seven
planets are named explicitly, only Rahu and Ketu can be linked to Kaala-Sarpa in that Vedic text. if a
planet is between nodes even if in the same sign of any node, then no KSY occurs.
Some astrologer blow KSY out of all proportions to make it all-destructive combination. But there may be
other powerful yogas mitigating the effects of KSY. Moreover, evil planets in 3rd, 6th and 11th houses
give good results. Therefore, KSY is benefic in these houses, as in the case of Dhirubhai Ambani. Many
astrologers think KSY is a modern invention and do not believe in it. Many famous personalities
throughout this world have this Dosha as listed below,[1] but none of them show any of the characteristics
mentioned about this dreaded dosha:[2]

 Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru (First Prime Minister of India) struggled till 54th year. Thereafter, he
became internationally a well known person of high reputation and regard. His horoscope is a very
specific example for Kalasarpa yoga.

 Dhirubhai Ambani (Indian businessman) who had powerful Saturn in its own sign in the house of
wealth in D-1 (main birthchart) and Sun in own sign in ascendant in D-2 which is divisional of
wealth. Thus, other powerful yogas can subdue KSY in respective fields.

 Margaret Thatcher (Former British Prime Minister)

 Nelson Mandela (Former South African President)

 Alfred Hitchcock British film director and producer

 Rajinikanth (Tamil Cinema Actor)

 Chiranjeevi (Telugu Cinema Actor)

 Surbhi Bhardwaj ( south indian actress)

 Sachin Tendulkar (Famous Indian Cricket Player

MAHAPADAM KAAL SARP YOGA/DOSHA (KAAL SARP YOG SERIES ARTICLE 7)

This article focuses on the effects and remedies of Mahapadam Kaal Sarp Yoga/Dosha.

Lord Brahma’s son Kashyapa had four wives. Kashyapa’s first wife gave birth to Devas, second to Garudas,
third to Nagas (snakes) and fourth to Daityas (demons). The third wife was called Kadroo, so Nagas are
also known as Kadrooja. Kadru was mother of one thousand Nagas. Some prominent names being
Sesha,Vasuki, Takshaka, Anant, Kanwal, Karkotak, Kalia, Aswatar, Padma, Mahapadma, Shankh, Kulik,
Pingal etc.

Mahapadma is one of the species of powerful snakes like Vasuki, Takshak, Karkotak and padma. Vishnu
Purana has mentioned about different species of snakes in their text, it also talks about Mahapadma.
Mahapadam Kaal Sarp Yoga

If all the planets are placed between sixth and twelfth house where Rahu is placed in the sixth house and
Ketu is placed in the twelfth house in a Horoscope, which means all the planets are enclosed between Rahu
and Ketu moving from Rahu (placed in sixth house) to Ketu (placed in the twelfth house), then
Mahapadma Kalsarp Dosha is created in the native’s horoscope.

Effects of Mahapadam Kaal Sarp Yoga /Dosha

Here is my analysis of presence of Padam Kaal Sarp Yoga / Dosha in a horoscope:

Sixth house is the house for enemies, diseases, competition and maternal support. Presence of Rahu in the
sixth house can amplify the negative effects on these attributes.
Twelfth house is the house of expenditures, losses, journeys and salvation.

A Kaal Sarp Yoga with Rahu in 6th house and Ketu in 12th house will have following negative effects on
native’s life:

 When a person having above mentioned arrangements of planets between Rahu & Ketu he will
have many powerful enemies who will give problems. These enemies will be strong, may be hidden
and will always be victorious. The enemies of this person will not confront him openly and work
against him secretly and will give him much damage.
 The person with Mahapadam Kaal Sarp Yoga in his/her Kundli will be prone to health diseases.
The native is likely to spend huge amounts of money on health treatments and will not live a
healthy life.
 The native with this Kaal Sarp Yoga in the Kundli will travel a lot and change a lot of places which
will have a negative impact on the household life. He or she will face a lot of disappointments and
stress throughout the life.
 The person will have much expenditure in wasteful things and will have very less savings.
 He will be unpopular with his in-laws.
 In case of female, she will always get bad behavior from her in-laws.
 The native will not get the desired support from his/her maternal side. Infact when the native is
passing through a Mahadasha or Antardasha of Rahu, his/her maternal uncle (Maama ji) will have
to face a lot of problems.
 He could be imprisoned also and will have punishment in the hand of government.
 The native’s old age will be full of distress.

It is not mandatory that the person suffering from this Kaal Sarp Dosha will only have negative effects on
his life. There are examples of some very successful persons who had this Kaal Sarp Dosha in their Kundli.
For Example Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru the first prime minister of India had Mahapadam Kaal Sarp Yog
in his Kundli.

A Kaal Sarp Yoga with Rahu in 6th house and Ketu in 12th house depending on other planet and house
combinations will have following positive impact on native’s life:

 The person despite hidden and powerful enemies is likely to be very courageous and brave.
 Native has the power to benefit in politics or high official Government position.
 The native will get all the material pleasures through his own hard-work and abilities.
 The person with this Kaal Sarp Yoga in his Kundli will have a very sharp mind.

Cautions and remedies

The problems mentioned above can vary from person to person depending on the intensity of
“Mahapadam kaal Sarp Yoga” and placement of otherplanets in the native’s horoscope. But the bad effects
of this Yoga / Dosha can be reduced with some cautions and with the help of some specific remedies like:

 Jaapa of mahamritunjaya mantra for one lakh twenty five thousand (125000) times. The remedy
will be completed with kaal sarp maha pooja of Lord shiva.
 Coronate lord Shiva with milk and water for 30 days during Shravana Maasa to reduce the malefic
effects of Mahapadma Kalsarp dosha.
 On the day of Naag Panchmi (Shukal Paksha), Shiv Ratri or Shravana Monday the following is to
be offered to Lord Shiva - 14 pairs of silver Naag-Nagin, milk, curd, rice, mishri, sugar, desi
ghee, white chandan, dhatura, fruits, 14 flowers of akora, 14 flowers of lotus etc.
 A silver ring of snakes and gemstone of Onyx will be useful in overcoming the negative effects of
Mahapadma Kalsarp Dosha.
