Production Potential
To compare the “real world” performance of the Volvo G726B Productivity Study Results
against the Caterpillar 140H and 163H graders, a ditch building
productivity study was developed. The study involved using Productivity Plot Cross
each machine to perform a predetermined and consistent Section Profile
process to build a 300-foot-long by 50-foot-wide road bed with
a ditch on both sides. Road bed

Averages of the three runs for each machine are shown in the
graphs to follow. The advantages shown in percent are those that
can be claimed with at least 95% certainty, based on the
distribution of the test data taken, even though the average values
may show a higher advantage.
In a direct comparison of the 143H and the Volvo G726B,
production rates were similar. However, the 143H achieved a
faster completion time, better fuel efficiency, and much better fuel
economy. This is a notable achievement for a machine that is
lighter in weight and has lower horsepower than the Volvo
G726B. We will demonstrate why with supporting detail
highlighted later in this bulletin.

Variable Horsepower
Caterpillar pioneered variable horsepower on the 140G in the
early 1980s. Today, variable horsepower is available on all Cat
H-Series graders. Two power settings (VHP) are standard on the
AWD models and available as an option on all other models,
except the 24H. Three power settings (VHP Plus) are available as
an option on the 12H through 163H models. Variable horsepower
is standard on all of the Volvo models; however, they only provide
two power settings.
During snow removal and roading operations when additional
power is required to maintain speed, Caterpillar’s VHP Plus
option offers that additional power in 7th and 8th gear to get the
job done faster.

The Cat transmission’s fifth, sixth, and seventh gears are more
suited to snow removal than Volvo’s. Seventh gear on the Volvo
machine at 20.4 mph is considered by many operators to be too
fast for snow removal applications. Caterpillar’s seventh-gear
speed of 18.8 mph is considered a much better working speed.
Caterpillar’s gear splits within the snow removal application range
are smaller than those of Volvo — a definite advantage during
downshifting and traction limited conditions. The reason — the
motor grader keeps moving, so momentum is maintained.

Reverse Speeds
The Volvo B-Series graders have a limited number of reverse
gears to select from. The Volvo B-Series only has four reverse
gears. Offering more gears allows operators to choose the right
gear for the job. The production advantage is significant,
especially when the operator does not have the space to turn
around or when the length of the pass is short.

Backslope Operation
The relationship of the moldboard heel to the tandem tires is
critical when performing a backsloping operation. Caterpillar’s
extended blade positioning allows the operator to maintain this
critical relationship while cutting backslopes. This gives
Caterpillar a 5° advantage.

front frame, allowing more clearance between the frame and the

the moldboard and the bottom of the circle, allowing large blade
loads to roll freely. Insufficient clearance restricts material flow,
requiring more power to move the same load. It can also force the
operator to reduce the blade load, sacrificing production. Throat
clearance is larger on the Cat grader (left) than on the comparable
Volvo B-Series model (right).

All Wheel Drive Performance All wheel drive (AWD) improves tractive performance in poor
underfoot conditions such as snow, mud, and sand. It also
provides excellent steering and sidedraft control in many
applications including ditching, drifting heavy blade loads,
finishing, or working on a side slope. The Cat 143H and 163H
redefine performance for all-wheel drive motor graders, clearly
outpacing the Volvo B-Series AWD models.
Snow Removal
The Cat AWD system uses dual-displacement hydraulic motors to
drive the front wheels. With dual-displacement motors, Cat
engineers are able to extend the AWD operating range through
seventh gear (18.8 mph) without compromising the high rimpull
at lower speeds. With the Cat 143H and 163H, operators can reap
the benefits of the AWD system in many applications, regardless
of the speed range.
Cat 163H snow removal
Ground-Speed Sensors
Cat H-Series machines use RADAR to determine true ground
speed by using ground-speed sensors that determine how fast the
machine is travelling with respect to the ground. A sensor is also
placed on the transmission output shaft, which precisely calculates
what the machine travel speed should be. The actual ground speed
is then automatically compared to the calculated speed to
determine how much slippage is occurring at the rear wheels. The
system either automatically or manually allows the operator to
adjust the power to the front wheels to efficiently compensate for
Cat ground-speed sensor
this loss in rimpull.

Finish Grading
A basic function of a motor grader is the ability to travel at slow
speeds when the application calls for precision grading.
Every Cat grader comes equipped with the proper gear splits to
match any application. Finish grading is a basic function which is
not limited to only a few select models. Directing power to the
ground through the rear tandems, coupled with skillful application
of the inching pedal, distributes horsepower efficiently with less
chance of disturbing the finished surface.
26 TEJB7031 Cat H-Series vs. Volvo B-Series Motor Graders February 2004
Production Potential
The differing front wheel speeds that result from sharp turns can
also cause a problem with this open loop system. The inner wheel
of the turn will take all of the load, pulling the machine around the
corner, while the outside wheel is pulled along. If the current
displacement characteristic is not identical from the left to right
drive solenoids, this problem can be magnified in one direction, due
to the wheel motor becoming a pump. This results in the left and
right wheels fighting against each other to get through the turn.

Owning and Operating Cost
Fuel Economy The combined engine and powertrain efficiency of the Cat 143H
provide better overall fuel economy than the Volvo G726B. In
order for the Volvo to maintain equivalent fuel economy to the
Cat 143H it must be lugged down below 1600 rpm, at which
point the available rimpull force drops below the 143H.
For actual data, see Appendix E, page 65.
The Volvo motor grader has the fuel fill located at the top front of
the engine enclosure, requiring the operator to climb on the left
tandem and battery box each time the machine is fueled. Volvo’s
engine oil dipstick, transmission oil dipstick, and battery
disconnect are located inside the left gull-wing-style engine door,
which opens easily but requires 40 pounds and two free hands to
close. The service brakes and clutch master cylinders have
separate reservoirs that require routing checks and are located
under the cab.
Electrical
Caterpillar has two fuse panels in the cab that are easily visible
and have a diagram of which circuit each fuse is for on the back
of the cover.
Volvo has a single fuse panel located inside of the shift console to
the right of the operator. A small access panel provides a method
of accessing the fuses; however, it does not provide good
visibility of the fuses. The backside of that panel cover contains a
diagram showing the size of fuses that go into each socket, but
does not indicate their purpose. An operator would have to refer
to the service manual to determine where a fuse for a particular
circuit is located.
28 TEJB7031 Cat H-Series vs. Volvo B-Series Motor Graders February 2004
Durability
Cat motor graders are built to last. With ease of adjustment and
rebuildability designed into our machines, the customer will realize
a higher availability and a reduction in repair costs throughout the
entire life of the grader.
While many factors influence the life of a diesel engine, we will Engine
examine two factors in detail.
• Rated speed — In general, a lower speed engine has a longer
life because of reduced wear and heat loads. Caterpillar has a
10% advantage at 2000 rpm rated speed.
• Displacement — A large displacement engine has lower
internal stresses than a small displacement engine.

Field experience also shows Cat G-Series transmissions had about Transmission
two times more life before overhaul than the Volvo B-Series
transmissions. The original Cat H-Series transmissions were
designed to meet or exceed the durability established by the

into the new H-Series machine to continue this durability
advantage over the Volvo 8400 transmission.

Service Brakes The legendary brakes of the G-Series and original H-Series live
on in the new H-Series. These air-actuated, oil-bathed, multi-disc
brakes have extended life. The Volvo B-Series has a multi-disc,
oil-bathed design similar to Caterpillar’s brakes. Cat service
brakes have significantly more friction material than Volvo
B-Series machines across all models, giving the H-Series graders
a stronger, longer-lasting brake system, with longer intervals
between servicing.

Front Axle Understanding that the design and applications of motor graders
place greater loads on the outer wheel bearing, Caterpillar
designed a front axle that is superior in many ways. Caterpillar
uses a “live” spindle design that places the larger of the two
bearings outboard, where most of the load is carried. The
B-Series uses a “dead” spindle design, placing the smaller bearing
in the location of the greatest stress. The Cat live spindle design
allows the largest wheel bearing to carry most of the load,
extending component life.
The bearings on the Cat front axle are sealed with DuoCone®
seals, and they are encased in lightweight oil for maximum
lubrication and bearing life. Volvo B-Series seals its bearings with
lip seals and lubricates them with grease, making them susceptible
to contamination in wet or muddy conditions. Only routine visual
inspections are necessary with the H-Series front axles, while Volvo
B-Series machines require weekly inspections and periodic greasing
in addition to bearing repacking every 500 hours.

Caterpillar has designed its final drive system to take the majority Final Drive
of the reduction, reducing the stress loads to the pinion/bevel gear
and differential. The Volvo uses tandem drive reduction, placing
higher loads on these areas. In addition, Volvo’s reduction in the
tandems will potentially unbalance the front and rear tandem tires
under hard pulls or braking.

Drawbar, Circle, and Caterpillar’s moldboard slide rails offer adjustability using shims to
Moldboard Serviceability take up the play in the rails, which causes moldboard chatter. As the
lower rail wear strips on the Cat machine wear, the shims can be
adjusted to eliminate the play that develops. Volvo does not allow
the use of shims to adjust the lower moldboard slide rails. In fact,
Volvo suggests replacing them instead. The upper rails are able to
be adjusted, but Volvo does not recommend it. The Volvo wear
strips must be replaced when play becomes too excessive for fine
blade control.
36 TEJB7031 Cat H-Series vs. Volvo B-Series Motor Graders February 2004
Durability
All Cat H-Series motor graders feature an exclusive rolled-ring Caterpillar 140H drawbar
steel forging built for toughness. It has raised wear surfaces to
prevent wear to circle teeth. Volvo B-Series does not offer this
raised wear surface, which decreases the durability of the circle
teeth. The B-Series models use a fabricated assembly with teeth
flame-cut into the flat top plate. Cat also induction hardens 240
degrees of its circle, the most in the industry. This provides added
durability to the teeth.

Hydraulic System Cat H-Series motor graders are equipped with Cat XT-3™ high
pressure hose and O-ring face seals for dry, secure connections.
This tough hose allows Cat machines to run high hydraulic
pressures without significant hose swell, which can affect hydraulic
response and functionality. A rigid, tough hose allows quicker, more
reliable implement response because it will not expand when being
filled with hydraulic fluid. A weaker hose requires more time to fill
because of the swell that occurs as it is filled.

Forward Visibility
The toe of the blade and the areas to the inside and outside of the
front tires are easily visible on the Cat motor grader without
leaning in the seat. Good visibility to these areas is especially
important when finish grading along curbs or when gauging
cutting depth from grade stakes.
On the Volvo B-Series machines these areas are obstructed by the
drawbar, lift arms, and wide front console.
Narrower cab posts and cross beams, along with a narrow
instrument panel, maximize visibility on the Cat H-Series. The
angled rear window reduces glare on the front windshield and
keeps dust and debris from accumulating on the window surface.
February 2004 TEJB7031 Cat H-Series vs. Volvo B-Series Motor Graders 41
Operator Confidence
Side Visibility
The heel of the blade is in clear view from the Caterpillar cab (left
photo). The operator can see the graded surface and loose material
as it moves off the end of the blade.
It is difficult to achieve this visibility, from a seated position, in
the Volvo B-Series graders. If the moldboard angle is increased,
the graded surface cannot be seen. The side visibility on H-Series
machines allows for visibility of both the moldboard heel and
graded surface.
Rear Visibility
Caterpillar’s tapered engine doors and angled rear window offer a
significant advantage in rear visibility. The operator can see more
areas where other vehicles, ground personnel, rear tandem wheels,
and the rear ripper shanks may be located. The broad engine hood
and narrow window of the Volvo B-Series unit reduce the operator’s
field of vision.
42 TEJB7031 Cat H-Series vs. Volvo B-Series Motor Graders February 2004
Operator Confidence
The Cat H-Series uses an advanced hydraulic system to deliver Implement Controls
the most consistent and predictable implement response found on
any motor grader.
Efficiency
The Cat load-sensing system provides only the flow and pressure
required to do the job. This efficient design creates less heat and
reduces power consumption. Cat’s variable displacement, load-
sensing pump provides just the right amount of flow and pressure
to match the requirement.
Cylinder Velocities
Because operators make frequent hydraulic corrections to adjust
for constantly changing material conditions, consistent cylinder
velocities are very important. A high degree of finish accuracy can
only be achieved if the operator can predict how the grader will
respond to these necessary adjustments. Cat PPPC valves regulate
hydraulic oil flow to the cylinders so that cylinder speed is
consistent when retracting or extending a cylinder.
February 2004 TEJB7031 Cat H-Series vs. Volvo B-Series Motor Graders 43
Operator Confidence
Flow Proportioning
Another benefit of the Cat hydraulic system is balanced flow. The
Cat PPPC valves are more predictable with matched velocities
when extending or retracing a cylinder. The inconsistent cylinder
velocities of the Volvo B-Series hydraulic system become more
pronounced when the operator uses multiple controls
simultaneously. The Cat system proportions flow to ensure that all
implements operate simultaneously with consistent velocities.
When the Volvo B-Series system flow demand exceeds the flow
available from the pump, the system response can become
unpredictable. As a result, some functions may slow down
significantly or stall completely. The Volvo B-Series system does
a reasonable job of proportioning flow — until the flow demand
exceeds the flow available from the pump. When this occurs, the
system response can be unpredictable. Some functions may slow
down significantly or stall completely. Cat PPPC valves
proportion hydraulic flow to maintain consistent cylinder
velocities, even when multiple controls are being used at the same
time. This allows the operator to be more confident, improving
both productivity and safety.

The Caterpillar PPPC hydraulic valves offer a near linear Hydraulic Modulation
displacement to flow gain. This near linear relationship is maintained and Control
throughout 100% of the implement lever travel. In other words, if the
operator positions the implement lever at 50% of its available throw,
the cylinder will extend/retract at 50% velocity. The resulting
advantage is a greater range of finite implement modulation and a
consistent, predictable feel.
Volvo is not able to match this near linear displacement for 100% of
their implement lever travel. Instead, the Volvo hydraulic valves make
a drastic change in flow gain and cylinder velocities when the
implement lever reaches 70% or more of its available travel. This
results in sacrificed modulation and inconsistency.

Cat H-Series axle oscillation during wheel lean provides an Axle Oscillation
advantage over Volvo B-Series machines. Caterpillar places the
axle pivot closer to the wheel spindle than Volvo does. This
lessens the axle oscillation that is experienced when the wheels
are leaned, keeping the axle oscillation available for when the
machine travels over uneven terrain.
Inching Control
Inching is an important feature on a motor grader. The operator
can use the inching pedal to reduce ground speed in tight quarters.
Jobs like finishing around manholes and cul-de-sacs demand
smooth inching modulation. The Caterpillar H-Series utilizes an
electronic inching pedal that delivers precise control of the
machine in any gear with low pedal effort. Volvo uses a
mechanical system that will loosen over time, sacrificing
preciseness of modulation. In addition, debris and ice can
potentially become lodged in the Volvo mechanical system,
adversely affecting the effectiveness of the inching feature.
February 2004 TEJB7031 Cat H-Series vs. Volvo B-Series Motor Graders 47
Operator Confidence
Cat Manual mode gives the operator 100 percent control. The operator
adjusts the torque control lever to set a constant torque level to the
front wheels, and can make torque setting adjustments as operating
conditions change. In many situations, an operator may want to
control the front wheels independent of rear wheel slip such as when
trying to remove a machine from a snow drift; when making a tight
turn on snow, mud, or sand; or when working on a side slope.
Anti-Bounce Feature
Front-end bounce can be a problem with AWD motor graders. In
Volvo B-Series — creep mode the automatic mode, the Cat electronic control module can detect
washboard effect
front-end bounce and minimize bounce long enough for the
operator to make an adjustment to the AWD lever.

Control Efforts
As the following table illustrates, the Volvo B-Series operator is
required to exert a much greater effort than the Cat H-Series
operator. The Volvo B-Series controls are also spaced wider than
the controls on H-Series machines, making one-hand operation
difficult.

Heater, A/C, and Ventilation The optional Caterpillar heater and air conditioner work more
effectively than the Volvo B-Series system. Sixteen adjustable
vents are located throughout the H-Series cab to direct air flow to
the operator and to the windows for defrosting.
Air distribution from the B-Series system is limited with only two
vents located below the seat and two additional vents positioned
in each upper rear corner.

February 2004 TEJB7031 Cat H-Series vs. Volvo B-Series Motor Graders 51
Operator Comfort
Sound Levels Sound levels are an important factor in operator comfort and
environmental responsibility. For motor graders, the primary
source of noise is high fan speed, contributing 76% of the sound
with the engine at high idle and running maximum fan speed.
Volvo’s cooling system utilizes higher fan speeds than the Cat
system, resulting in significantly higher sound levels for Volvo
B-Series graders. Each cooling core draws air from the outside
and returns it into the plenum where the fan is attached. A high
airflow from the fan is required to maintain the air velocity across
each core necessary for proper cooling. To achieve this flow,
Volvo’s maximum fan speed is set at 1750 rpm. The Caterpillar
143H and 163H fan speed is set at 1225 rpm for standard
machines and 1350 rpm for high ambient machines. The test data
shown below was taken from a Cat 143H high ambient machine
with 1350 rpm fan speed. A standard machine with the 1225 rpm
fan speed would have less noise contributed by the fan, resulting
in lower sound levels than what is shown.
