MADERAS DE ALBERTO BELTRAN

Olinalá is a town of craftsmen in a predominantly lndian
region of the Southern Sierra Madre, State of Guerrero.
Mexico, Tlapanecs, Mixtecs, and Mexicans coixa converge
at ·napa, a town dating from pre-Cortesian and colonial
times, and famous for its fairs.
Tlapa and the other towns located in ''the gla,dc" of the
Tlapaneco River have well-irrigated lands in the meadown
region, where rice, sugar cane, hananas and other fruits are
grown. Outside the meadow, fallow ground is cultivated with
tbe aid of ploughs and yokes of oxen, as well as tlacolol, that
i5:, hillside ground cleared of stubblc.
In contrast to the neigbboring agricultural towns, the
prc_perous com.munity of Olinala supports itself mainly
thrcugh the craft of lacquer-work. In tbe town there are
full-time craftsmen as well as those who combine work in
the fields with that related to the lacquer industry.
At the present time the craftsmen of Olinalá have ab
andoned some of the techniques formerly used in the prepar
ation of colors, preferring industrial paints, which are c-heap
and time-saving. but in its fundamental aspects the tech
nique of preparing the lacquer has been preserved without
any alteratíon. That techni, que includes the use of earths
found in the region and of chía oíl. For the process of pol
ishing the lacquer, ancient polishers of fine stones are util
ized, handed down from generation to generation in the
familias of the craftsmen; at the present time they do not
kncw how to make these polishers. For the decoration of the
la,cquer-work, brushes of wild-cat or domestic-cat fur are
used: these are made in the loca.lity.
The economy of Olinalá is expanding. Besides the tra-d
itional sale of these articles at fairs, sorne of them held at
widely-distant towns, a demand exists on the part of the
com.mercial establishments of Mexico City, which sell and
C'Xport. them as "Mexican Curios." The danger exists that
this will stimulate the craftsmen to produce cbeap work,
utilizing new industrial products and sacrificing quality and
good taste.
As a remedy it is soggested that the artistic pride of the
crafb:men should be developed, since it already exists in
the bud; that some organizations akin to guilds should be
cstablished in order to watch over the quality of the produc
tion, as well as a sales organiza, tion that wiH free the crafts
men from the exploita.tion of the large com.mercial estab
li hments, permitting him to receh1e a higher percentage
from the sales price of bis product .

tlalcuztli "tierra amarilla o medio bermeja" (Molina). Tlacocauhti
hombres.
Como " sisa" han venido usando tradicionalmente aceite de chía;
