Types of Stress
 Two basic stress : Normal stress, Shear stress.
 Normal Stress: Intensity of force perpendicular to or normal to the section
is called normal stress.
• Normal stress that cause tension pull on the surface is called Tension,
and that are pushing against it called compressive stress

Types of Stress
 Shearing stress is a force that causes layers or parts to slide upon each
other in opposite directions.

Hooke’s Law
Robert Hooke experimentally observed that “ within the elastic limit, stress is
directly proportional to strain”

Where, E is proportionality constant, called elastic modulus or modulus of


elasticity, or Young’s Modulus
Hooke’s law is applicable only to the proportional limit of material
