Fe(II) Iron

Analytical Procedure AP-77

Test Kit 420-C0320.88

SPECIFICATIONS
Method: Disc Comparator
Range: 50 ppb to 1000 ppb ± 50 ppb as Fe(II)
Testing Time: 10 minutes
Glassware Preparation Time: 30 minutes (hot
water bath) or 12 hours (digestion)

DESCRIPTION
Boiler systems are typically constructed of steel and
other iron-based alloys. When corrosion of pre-
boiler components or boiler internals occur, iron in
the +2 oxidation state is released into the bulk Fe(II) Iron Test Kit
water. This iron remains in the +2 oxidation state in
the low oxygen boiler environment. These fresh REPLACEMENT PARTS AND REAGENTS
corrosion products are detected by the Fe(II) test.

FE (II) TEST KIT PROCEDURE

Special Notes:
1. The comparator test tubes should be pre-cleaned prior to initial use to eliminate potential iron contamination from the
glass. This can be accomplished by treating the tubes with Fe-4 (460-S0734).
a. Add 2 mL Fe-4 reagent (460-S0734) to the tubes, stopper and invert.
b. Digest the tubes by either (1) allowing the tubes to stand at room temperature (25°C or 75°F) for at least 12 hours; or
(2) placing the tubes in a water bath that is at or near boiling temperature (approximately 90°C or 190°F) for 30
minutes. (Note: After this heating period, remove the tubes from the bath and allow the solutions to cool to room
temperature.)
c. Empty the cleaning solution and rinse with 1:1 HCl (460-S0726) followed by 3 rinses with iron-free distilled or deionized
water before use. (If this glassware is kept isolated for use in this test only, this pre-cleaning step may be unnecessary
in the future.
2. Also refer to SAMPLING for specific instructions.
Hinckley & Schmitt distilled water is an iron-free water source. The absence of Fe(II) can be verified by performing this
procedure using 15 mL of untreated water from the iron-free water source as the blank solution and 15 mL of the same
source treated with 8 drops of Fe(II) Reagent as the prepared sample. The test result should be less than
50 ppb Fe(II).
