GUIDELINES TO START A READING CLASS

Tell students that in this unit they will read fiction and
nonfiction selections that explore different aspects of
the world's seas and oceans.

Students will learn reading comprehension skills,


including recognizing cultural context, Identifying
cause and effect, Recognizing sequence, And
comparing and contrasting, and they will participate in
a Readers Theater. Students will practice different
types of expository writing, including writing a news
article, a cause-and-effect explanation, instructions,
and a writing that classifies specific subject matter.

The Big Question SAY: The Big Question for this unit is
"How does the sea affect our lives?" Invite students to
give a few Initial responses to the question. Discuss
their responses. SAY: Different people will answer the
big question in different ways. There are no right or
wrong answers. To deepen discussion, ask the
following questions: • In what ways do oceans enrich
the lives of people? • What are some dangers or
problems related to the sea? What responsibility do
human beings have for taking care of the world's
oceans?
