Assignment 1: Group 7

Gas-Fired Power Generation.

Introduction Video by Alexander Beh.

Hello, my name is Alexander beh and today my team and I will explain about
Gas-fired power generation. If you guys are wondering what is gas-fired power
generation. It is one types of power plant that can be found in Malaysia. Natural gas
and oil power plants power gas turbines by burning natural gas, heavy oil or an
alternative gas. Gas power plants can offer increased efficiency from regular power
plants using combined cycle gas turbines. Natural gas plants work in a slightly
different way that’s quite similar to how a jet engine works. Instead of making steam,
they burn a steady stream of gas and use that to drive a slightly different design of
turbine called gas turbine instead.

Operation by Muhamad Fudhail Haziq bin Ahmad Fauzi

Now, i will explain about the operation first, natural gas is burned in a turbine which
drives a generator to make electricity. The exhaust gas is used in a boiler to convert
water to steam. The high-pressure steam is directed into a turbine which turns a shaft.
This shaft is connected to a generator that makes power as it turns. A condenser
converts the steam from the turbine back to water. That water is reused in the boiler

Advantages and disadvantages by Vanessa Lipang Henry

Hi! My name is Vannessa Lipang Henry. I will explain on the advantages and
disadvantages of gas fired power generation. Do you have any idea on the advantages
of gas fired power generation? Here are some of the advantages. First, fuel cost of
thermal power plant is low, heat production system is simple, overall system cost
effective. Gas fired power generation is also a renewable energy, easier maintenance
power station and easy mechanism. Besides having its advantages, gas fired power
generation also have its own disadvantages. Here are the disadvantages of gas fired
power generation.

Diagram by Abernice Ann anak Abert Achillies Nunong

Hi my name is Abernice Ann Anak Abert Achilles Nunong. My task is to explain the
diagram of gas fired power generation. The first compartment is the cooling tower.
Cooling tower is a heat rejection device that rejects waste heat to the atmosphere
through the cooling of a water system to a lower temperature. Next is the condenser.
Condenser is a device used to condense a substance from its liquid state by cooling it.
Then comes the steam turbine. Steam turbine is a device that extracts thermal energy
from pressurized steam and uses it to do steam mechanical work. After the steam
turbine is the compressor. Compressor is a device to increase the pressure to high
enough level. And the compartment is the gas turbine. Gas turbine is the engine at the
heat of the power plant that produces electric current where it can convert natural gas
or other liquid fuels to mechanical energy.

Example by Muhammad Khairi bin Abdul Halim

Surgut 2 is the the world’s biggest gas-fired power station with an installed capacity
of 5,597 MW
The Surgut-2 power station consists of six 800 MW power units and two advanced
gas-fired combined cycle units
In 2011, the power station was extended with two combined cycle units which
capacity 797.1 MW
In 2014, the power station generated 37,886 kWh of electricity – supplying energy to
nearly 40% of the population in Russia.
Next example is telok gong
telok gong consists of 4 units of 110MW gas turbine generators operating in open
cycle mode and an Interconnection Facility

Thank you.
