1. Thermal Insulation and Heat Retaining Properties via IR Absorption and Temperature
Measurement
Procedure Description:
A heat source is positioned above a workbench and allowed to heat up the bench. After
a specified time, the hottest point on the bench is found with an infrared thermometer and
marked. A square piece of Styrofoam is place on the work bench so that the hottest point on
the bench is directly under the center of the Styrofoam. A doughnut-shaped piece of Styrofoam
is placed on top and center of the square piece of Styrofoam. A fabric specimen is placed on
top and center of the doughnut-shaped Styrofoam, face side down, so that only the outer half
inch of fabric makes contact with the Styrofoam. A thermocouple is placed directly underneath
the center of the fabric specimen in order to measure and record the temperature of the surface
of the fabric. The heat source is adjusted so that it is 12 inches away from the surface of the
specimen. The heat source is turned on and allowed to heat the specimen for four minutes,
then turned off and the specimen is allowed to cool for four minutes. The thermocouple reads
and records the temperature under the specimen every 15 seconds for eight minutes. An
infrared thermometer is used to read the temperature of the surface of the center of the
specimen every 15 seconds for eight minutes.
Parameters:
Number of specimens: 3
Size of specimens: 10” diameter circles
Heat source: 250 watt infrared light
Time for heat source to heat work bench before test: 10 minutes
Distance of heat source from fabric sample: 12”
Temperature read and record intervals: Every 15 seconds
Length of time in which specimen is exposed to heat source: 4 minutes
Length of time in which the specimen is not exposed to heat source: 4 minutes
Length of test: 8 minutes

TEST SUMMARY
TEST METHOD
1. Introduction
1.1 The aim of this standard is the determination of the thermal insulation of fabrics (except knitted fabrics), the structure of
which does not alter during the test.
1.2 This procedure can be used also with non-woven materials, that must be not rigid, solid and characterised by an uniform
thickness that is smaller than the other dimensions.
2. Basic Concept
2.1 A metal cage of pre-determined size is covered with the test fabric. Within the cage a costant-power source amounting to
116,3 ± 0,6 W (100 ± 0,5 kcal/h) per square meter of the test fabric is activated. Consequently, a temperature increase with
respect to the external temperature occurs within the test volume. This increase tends to a limit value , called T r (temperatura
di regrime - required temperature).
At Tr a balance is reached, and thus there is a constant heat transmission through the fabric, which is equal to the thermal
power provided.
2.2 The difference between the Tr and the room temperature (in Celsius) is the measure for the thermal insulation of the fabric,
measured in UCT (unità di coibenza tessile - unit of textile insulation). Thus, thermal insulation is measured in UCT.

SUMMARY OF PROCEDURE
Specimens were cut into circles and weighed to the nearest 0.01 gram. They were submerged in water
then blotted so that they retained about 100% of their original dry weight in water. They were placed on the
balance and weighed at 5 minutes to determine the percent evaporation at 5 mintutes. The total time to dry
was also determined.

properties of pure, perfectly smooth materials (i.e., reflectivity, absorptivity, transmissivity and, for emission, emissivity),

Protocol:
It seems that transmittance, reflectance and absorptance on a given range of wavelength,
are a function of the material, but also the incident radiation, thus in the emission source. For the
various calculations of transmittance, reflectance and absorptance, we used several spectrums
representing the incident source on the material, so marking the level-headedness
Results:
The tables below recapitulate the results of the measures made on the various samples, on
the range of wavelength [0.2µm to 2.5µm] for the outside face (orientation towards the sun)
and on the range of wavelength [2.5µm to 19µm] for the inside face (orientation towards
the skin).

Observations:
In the range [0.2 to 0.7 µm] the visible range, there is no difference between the 3 samples. It is the
color (the type of used colouring agent) that plays: here 3 products are of black color.
Curves represent the intrinsic values of radiation of products. The 3 products have the same
signature, they are all with a polyester base.
We observe that the curves of R2 and R3 are stacked in the reflectance range [0.2 - 2.5 µm]. The face
place of R2 is identical to the composition of R3. Also in the table, R2 have a total reflectance of
21.81 % for 22.02 % for R3.
We observe that the curves of R2 and R1 are stacked in the reflectance range [2.5 à 19 µm]. The back
face of R2 is identical to the composition of R1. Also in the table, R2 have a total reflectance of
10.20% for 10.21% for R1.

APPENDIX A
I) Spectrums used for the level-headedness
It seems that transmittance, reflectance and absorptance on a given range of wavelength,
are a function of the material, but also the incident radiation, thus in the emissing source.
For the different calculations of transmittance, reflectance and absorptance, we can use
several spectrums representing the incident source on the fabric:
- The real solar spectrum, namely the incidental solar spectrum on the ground considering
the atmospheric absorption [W m-1 m-2] (solar radiation is attenuated significantly as it penetrates
through the atmosphere), shown in Figure 1.
- The spectrum of the Sun's solar irradiation, or spectral solar flux falling onto Earth, which to
behave very nearly like a blackbody at a temperature of about 5800 K with its maximum emissive
power for a wavelength equal to 0.5 m (Figure 2).
