1. Introduction
This method statement is developed to adopt a suitable, safe and effective method for
general excavation and backfilling of PLTMG 20 MW Langgur-Maluku Project as per
specification and approved drawings.

2. Scope and Purpose

This procedure deals with earth work in excavaion and backfilling. It is subject to
revision depending upon requirements and site condition at the field in consent with
Engineers In-charge. The purpose of this procedure is to:
a. Provide approved, and controlled methodelogy for effective execution of earth
works activities.
b. Bring uniformity in the job to supervision.
c. Minimize the error and non conformance.

The necessary safety precautions will be taken in selection of excavation or backfilling

machinery, task briefing to workers and execution of work. The work indended to
execute under thi method statement will be carried out according to safety provisions.

3. Procedure (Excavation)
a. Clearence and cleaning of field area is importane before excavation. Put marking
and coordinate in area, loose or soft bed ground encoutered in excavation in
required depth shall be excavated as per supervisor or engineer in-charge
instruction.
b. The following drawing are most relevan to the excavation phase.
c. Excavation should be possible in dry condition. It shall be observed that rain may
change this situation and standing water may develop the excavation.
d. Prior to an excavation and trenching operation, the location of all excisting
underground instalation shall be verified, if possible. Existing utility lines whose
approximate locations are known prior to excavating or trenching and which are to
be retained, shall be protected from damage.
e. Where soft or unstable sil is encounteres at the bottom of a cut the excavaion shall
be continue and suitable soil or import material may be used as directed by
engineer in charge.
f. Excavated material should be approves for backfill may be stockpiled at a
designated location near the construction site. All disapproved materials shall be
separated and not use for bakfilling.
g. General requirements for the power plant facility not specially shown on the plans
as presented bellow:
 Temporary excavated slopes less than 1 M high, 2 : 1 (V:H) depending on
observed conditions.

 Temporary excavated slopes more than 1 M high, 1 : 1 (V:H) depending on

observed conditions.
h. Put coordinate at the bottom of excavation, then record the coordinate.

4. Procedur (Backfilling)
a. Filling shall generally be divided into two main programmes, the are site
preparation mass replecement filling and final compacted fill for construction of
foundations.
b. Prior to filling, supervisor shall observed the area te be filled, the will follow the
general criteria for approval of the filling area.
c. The fill material are to be shall consist of sandy gravel with a sand, free form
organic matter. Suitability of imported structural fill shall be verified with an
analysis and description from the supplier. If onsite or native soil is used as fill, it
shall be verified as suitable in the design basic or geotechnical report. Any
material used for non-structural fill shall be approved by engineer in charge.
d. The fill material shall be compacted by vibro compactor in uniform layers no
exceeding 300 mm. If necessary the compaction grade has to be confirmed by the
contractor with a suitable testing method. The rates for earth filling shall include
filling in layers not exceeding 300 mm depth and well consolidated. All
measurements of fill are to be taken net after consolidation.

5. Prcedure (Test)
Sand Cone Test
This procedure covers the requirement and procedure for sand cone test for the
proposed PLTMG 20 MW Langgur-Maluku Project. The test procedure following:
 Place the calibration mold in pan
 Set the sand cone device in place on the flange of the calibration mold and
close the valve
 Place the preweighed 5000 g sample of density sand in the hooper
 Open the valve and keep it open until the sand has stopped flowing and
then close
 Reweight the sand remaining in the hopper
 The difference between the original (5000 g) and final weight will be the
“weight of sand to fill calibration mold and cone.”
 The weight of sand to fill the lower cone will be determined in a similar
manner
 Place the sand cone device on flat surface and allow the sand (50000 g) to
run into the cone. The deffernce between the original and final weight of
sand in the hooper shall be recorded as the “weight of sand to fill cone.”
 Calculate the unit weight of sand from the above determinations.

 If base plate is to be used in the taking of density test, the plate shall be
placed between the flat surface and the cone. Test as above to determine
the weight of sand to fill the cone and base plate.
