Introduction

Volvo B-Series History

Champion introduced its 700 Series of motor graders in 1975. The
Series III models were released in 1988, the Series IV in 1994, and
the Series V in 1997. Champion also released a Series IV Engine
Update in 1996. The Series V line did not actually introduce any
new machines for Champion, but four variable-horsepower
versions of existing models were released. This made VHP
available on all models except the G710B. The Series V machines
had increased horsepower and weight over the Series IV units, in
addition to increased focus on the operator station. The Series VI
machines made VHP available for all models, standardized their
movable blade control system, improved their AWD and
eliminated all straight frame models.

In 1999 Volvo purchased Champion. Both names appeared on the

motor graders until 2002 when the Champion name was eliminated.

In 2002 Volvo introduced its new B-Series motor graders,

including seven models. The A-Series previously had nine models;
the 716A, 736A, and 750A models were dropped and a new
G746B model was added. Overall weight of all B-Series motor
graders has been increased, hydraulic systems have been updated,
the control monitor system has been added, and B-Series machines
have been upgraded to meet EPA Tier II regulations.

Production Potential

To compare the “real world” performance of the Volvo G726B Productivity Study Results
against the Caterpillar 140H and 163H graders, a ditch building
productivity study was developed. The study involved using Productivity Plot Cross
each machine to perform a predetermined and consistent Section Profile
process to build a 300-foot-long by 50-foot-wide road bed with
a ditch on both sides. Road bed

The test was performed with the AWD off on the G726B and
163H to simulate their non-AWD counterparts, the G720B and
Ditch
160H. The volume of dirt removed from the ditch, the amount
of fuel burned, and the operation time required was carefully Initial Surface
measured for each run. Final Surface

To ensure a fair comparison between the machines, each test

plot was completely excavated and refilled to a consistent
compaction prior to the study, and each machine was tested
three times. Each of the machines was configured identically,
including a 14-foot moldboard, no ripper, and Bridgestone VKT
17.5R25 tires inflated to 45 psi. Each of the machines was also
fitted with an auxiliary 10 gallon fuel tank in order to measure
fuel consumption and run on “dyno” grade fuel to ensure
optimum engine performance.

Production Potential

Averages of the three runs for each machine are shown in the
graphs to follow. The advantages shown in percent are those that
can be claimed with at least 95% certainty, based on the
distribution of the test data taken, even though the average values
may show a higher advantage.
In a direct comparison of the 143H and the Volvo G726B,
production rates were similar. However, the 143H achieved a
faster completion time, better fuel efficiency, and much better fuel
economy. This is a notable achievement for a machine that is
lighter in weight and has lower horsepower than the Volvo
G726B. We will demonstrate why with supporting detail
highlighted later in this bulletin.

Power to the Ground Engine Response

Transferring smooth, usable power to the ground is the key to
good motor grader performance. Cat engines are carefully
matched with efficient powershift transmissions and supply more
usable power to the ground.

The Caterpillar H-Series machines have a constant 50% torque

rise in all gears and power settings. Volvo B-Series graders range
from 33% to 53.3% depending on machine size and power setting.

Variable Horsepower
Caterpillar pioneered variable horsepower on the 140G in the
early 1980s. Today, variable horsepower is available on all Cat
H-Series graders. Two power settings (VHP) are standard on the
AWD models and available as an option on all other models,
except the 24H. Three power settings (VHP Plus) are available as
an option on the 12H through 163H models. Variable horsepower
is standard on all of the Volvo models; however, they only provide
two power settings.
During snow removal and roading operations when additional
power is required to maintain speed, Caterpillar’s VHP Plus
option offers that additional power in 7th and 8th gear to get the
job done faster.

Right Gear for the Job

To deliver the maximum engine power to the ground, transmission
gear ranges must be properly positioned over the entire operating
range. Although both Caterpillar and Volvo units offer eight gears,
the Caterpillar transmission speed ranges were carefully selected
to match typical motor grader applications.

The Volvo B-Series transmission has only three working gear

splits in the earthmoving application range (0 to 6 mph), with first
gear at 2.8 mph. This speed may be fast for many finish-blading
operations. Studies indicate the majority of earthmoving
applications are performed between 0-6 mph. Cat H-Series
graders offer four gears within the typical earthmoving application
range, enabling the operator to choose the right gear for the job.

Production Potential

In earthmoving and road maintenance, 6.0 mph is considered the

upper limit of effective operation. Beyond this speed, quality of
work usually suffers due to limitations in machine stability and
operator response time. The Cat H-Series graders position
4th gear at 6.4 mph, allowing the operator to take advantage of
optimal engine horsepower while maintaining sufficient ground
speed. The Volvo B-Series positions their 4th gear at a much
higher and unstable 7.5 mph, forcing the operator to drop back to
3rd gear (5.3 mph), sacrificing ground speed, horsepower and
potentially sacrificing production. Caterpillar’s unique design
Cat 140H VHP Plus — earthmoving
allows the operator greater versatility and the freedom to
utilize more gears within the typical range of earthmoving
application speeds.

The Cat transmission’s fifth, sixth, and seventh gears are more
suited to snow removal than Volvo’s. Seventh gear on the Volvo
machine at 20.4 mph is considered by many operators to be too
fast for snow removal applications. Caterpillar’s seventh-gear
speed of 18.8 mph is considered a much better working speed.
Caterpillar’s gear splits within the snow removal application range
are smaller than those of Volvo — a definite advantage during
downshifting and traction limited conditions. The reason — the
motor grader keeps moving, so momentum is maintained.

Reverse Speeds
The Volvo B-Series graders have a limited number of reverse
gears to select from. The Volvo B-Series only has four reverse
gears. Offering more gears allows operators to choose the right
gear for the job. The production advantage is significant,
especially when the operator does not have the space to turn
around or when the length of the pass is short.

The maximum speed in reverse for H-Series machines is only

slightly higher than the Volvo B-Series units, but the difference
lies in the speed change between gears. Since the Volvo B-Series
has fewer gears in reverse, a greater speed change occurs when
shifting between gears. This makes the transition between gears
less smooth with Volvo B-Series machines. Caterpillar also has a
slower first gear in reverse than the Volvo B-Series, a benefit
when maneuvering in tight quarters.

Blade Positioning Extended Blade Positioning

The Cat H-Series extended blade positioning is very beneficial in
mid-range bank sloping, ditch cutting, and ditch cleaning. During
mid-range bank sloping, the machine can remain on the ground and
off the slope. In ditching applications, the blade can reach farther
out and down, which keeps the machine on a dry, level surface.
In these applications, the Volvo B-Series unit provides comparable
extended positioning. When cutting a 2:1 bank slope, both the Cat
and Volvo machines can dress the slope while remaining off the
slope surface. However, Cat H-Series motor graders can reach an
additional one foot up the slope, providing extended operating
range and increased versatility.
• Steep ditch cutting angles
• 1.5:1 and 2:1 backsloping with the front tire on the slope

Cat 143H — Blade Reach (maximum • Sharp blade cutting angles

distance from outer edge of tires)
• 90-degree side bank cutting

All of Volvo B-Series graders now have their seven-position

movable blade control system as standard equipment.

Caterpillar’s unique Drawbar, Circle, and Moldboard (DCM)

geometry allow the operator to maximize blade reach/positioning,
resulting in a higher production potential.

Backslope Operation
The relationship of the moldboard heel to the tandem tires is
critical when performing a backsloping operation. Caterpillar’s
extended blade positioning allows the operator to maintain this
critical relationship while cutting backslopes. This gives
Caterpillar a 5° advantage.

the moldboard and the bottom of the circle, allowing large blade
loads to roll freely. Insufficient clearance restricts material flow,
requiring more power to move the same load. It can also force the
operator to reduce the blade load, sacrificing production. Throat
clearance is larger on the Cat grader (left) than on the comparable
Volvo B-Series model (right).

Adjustable Side Shift Anchor Positions

Cat motor graders feature a three-position side shift anchor
adjustment that can extend moldboard reach to the right or left .
This allows an operator who predominately works with the
moldboard on the grader’s right side to set the anchor position to
improve ditching and backsloping capability.

The Caterpillar circle drive system maintains a constant high Circle Torque Advantage
torque throughout the range of circle travel and is protected by a
slip clutch to prevent damage that may be caused from hitting an
immovable object.

Testing was done to determine average circle torque on both the

143H and G726B. The results determined that the actual circle
torque for Volvo varied as a function of the circle position.
Volvo’s variation is much more pronounced due to their unique
twin-cylinder design. The Cat 143H maintained constant circle
torque throughout the entire rotation.

All Wheel Drive Performance All wheel drive (AWD) improves tractive performance in poor
underfoot conditions such as snow, mud, and sand. It also
provides excellent steering and sidedraft control in many
applications including ditching, drifting heavy blade loads,
finishing, or working on a side slope. The Cat 143H and 163H
redefine performance for all-wheel drive motor graders, clearly
outpacing the Volvo B-Series AWD models.

Since H-Series motor graders have dual displacement hydraulic

motors driving the front wheels, they are able to provide two
separate torque ranges when AWD is on. Gears one through four
operate at high torque, and gears five through seven run at low
torque. This allows the Cat machines to better match the torque
requirements to the application.

Snow Removal
The Cat AWD system uses dual-displacement hydraulic motors to
drive the front wheels. With dual-displacement motors, Cat
engineers are able to extend the AWD operating range through
seventh gear (18.8 mph) without compromising the high rimpull
at lower speeds. With the Cat 143H and 163H, operators can reap
the benefits of the AWD system in many applications, regardless
of the speed range.
Cat 163H snow removal

Ground-Speed Sensors
Cat H-Series machines use RADAR to determine true ground
speed by using ground-speed sensors that determine how fast the
machine is travelling with respect to the ground. A sensor is also
placed on the transmission output shaft, which precisely calculates
what the machine travel speed should be. The actual ground speed
is then automatically compared to the calculated speed to
determine how much slippage is occurring at the rear wheels. The
system either automatically or manually allows the operator to
adjust the power to the front wheels to efficiently compensate for
Cat ground-speed sensor
this loss in rimpull.

Volvo B-Series Constant Speed Control vs. Cat Torque Control

All Wheel Drive System
The Volvo B-Series unit uses hydraulic motors equipped with
speed sensors to drive their front wheels at a constant speed
relative to their rear wheels. Their all wheel drive control module
monitors the speed of the rear wheels and then sends commands
to the AWD pumps to maintain a front wheel speed at a certain
percentage of the rear wheel speed. In a tight radius turn however,
the front tires are required to run much faster than the rear tires
just to keep up with the machine. Since the front wheels are being
pushed at a faster speed than the AWD controller is trying to
maintain, they are supplied with no pressure and actually cause
some drag. This renders the Volvo B-Series AWD control system
less effective in helping to pull the front of the machine through a
turn in slippery or loose ground conditions.

Caterpillar’s Torque Control System maintains constant torque to

the ground regardless of front wheel speed. This feature allows
the front wheels to speed up as needed and maintain the front
wheel traction force necessary to pull the front of the machine
through a tighter turn than the Volvo B-Series machine.

The Volvo B-Series system is designed to simply control the ratio of

front wheel speed relative to rear wheel speed with a manual dial.
Since they have no ground speed sensor providing true ground
speed, they cannot automatically adjust the level of aggression based
on the amount of rear tire slip like the Caterpillar system does in
automatic mode. Maintaining a high aggression when it is not
necessary for traction results in unnecessary loss of power and
increased fuel consumption due to the parasitics of the AWD system.

For actual data, see Appendices B and C, pages 62 and 63.

February 2004 TEJB7031 Cat H-Series vs. Volvo B-Series Motor Graders 25
Production Potential

Effective AWD Range

The Cat AWD system utilizes dual-displacement hydraulic motors
to drive the front wheels. Dual-displacement motors enable the
AWD operating range to extend through seventh gear (18.8 mph)
without compromising the high rimpull at lower speeds. With the
Cat 143H and 163H, operators can reap the benefits of the AWD
system in many applications, regardless of the speed range.

Caterpillar took into account parasitic losses associated with the

AWD hydraulic pumps and designed engine software to
automatically increase engine horsepower to offset this loss. This
feature is unique to the Cat AWD models, giving Cat a potential
production advantage.

Finish Grading
A basic function of a motor grader is the ability to travel at slow
speeds when the application calls for precision grading.

Volvo B-Series graders offer a feature available only in their AWD

models called “creep mode.” This allows the grader to travel at the
slow speeds required for finish grading by disengaging the tandems
and directing power to the front wheels only. Pulling the machine
by powering only the front wheels is an inefficient use of
horsepower, which requires all traction to come from only two
wheels, increasing the likelihood for wheel slip.

Scuffing is another undesirable characteristic during finish grading

applications. But, regardless of how the machine is being powered,
a tandem axle machine will cause scuffing during a tight radius turn
in applications such as cul-de-sac work. The rear wheels scuff
because the pivot point for each tandem is between its wheels. As
the tandem moves through a tight radius turn, side loading occurs
on the front wheel opposite from the rear wheel, causing a slight
slip to the side or scuffing.

Every Cat grader comes equipped with the proper gear splits to
match any application. Finish grading is a basic function which is
not limited to only a few select models. Directing power to the
ground through the rear tandems, coupled with skillful application
of the inching pedal, distributes horsepower efficiently with less
chance of disturbing the finished surface.

26 TEJB7031 Cat H-Series vs. Volvo B-Series Motor Graders February 2004
Production Potential

Volvo B-Series Creep Mode

Volvo’s B-Series creep mode appears to be an open loop control
system, meaning that it commands a predetermined current to the
two AWD pumps as a function of engine speed, to set front wheel
speed. Since the B-Series AWD system does not have any
calibration routines to account for variances in control current on
pump displacement, solenoid or pump variances can cause one
wheel to do most of the pulling.

The differing front wheel speeds that result from sharp turns can
also cause a problem with this open loop system. The inner wheel
of the turn will take all of the load, pulling the machine around the
corner, while the outside wheel is pulled along. If the current
displacement characteristic is not identical from the left to right
drive solenoids, this problem can be magnified in one direction, due
to the wheel motor becoming a pump. This results in the left and
right wheels fighting against each other to get through the turn.

For actual data, see Appendix D, page 64.

Owning and Operating Cost

Fuel Economy The combined engine and powertrain efficiency of the Cat 143H
provide better overall fuel economy than the Volvo G726B. In
order for the Volvo to maintain equivalent fuel economy to the
Cat 143H it must be lugged down below 1600 rpm, at which
point the available rimpull force drops below the 143H.
For actual data, see Appendix E, page 65.

Serviceability Routine Checks

Caterpillar designed their new EPA Tier II Emissions motor graders
with serviceability in mind. All daily service points are concentrated
on the left side of the machine for operator convenience. A coolant
level sight gauge and hydraulic oil sight are visible at a glance from
the left of the machine without opening any compartments. The
ground level fuel fill, battery disconnect, jumpstart receptacle, and
air tank sediment drains are located inside the rear left engine
compartment door, while the engine oil dipstick, transmission oil
dipstick, and fuel water separator are accessible inside the forward
left engine compartment door, which can be opened or closed easily
with one hand and about 15 pounds of force.

The Volvo motor grader has the fuel fill located at the top front of
the engine enclosure, requiring the operator to climb on the left
tandem and battery box each time the machine is fueled. Volvo’s
engine oil dipstick, transmission oil dipstick, and battery
disconnect are located inside the left gull-wing-style engine door,
which opens easily but requires 40 pounds and two free hands to
close. The service brakes and clutch master cylinders have
separate reservoirs that require routing checks and are located
under the cab.

Electrical
Caterpillar has two fuse panels in the cab that are easily visible
and have a diagram of which circuit each fuse is for on the back
of the cover.

Volvo has a single fuse panel located inside of the shift console to
the right of the operator. A small access panel provides a method
of accessing the fuses; however, it does not provide good
visibility of the fuses. The backside of that panel cover contains a
diagram showing the size of fuses that go into each socket, but
does not indicate their purpose. An operator would have to refer
to the service manual to determine where a fuse for a particular
circuit is located.

Durability

Cat motor graders are built to last. With ease of adjustment and
rebuildability designed into our machines, the customer will realize
a higher availability and a reduction in repair costs throughout the
entire life of the grader.

While many factors influence the life of a diesel engine, we will Engine
examine two factors in detail.
• Rated speed — In general, a lower speed engine has a longer
life because of reduced wear and heat loads. Caterpillar has a
10% advantage at 2000 rpm rated speed.
• Displacement — A large displacement engine has lower
internal stresses than a small displacement engine.

Brake Mean Effective Pressure (BMEP) is the average force in the

engine cylinder used to develop power. A high BMEP increases
pressure and stress on the internal engine components. If
components are not designed to handle higher pressures and
increased stress loads, their expected life will diminish as a result.

As shown in the table below, Volvo is experiencing

22%-38% higher BMEP than Caterpillar, in equivalent operating
ranges. Generally higher BMEP has a negative effect on engine
life, unless the engine is designed to handle the loads.

Durability

Field experience also shows Cat G-Series transmissions had about Transmission
two times more life before overhaul than the Volvo B-Series
transmissions. The original Cat H-Series transmissions were
designed to meet or exceed the durability established by the
G-Series. The now proven Cat H-Series transmission has carried
into the new H-Series machine to continue this durability
advantage over the Volvo 8400 transmission.

Heavier components and the largest clutch plate surface area in

the industry allow Cat transmissions to be the most durable,
smoothest shifting transmissions in the business. The Cat
transmission features a larger-diameter input shaft, bigger and
heavier gears and hubs, and clutch packs with more friction
material. The more robust design of the H-Series transmission can
also improve transmission performance. For example, more
friction material in Caterpillar’s clutch pack allows for better heat Caterpillar Volvo
dissipation, which allows the clutches to slip more slowly for
smooth gear shifts. Because of the smaller-diameter clutch packs
in the Volvo B-Series transmission, the clutches must drop and
engage quickly in order to avoid heat buildup that may damage
components. This causes the more abrupt shifts discussed on
page 46.

Service Brakes The legendary brakes of the G-Series and original H-Series live
on in the new H-Series. These air-actuated, oil-bathed, multi-disc
brakes have extended life. The Volvo B-Series has a multi-disc,
oil-bathed design similar to Caterpillar’s brakes. Cat service
brakes have significantly more friction material than Volvo
B-Series machines across all models, giving the H-Series graders
a stronger, longer-lasting brake system, with longer intervals
between servicing.

and is self-adjusting, eliminating the need for routine adjustment
throughout the life of the machine. Cat’s parking brake also has
significantly more friction area than the Volvo B-Series brake.

The Volvo B-Series parking brake is a dry, unsealed, caliper disc

located on the transmission output shaft. It is mechanically
actuated by a cable and hand lever on the left side of the cab. It is
not self-adjusting, therefore Volvo recommends adjustment every Caterpillar Volvo
1000 hours. Further, the Volvo design does not have an interlock
to prevent placing the transmission in gear with the parking brake
engaged, so it is possible to “drive through” the brakes and cause
damage.

Front Axle Understanding that the design and applications of motor graders
place greater loads on the outer wheel bearing, Caterpillar
designed a front axle that is superior in many ways. Caterpillar
uses a “live” spindle design that places the larger of the two
bearings outboard, where most of the load is carried. The
B-Series uses a “dead” spindle design, placing the smaller bearing
in the location of the greatest stress. The Cat live spindle design
allows the largest wheel bearing to carry most of the load,
extending component life.

The bearings on the Cat front axle are sealed with DuoCone®
seals, and they are encased in lightweight oil for maximum
lubrication and bearing life. Volvo B-Series seals its bearings with
lip seals and lubricates them with grease, making them susceptible
to contamination in wet or muddy conditions. Only routine visual
inspections are necessary with the H-Series front axles, while Volvo
B-Series machines require weekly inspections and periodic greasing
in addition to bearing repacking every 500 hours.

Front Frame Front Frame

The Caterpillar flanged box section utilizes recessed side plates to
keep vulnerable welds away from high stresses at outer edges of the
top and bottom plate.

The Caterpillar front frame features one-piece top and bottom

plates from the articulation joint to the front bolster. The absence
of welds along these critical surfaces virtually eliminates potential
for cracks.

Caterpillar has designed its final drive system to take the majority Final Drive
of the reduction, reducing the stress loads to the pinion/bevel gear
and differential. The Volvo uses tandem drive reduction, placing
higher loads on these areas. In addition, Volvo’s reduction in the
tandems will potentially unbalance the front and rear tandem tires
under hard pulls or braking.

Drawbar, Circle, and Caterpillar’s moldboard slide rails offer adjustability using shims to
Moldboard Serviceability take up the play in the rails, which causes moldboard chatter. As the
lower rail wear strips on the Cat machine wear, the shims can be
adjusted to eliminate the play that develops. Volvo does not allow
the use of shims to adjust the lower moldboard slide rails. In fact,
Volvo suggests replacing them instead. The upper rails are able to
be adjusted, but Volvo does not recommend it. The Volvo wear
strips must be replaced when play becomes too excessive for fine
blade control.

Caterpillar utilizes a six-shoe design to distribute the circle load

more evenly, as compared to the Volvo three-shoe system. In
addition, Caterpillar’s shoe design is comprised of a single shoe and
wear strip, easing serviceability. Volvo’s shoe design is made up of
two separate castings and two separate wear strips that must be
Volvo G726B Circle Shoe Design assembled in place on the bottom of the circle, complicating
assembly upon replacement.
Shim Pack Clamp Plate
Guide Plate
In a drawbar service time study performed between the Cat 140H
and the Volvo G726B, it took twice as long to replace and adjust
the circle shoe wear strips on the Volvo, even though the Caterpillar
machine has twice as many shoes. There are three primary
differences that give Caterpillar this advantage. Caterpillar’s single
piece circle shoe and wear strip are less cumbersome to work with,
because it can be put in place and bolted up rather than assembling
it one piece at a time while holding each part in place. Caterpillar’s
shoe retaining bolts are threaded directly into the drawbar making
service from under the circle easier, as opposed to the Volvo shoe
Through Bolts Double Nuts
bolts which are drilled through and have a double nut on one end,
requiring the use of one hand to keep the bolt head on the top of the
drawbar plate from spinning, while the other hand removes the nuts
from underneath the circle. Adjustments to the circle shoes also
require a check and adjust of the circle drive gear(s). Caterpillar’s
circle drive system only has one gear engagement to check, while
the Volvo dual cylinder circle drive system consists of three gears
engaged to the circle that must be checked and adjusted to close
tolerances for the system to work properly.

The drawbar, circle, and moldboard comprise the main working

tool of the motor grader. Due to their constant use, they must be
durable and able to withstand wear and impact.

Caterpillar also provides strong, balanced support over the circle

with six circle support shoes. Volvo B-Series offer three support
shoes, with only one located at the front, where most of the load
is located.

Durability

The Y-design drawbar of the H-Series transfers loads more

effectively than the T-design drawbar of the Volvo B-Series.
The Cat H-Series blade lift and centershift hydraulic cylinders use a
bronze-alloy covered steel insert between the cylinder socket and the
ball studs. Wear occurs on the insert, which can easily be replaced
after all adjustment shims have been removed. The B-Series
machines do not use this type of insert, so repairs require the major
expense of cutting off worn sockets and ball studs and welding on
new pieces.

All Cat H-Series motor graders feature an exclusive rolled-ring Caterpillar 140H drawbar
steel forging built for toughness. It has raised wear surfaces to
prevent wear to circle teeth. Volvo B-Series does not offer this
raised wear surface, which decreases the durability of the circle
teeth. The B-Series models use a fabricated assembly with teeth
flame-cut into the flat top plate. Cat also induction hardens 240
degrees of its circle, the most in the industry. This provides added
durability to the teeth.

Caterpillar offers a circle drive slip clutch as standard equipment on

its H-Series motor graders. It protects the drawbar, circle, and
moldboard from horizontal shocks when an object is hit near the toe
or heel of the blade. This system is most useful in applications Volvo B-Series drawbar
where rocks or hidden objects are frequently encountered. A circle
drive slip clutch is not offered on the Volvo B-Series machines. They
do offer an overload cushion valve as standard on all models, but
this is a relief valve that only protects the centershift cylinder, not
the circle drive system and components.

Articulation Area Articulation Joint

Caterpillar’s articulation joint is built for maximum life. When wear
develops in the articulation joint, the capability to make smooth,
precise grading cuts is diminished.

The Cat H-Series motor graders use a large-diameter, tapered roller

bearing at the heavily loaded lower pivot. The Volvo B-Series
machines use a simple pin and spherical bearing that can wear
quickly. Joints on Cat graders are sealed against contamination. The
B-Series joints are unsealed, allowing dirt to penetrate and
accelerate wear. In this critical area, Caterpillar also uses large
castings designed to carry loads more effectively in the transition
Caterpillar articulation joint area. This allows critical welds to be moved to areas of lower
stress. The Volvo B-Series joints are welded fabrications made from
a steel plate.

Volvo articulation joint

Articulation Cylinder Pins

The articulation cylinder pins on H-Series motor graders adds to the
overall durability of the articulation area. A tapered design of both
the cylinder pin and bore locks the pin in place and prevents wear
in the cylinder mounting supports. Volvo uses a simple straight pin
Caterpillar Volvo that is far more susceptible to wear and looseness.

Hydraulic System Cat H-Series motor graders are equipped with Cat XT-3™ high
pressure hose and O-ring face seals for dry, secure connections.
This tough hose allows Cat machines to run high hydraulic
pressures without significant hose swell, which can affect hydraulic
response and functionality. A rigid, tough hose allows quicker, more
reliable implement response because it will not expand when being
filled with hydraulic fluid. A weaker hose requires more time to fill
because of the swell that occurs as it is filled.

Volvo uses commercially available hydraulic hose on its B-Series

machines. Caterpillar makes its own hydraulic hose because of the
strict quality and durability standards required on our machines.
Caterpillar XT-3 hose Using a more durable hydraulic hose leads to less hydraulic line
failures, reducing machine downtime.

The hydraulic lines on H-Series motor graders are routed in a very

clean, organized manner. The hoses are clamped down in areas
where “bunching” can occur. Hose paths are not crossed, which
makes it easier for mechanics to replace worn or broken hose. By
comparison, The Volvo B-Series hydraulic hose routings allow lines
to extend up into areas where implements can contact them.

Operator Confidence

Operator confidence is a critical element that allows for full Visibility

utilization of a machine’s production potential. The Cat
H-Series graders enhance the operator’s confidence through superior
visibility, machine control, and hydraulic implement control.
Good visibility is critical to the operator’s confidence level. With
a clear view of the work area, an operator can perform high-
quality work safely and at a faster pace. In addition to increased
visibility, Cat motor graders feature laminated glass in the front
windows to protect the operator and machine from debris during
operation. This is very important during high-speed snow removal
applications where rocks can be thrown by vehicles in front of the
grader. Furthermore, Cat’s wide rear window is slanted ten
degrees to reduce glare back to the front windshield and keep dust
and debris from accumulating on the surface.

Forward Visibility
The toe of the blade and the areas to the inside and outside of the
front tires are easily visible on the Cat motor grader without
leaning in the seat. Good visibility to these areas is especially
important when finish grading along curbs or when gauging
cutting depth from grade stakes.
On the Volvo B-Series machines these areas are obstructed by the
drawbar, lift arms, and wide front console.
Narrower cab posts and cross beams, along with a narrow
instrument panel, maximize visibility on the Cat H-Series. The
angled rear window reduces glare on the front windshield and
keeps dust and debris from accumulating on the window surface.

Operator Confidence

Side Visibility
The heel of the blade is in clear view from the Caterpillar cab (left
photo). The operator can see the graded surface and loose material
as it moves off the end of the blade.
It is difficult to achieve this visibility, from a seated position, in
the Volvo B-Series graders. If the moldboard angle is increased,
the graded surface cannot be seen. The side visibility on H-Series
machines allows for visibility of both the moldboard heel and
graded surface.

Caterpillar — side visibility B-Series — side visibility

Rear Visibility
Caterpillar’s tapered engine doors and angled rear window offer a
significant advantage in rear visibility. The operator can see more
areas where other vehicles, ground personnel, rear tandem wheels,
and the rear ripper shanks may be located. The broad engine hood
and narrow window of the Volvo B-Series unit reduce the operator’s
field of vision.

42 TEJB7031 Cat H-Series vs. Volvo B-Series Motor Graders February 2004
Operator Confidence

The Cat H-Series uses an advanced hydraulic system to deliver Implement Controls
the most consistent and predictable implement response found on
any motor grader.

Efficiency
The Cat load-sensing system provides only the flow and pressure
required to do the job. This efficient design creates less heat and
reduces power consumption. Cat’s variable displacement, load-
sensing pump provides just the right amount of flow and pressure
to match the requirement.

Cylinder Velocities
Because operators make frequent hydraulic corrections to adjust
for constantly changing material conditions, consistent cylinder
velocities are very important. A high degree of finish accuracy can
only be achieved if the operator can predict how the grader will
respond to these necessary adjustments. Cat PPPC valves regulate
hydraulic oil flow to the cylinders so that cylinder speed is
consistent when retracting or extending a cylinder.

Although the updated Volvo B-Series hydraulic system is

equipped with proportional valves matched to each function, the
Caterpillar system offers more consistent cylinder velocities even
when multiple implements are being used at the same time. The
table below shows that the extend and retract speeds for the
Cat 143H were very consistent, with only 4 mm/sec difference.
The Volvo proved to have much greater variation between their
extend and retract speeds, with a difference of 30 mm/sec.

Flow Proportioning
Another benefit of the Cat hydraulic system is balanced flow. The
Cat PPPC valves are more predictable with matched velocities
when extending or retracing a cylinder. The inconsistent cylinder
velocities of the Volvo B-Series hydraulic system become more
pronounced when the operator uses multiple controls
simultaneously. The Cat system proportions flow to ensure that all
implements operate simultaneously with consistent velocities.
When the Volvo B-Series system flow demand exceeds the flow
available from the pump, the system response can become
unpredictable. As a result, some functions may slow down
significantly or stall completely. The Volvo B-Series system does
a reasonable job of proportioning flow — until the flow demand
exceeds the flow available from the pump. When this occurs, the
system response can be unpredictable. Some functions may slow
down significantly or stall completely. Cat PPPC valves
proportion hydraulic flow to maintain consistent cylinder
velocities, even when multiple controls are being used at the same
time. This allows the operator to be more confident, improving
both productivity and safety.

More Modulating Valves Available

The Cat motor grader has the capability of mounting 14 compact
hydraulic control valves under the operator’s platform and the
associated control levers in the industry-preferred positions. The
Volvo B-Series can only offer ten control valves directly in front of
the cab. This difference is important when attachments such as
rippers and snow wings are placed on the machine, because the
additional control levers must be placed in positions outside of the Mounting location for Volvo
industry-preferred positions. auxiliary controls

The Caterpillar PPPC hydraulic valves offer a near linear Hydraulic Modulation
displacement to flow gain. This near linear relationship is maintained and Control
throughout 100% of the implement lever travel. In other words, if the
operator positions the implement lever at 50% of its available throw,
the cylinder will extend/retract at 50% velocity. The resulting
advantage is a greater range of finite implement modulation and a
consistent, predictable feel.
Volvo is not able to match this near linear displacement for 100% of
their implement lever travel. Instead, the Volvo hydraulic valves make
a drastic change in flow gain and cylinder velocities when the
implement lever reaches 70% or more of its available travel. This
results in sacrificed modulation and inconsistency.

In addition to the linear modulation gain, Caterpillar features a

longer lever stroke on the lift cylinder extend function to give
operators the better resolution of control they need to confidently
make fine adjustments during critical cuts.

Machine Control Transmission Control

Smooth shifts minimize disturbances and improve accuracy of the
surface when performing finish work. They also keep heavy loads
moving when shifting up or down. All Cat models, from the 120H
through the 163H, feature electronically controlled transmissions
for smoother shifting under light or heavy loads.
The Volvo B-Series transmissions have more abrupt shifts than
Caterpillar transmissions, reducing the comfort level of the
operator. Note the B-Series poor shift quality when shifting from
fifth to sixth gear and from third down to second gear. The chart
below illustrates how Cat H-Series motor graders provide
smoother shifts in the entire working range of the machine, from
low-gear earthmoving work to high-gear snow removal. Reasons
for the B-Series shifting deficiencies are discussed in the

An additional benefit of the Cat electronic controls is the

overspeed protection feature. If the operator inadvertently
downshifts or makes a directional shift at high speeds, the controller
will sequence the shifts to prevent power train damage. Caterpillar
also offers an optional autoshift transmission. This feature improves
ease of operation by reducing the operator’s work load and
maximizes productivity by automatically shifting the transmission
at optimal shift points, especially in snow removal applications.
Volvo B-Series motor graders do not offer either of these features.

Cat H-Series axle oscillation during wheel lean provides an Axle Oscillation
advantage over Volvo B-Series machines. Caterpillar places the
axle pivot closer to the wheel spindle than Volvo does. This
lessens the axle oscillation that is experienced when the wheels
are leaned, keeping the axle oscillation available for when the
machine travels over uneven terrain.

Caterpillar — front axle Volvo B-Series — front axle

Inching Control
Inching is an important feature on a motor grader. The operator
can use the inching pedal to reduce ground speed in tight quarters.
Jobs like finishing around manholes and cul-de-sacs demand
smooth inching modulation. The Caterpillar H-Series utilizes an
electronic inching pedal that delivers precise control of the
machine in any gear with low pedal effort. Volvo uses a
mechanical system that will loosen over time, sacrificing
preciseness of modulation. In addition, debris and ice can
potentially become lodged in the Volvo mechanical system,
adversely affecting the effectiveness of the inching feature.

All Wheel Drive Cat Operating Modes

Three operating modes are available on the Cat AWD models:
automatic, manual, or off. Automatic mode makes the AWD feature
easy to use. In the AWD mode, front wheel torque is automatically
increased as rear wheel slip increases. The operator controls the
responsiveness of the front wheels by adjusting the torque control
lever. The farther forward the lever, the more rapidly front wheel
torque will increase as slip increases. The AWD mode provides
power to the front wheels only when needed, which reduces
hydraulic system heat, lowers horsepower consumption, and allows
the operator to focus all his/her attention on the task at hand.

Cat Manual mode gives the operator 100 percent control. The operator
adjusts the torque control lever to set a constant torque level to the
front wheels, and can make torque setting adjustments as operating
conditions change. In many situations, an operator may want to
control the front wheels independent of rear wheel slip such as when
trying to remove a machine from a snow drift; when making a tight
turn on snow, mud, or sand; or when working on a side slope.

Volvo B-Series Operating Modes

The Volvo B-Series system offers three modes of operation on its
AWD models — off, manual, and “creep.” Manual mode allows
the operator to match the front wheel aggression setting to
Volvo
specific applications. When the machine is in creep mode, power
is directed to the front wheels only.
The Volvo B-Series creep mode can also develop bounce in light
or loose soil conditions such as sand or gravel. This bouncing
during finish blading results in a washboard effect in the finished
surface. The washboard effect can be more of a nuisance than the
tire scuffing effect, depending on the severity.
For actual data, see Appendix F, page 66.

Anti-Bounce Feature
Front-end bounce can be a problem with AWD motor graders. In
Volvo B-Series — creep mode the automatic mode, the Cat electronic control module can detect
washboard effect
front-end bounce and minimize bounce long enough for the
operator to make an adjustment to the AWD lever.

The Volvo B-Series machines do not offer bounce control. The

“anti-bounce” feature allows Cat H-Series graders to be more
“operator friendly,” increasing both operator confidence and
productivity.

48 TEJB7031 Cat H-Series vs. Volvo B-Series Motor Graders February 2004
Operator Comfort

A comfortable operator is more likely to sustain a high level of Operator Controls

productivity over the entire shift. The Cat H-Series machines are
loaded with features that help keep the operator comfortable and
efficient.

Few construction machines demand as much operator interaction

as the motor grader. A motor grader operator makes thousands of
control adjustments each day. With that much activity, low control
efforts and proper control placement are very important in
reducing strain and fatigue.

Control Efforts
As the following table illustrates, the Volvo B-Series operator is
required to exert a much greater effort than the Cat H-Series
operator. The Volvo B-Series controls are also spaced wider than
the controls on H-Series machines, making one-hand operation
difficult.

operator, reduce fatigue, help maintain operator alertness, and
increase overall productivity.

Heater, A/C, and Ventilation The optional Caterpillar heater and air conditioner work more
effectively than the Volvo B-Series system. Sixteen adjustable
vents are located throughout the H-Series cab to direct air flow to
the operator and to the windows for defrosting.

Air distribution from the B-Series system is limited with only two
vents located below the seat and two additional vents positioned
in each upper rear corner.

Seating Caterpillar H-Series motor graders are equipped with a standard

cloth-covered seat with headrest and a retractable seat belt. A
cloth contour suspension seat is standard on the Cat 140H, 143H,
160H, and 163H. It is available as an option on the remaining
models. All Cat H-Series models offer a contour series air
suspension seat as an option. Volvo B-Series only offers a contour
seat, headrest, and retractable seat belt as options.

angle. The cushions are shaped to hold the operator securely in
place, an important feature during side slope work. The Volvo B-
Series “deluxe” seat has just four adjustments, and its cushions
have minimal contour support. The standard Cat retractable seat
belt is readily accessible at cushion height and is easy to keep
clean. The armrests also fold up to give the operator plenty of
room to maneuver.

Sound Levels Sound levels are an important factor in operator comfort and
environmental responsibility. For motor graders, the primary
source of noise is high fan speed, contributing 76% of the sound
with the engine at high idle and running maximum fan speed.
Volvo’s cooling system utilizes higher fan speeds than the Cat
system, resulting in significantly higher sound levels for Volvo
B-Series graders. Each cooling core draws air from the outside
and returns it into the plenum where the fan is attached. A high
airflow from the fan is required to maintain the air velocity across
each core necessary for proper cooling. To achieve this flow,
Volvo’s maximum fan speed is set at 1750 rpm. The Caterpillar
143H and 163H fan speed is set at 1225 rpm for standard
machines and 1350 rpm for high ambient machines. The test data
shown below was taken from a Cat 143H high ambient machine
with 1350 rpm fan speed. A standard machine with the 1225 rpm
fan speed would have less noise contributed by the fan, resulting
in lower sound levels than what is shown.
