LBL Step by step procedure

The purpose of this section is to give you an overview of the steps that are necessary to
establish an LBL array and to start the positioning of the vessel in LBL. More detailed
information is found in other the Help sections.

Overview
The steps are grouped as shown below.
1. Preparations
The transponders to be used in the LBL array are defined with respect to serial number,
channel and parameters.
2. Define the LBL array
The transponders in the LBL array are selected, and their initial co-ordinates are decided.
3. Tp Array & Tp Parameters.
Often the default parameters may be used. Then this part may be omitted
4. Local calibration.
The baselines between the transponders are measured, and the local calibration is done.
5. Prepare for LBL positioning.
The turnaround delays of the transponders and the common interrogation channel of the
LBL array are decided.
6. LBL positioning.
The parameters to be used in the positioning are determined, and the positioning is
started.

The steps that establish the LBL array are done from the menu LBL Array and then select the
LBL array data command.
It is shown below.

The dialog consists of one page for each of the main steps. The pages shall be processed
from left to right.

Assumptions
This step by step procedure does the following assumptions:
! APOS has no information about the LBL array and its transponders in beforehand. If it has,
some of the steps must be either omitted or done in another way.
! The initial positions are established with SSBL. It requires that you have an HPR 418 or an
HiPAP system. If you have an HPR 408 system, the initial positions must be established in
another way.

1. Preparations
Before the transponders may be entered as locations in the LBL array, the following steps
must be done.
1. The transponder serial numbers, channel numbers and type information must be known by
APOS. That information is entered in the Transponder Configure dialog. The New
Transponder dialog is displayed after clicking the Add button. It must be done for all the
transponders in the LBL array.
2. Each transponder is normally in the SSBL mode when deployed on the seabed. If not, it
must be commanded to the SSBL mode with telemetry by using the Transponder functions
dialog.
3. The last digit of the channel numbers of the transponders in the LBL array must be
different, and the first digit must be either even or odd. If the channel numbers of the
transponders do not obey these rules, some of the channels must be changed. It is either
done by changing the internal switches in the transponder before deployment, or with
telemetry after deployment by using the Transponder functions dialog

2. Define the LBL array

You may see the Locations page in the LBL Array dialog for more details.
1. Activate the transponders as SSBL transponders.
2. Sail with the vessel to the centre of the LBL array, and be stationary in that position.
3. Enter the LBL array menu and choose the LBL array data command. Choose the
Locations page.
4. Click the Insert active TPs button.
Now the active SSBL transponders are defined as the locations of the LBL array, and their
SSBL, geographical positions relative to the vessel are used as initial positions. If you get a
question about deactivate positioning after insert, do it and forget instructions in point 7.
5. Decide the accurate depth of each transponder by reading the SSBL depth when being
above the transponder with the vessel.
6. Enter the accurate depth as the depth of the initial co-ordinates.
It is done in the Locations page. Right click on the transponder icon in the page, and
select the Change command. Type the depth as Position depth, and type zero as the
Error ellipsoide Depth.
7. Deactivate the SSBL transponders.

3. Tp Array & Tp Parameters

You may see the Tp Array & Tp Parameters page in the LBL Array dialog for more details.
Usually the default transponder parameters may be used. Then you may skip this part of the
procedure.
1. Choose the Tp Array & Tp Pparameters page.

2. Click with the right button on the symbol of the transponder you want to change
parameters for.
3. Choose the Set transponder parameters… command.
4. Set the new parameter to be used, and click the Set button to transmit the settings to the
transponder on telemetry.
5. Repeat step 2 to 4 for each transponder that shall get new parameters

4. Local calibration
You may see the Measured baselines page in the LBL Array dialog for more details.
1. Choose the Measured baselines page.
2. Check that both the Master and the Slave boxes are All locs.
3. Set Initial offset to a propitious value, f.ex. 20 metres.
4. Click the Start Measure button, and follow the instructions on the screen.
Click the Yes button when APOS asks if it shall switch the transponder mode to calibration.
Click the Accept/Continue when the baseline is measured.
5. Click the Calculate button to do the calculation of the calibrated positions.
Click the Yes button when APOS asks if the error ellipses of the calibrated positions shall
be modified based on the baseline measurements alone. (There are different approaches
for how the error ellipses shall be calculated. More detailed and advanced information is
available in Local calibration and Error ellipses of LBL locations.)

5. Prepare for LBL positioning

You may see the Position setup page in the LBL Array dialog for more details.
1. Choose the Position setup page.
2. Set the Position depth equal to the depth below surface forf the transducer, initially this
will be the vessel's default transducer.
3. If the choice Pulse separation is visible, select at least 50 milliseconds (100ms is default).
4. Click Suggest Turnaround delays button.
5. Select the LBL Interrogation Channel (LIC).
The first digit of the transponder channels and of the LIC must all be either an even
number or an odd number.
6. Click the Set all in LBL position mode button.

6. Start LBL positioning

You may see the LBL Positioning dialog for more details.
1. Enter the Positioning menu, and choose the LBL positioning command.
2. Select the Transducer to be used in the positioning.

3. Check that the Ranges and the Angles checkboxes for the locations are visible, and that
they are ticked.
4. Remove the tick from the Angles checkboxes if the SSBL angles shall not be used in the
calculations.
5. Tick the Activate checkbox.
6. Click the OK button to start the positioning.
