Background: What: An instruction will be provided for a variety of reasons across
content areas using graphic organizers.
Why: There is a performance gap for students when writing in content
areas such as math, social studies, science, and art.
When: The instruction will occur November 5, 2018 through
November 9, 2018.
Who: Third grade students, 24 girls and 19 boys
Where: Cobb County Elementary School
How: Students will participate in whole group instruction, partner
activities and individual class work assignments involving both paper
pencil and technology components for instruction.
1. Performance Assessment
Purpose Statement:
The purpose of this project is to improve the skill level of students and also their confidence
levels in writing across content areas using graphic organizers.
2. Instructional Goals
1. Students will recognize relevant information during instruction and discussion.
2. Students will summarize and compare meanings using a graphic organizer.
3. Students will separate the content into highly organized and easy to understand parts.
4. Students will make judgements on importance of content.
5. Students will organize content into a new context using graphic organizers.
6. Bloom’s Taxonomy Level 6: Students will create a study guide through interpretation of
graphic organizers.
3. Targeted Audience Profiles
Numbers of Learners 43
Attitude of Learners 81% (35 out of 43) of the students are positive and eager to
learn. They are excited about sharing their writing pieces.
12% (5 out of 43) of the students are not interested in
writing and stated that they would rather draw or type on
the computer. 7% (3 out of 43) of the students were
indifferent and shrugged their shoulders when asked about
how they felt about the upcoming learning and lesson.
The students can construct a sentence, they understand
Skills of Learners that Influence basic sentence structure. They are less familiar with the
the Success of the Instruction vocabulary that may be unique to specific content areas but
necessary to accurately express understanding.
