Universal Design for Learning (UDL): I used color-coding to help differentiate the “living things” sections and
the “non-living things” section. For living things, I used red and I used blue for non- living things. This way
students do not get overwhelmed and confused about what goes with that. This tool is available to anyone
who uses the program.
Lesson idea implementation: The teacher will create a presentation using Popplet about living vs non-living
things. The project will be introduced in the beginning of the introduction to the “Life” chapter. The
presentation length will vary based on how in-depth and the grade level it is used for. Student learning will be
assessed by some sort of classwork/homework following the lesson to see what they do and do not
understand.
To help high the student’s knowledge and understanding on the topic, the teacher could have them create
their own Popplet. In order to do this, the teacher must check with parents and administrators to make sure
the website is approved because it asks for emails and requires a profile to be made. A project could be made
multiple ways with this topic. For this lesson, students will create a presentation by picking one living thing
and one non-living thing to compare. This will be a presentation style project and will be graded with a rubric.
Reflective Practice: I think the project after the lesson will help the students understand the difference
between living and non-living things because they have to apply the information they learned and put it into a
project. As an introductory activity to the lesson, the teacher could play a game before the Popplet to see
what the students already know, or afterwards to see what they have learned and what needs to be touched
on. The teacher could also do this both ways.
