As smartphones and tablets pervade the enterprise, companies must ensure adequate in-
building capacity and coverage. A key consideration is ensuring all current and future
services may be supported without requiring major upgrades of the in-building DAS
network. The expert panel will examine the challenges of delivering mobile services within
enterprise facilities and outline the key considerations that must be met to optimize service
today and in the future. less Trends Driving Demand for Distributed Antenna Systems
(In-building Wireless)
What is a DAS?
•  A distributed antenna system, or
DAS, is a network of spatially
separated antenna nodes connected
to a common transport medium
typically coax or fiber-optic cable that
provides wireless service within an
area, building or structure.

•  The DAS can be driven by a direct

connection to a carriers radio base
station or an “off-air” repeater/signal
booster.

•  Why DAS? To extend coverage and

capacity to the inside of buildings or
enterprise venues. Connecting to
external networks for seamless
customer experience.

Inbuilding DAS Market Then
(2000)
•  Only 38% of the US population used wireless primarily limited to voice;
virtually no “wireless-only” households

•  Very little data traffic carried on wireless networks

•  In-building expectations were low among commercial customers; outdoor

coverage was still patchy

•  Coverage was a “carrier problem” so customers looked to their primary

carrier for solutions

•  Fiber DAS technology was new for the wireless industry; single-carrier focus
which was generally purchased by the carriers a more expensive process
Inbuilding DAS Market Now
(2011)
•  Wireless services driven by consumer demand for •  Businesses are budgeting for DAS
data, multimedia and voice from multiple carrier
offerings
•  4G is becoming a necessity due to poor
in-building service
•  Businesses running entire operations on
smartphones, tablets and aircards making DAS a
necessity for businesses and their customers •  New Building Codes being adopted to
require public safety coverage

•  International Data Corporation (IDC)

expects smartphone makers to ship
450 million units in 2011 (50% increase
over 2010)

•  Carrier capacity growing as 60% of voice calls

and 70% of data usage is indoors
Carrier Network Demand
Enterprise DAS Verticals
•  Offices/Corporate Campus •  Casinos

•  Retail/Shopping Malls •  Convention Centers

•  Healthcare/Hospitals •  Sports Venues/Stadiums

•  Airports/Train Stations •  University Campuses

•  Manufacturing/Industrial •  Government Municipalities

•  Hotels & Meeting Rooms

Drivers, Healthcare
•  78% of Americans expressed interest in mobile health
(Harris Interactive & CTIA)

•  By 2012, mobile health monitoring will be one of the 10

most popular mobile applications (Gartner Research)

•  Clinicians are early adopters of wireless devices like

smartphones and tablets

•  Physicians, staff, patients and visitors expect and rely

on cellular/PCS for communications (mobile workforce)

•  Mobile access to patients’ electronic medical records

(EMR)

•  Mobile monitoring of patient vitals, lab results, imaging

exams, etc.
Drivers, Hospitality
•  Unlike a university or hospital, hotel or
casino customers can stay/go elsewhere
if they experience poor cellular coverage
•  Travelers reliant on smart phones and
data cards
•  Customer satisfaction and retention is
driving DAS in the hospitality sector
•  A meeting planner that books a
conference at a hotel with poor cellular
coverage will only make that mistake
once
•  Similar to higher-education, hotel Wi-Fi
deployment is likely a leading indicator
for future DAS deployments
Drivers, Higher Ed
•  Student and faculty multi-carrier cell
phone coverage is a matter of
convenience and safety
•  Demand for coverage in stadiums
•  Parents want instant access to their kids
•  Students use wireless as primary mode
of voice and data communications
•  Colleges/universities are
decommissioning land lines in dorms
and buildings
•  26% of wireless users are wireless-only
(no landlines)
Drivers, Public Venues
•  Stadiums, conference centers, malls and
public transportation hubs have high
concentrations of users accessing the
wireless network simultaneously
•  Large concentrations of people can
overload networks causing poor service,
dropped calls
•  Density of users affects venue design for
wireless coverage and capacity along with
surrounding area call handoffs
•  Carriers eager to fund DAS in these
venues to offload traffic from macro
network
Ownership Models
Carrier Neutral-Host Venue Owner

•  100% funded and •  100% funded and •  Funded by venue

operated by carrier operated by owner
independent 3rd Parties
•  Typically single carrier that are DAS •  Deployed and operated
Aggregators by DAS integrator/
•  Owner leases space contractor
•  Carriers may form
back to multiple carriers
consortium
•  Carriers/3rd parties
•  Neutral-host design may partially fund
•  Neutral-host approach
supporting multiple
being pursued by some
carriers
carriers •  Network designs can be
built for single or multi-
carrier
