Introduction

• High Damping Natural Rubber bearings

generally provide hysteresis damping up to
around 14%

• Doshin Rubber Product Sdn Bhd had developed

a super high damping natural rubber (S-HDNR)
compounds (24% damping) for the production of
bearings for use in two base isolation
applications in Indonesia.

Rubber Bearing (S-HDRB)
from Doshin Rubber

Project 1:
Hospital Project in
Jakarta, Indonesia

5
S-HDRB Design

• Hospital in Jakarta, Indonesia – initial proposal

by the structural engineering consultants was
to use a combination of LRB + HDRB
• Doshin Rubber proposed solely HDRB
• Thus, the challenge is to maintain the initial
24% hysteresis damping of LRB in the new
HDRB proposal

S-HDRB Design

Higher damping is required due to:

(a) the high design acceleration used in structural design
(b) the building sits on soft ground that further amplifies the bedrock acceleration

S-HDRB Testing

• Compression-shear test (eLab-140)

Simultaneous compression-shear loading

4 cycles @ 100% shear strain
Mechanical properties reported from 3rd cycle

eLab-140 capacity : 20,000 kN ultimate compression

: 2,000 kN maximum shear force
: Max displacement + 500 mm
: Max bearing size up to 1,000 mm diameter

12
S-HDRB Testing

• Compression-shear test (eLab-150)

One of the largest in the world

Capacity : 50,000 kN compression

: 5,000 kN shear

18
Conclusion

• S-HDRB with 24% damping ratio was

developed for the projects.
• Seismic isolation offers as an effective
alternative to mitigate earthquake effects
• It also serves as retrofitting strategy for
existing building / infrastructure
