ACT AMA
Dear Colleagues
Firstly, I wanted to congratulate AMSA on the production of the 2018 Internship Guide and
thank them for the opportunity to contribute to the Guide on behalf of AMA (ACT).
While the graduates of the ANU Medical School already know that the ACT is great place to
live, study and work, not every prospective intern knows that Canberra has a great combination
of city convenience, national institutions and quick traveling times with the added bonuses of
the bush and coast on your doorstep.
The ACT’s major teaching hospital is the Canberra Hospital, with other networked training sites
at Calvary in north Canberra, Goulburn Base Hospital and the South East Regional Hospital at
Bega offering rotations across south eastern NSW.
Combine this with the big ideas and national agenda that’s the heart of Canberra and you can
understand why an internship in the ACT offers many opportunities that aren’t always obvious
at first glance.
Locally, the AMA (ACT) offers support and guidance to interns and other junior doctors
covering the two major areas of workplace relations and careers.
Currently, we are in the middle of bargaining for a new enterprise agreement with our
concentration being on improving access for junior doctors to education expenses and exam
and conference leave together with the perennial issues around overtime.
If you have any queries about your workplace rights or entitlements you can always get in
contact for quick advice and support.
While competitive remuneration is important, I want you to know that we understand that
career opportunities are also a key consideration for you. Career and training opportunities are
constantly expanding in Canberra and will continue to grow as the local region itself continues
to grow rapidly.
The AMA (ACT) offers advice and practical assistance as you move through your career – help
with CVs and practical sessions on interview skills – just to mention two.
Whether it be the convenience of living and working in Canberra or the opportunities that the
local network training sites offer, the ACT is a great place to consider for an internship and the
AMA (ACT) is here to help you every step of the way.

ACT New Grad Perspective
Fiona D’mello
I was both excited and daunted to start being an intern. I was finally starting a job I have
trained for years to do! Having said that, nothing can properly prepare you for the immense
responsibility you have to all of your patients.
Internship is a big step up from being a medical student. You actually get paid, your signature
now has a lot more weight to it, and when someone asks, “Doctor?” you have to remind
yourself it is now you to whom they are referring. Some important lessons I have learned are
that one must be comfortable within their own boundaries and asserting them, be willing to
learn, and also be a team-player. Your support networks and the team you work with is crucial
for one to learn to feel comfortable making decisions affecting patient care.
This is a part of the reason I chose to start my journey here in Canberra. The intern group here
is a tight knit community that allows us to thrive in our own unique experiences. There will
always be someone you can share your day with and debrief with; this community not only
includes the intern cohort, but encompasses the health network. Being relatively small, you get
to know your your colleagues well, in addition to the doctors to whom you look for guidance
and support. You quickly realise that you are an integral part of a team, and it is incredibly
rewarding to be a member of the healthcare community that enables our patients to return to
their daily lives feeling better.
In terms of advice for the Class of 2018, make sure you start your applications and update
your CV early. Having all of that ready will reduce stress later on, and is an important learning
opportunity for when you have to apply for jobs as you progress through your training after
internship. I would also strongly advise ensuring that you take care of yourself, starting now
if you haven’t already. Seek out those resources and supports early, learn what works best for
you in terms of self-care, and know that your colleagues and seniors are there to guide you
and make you the best doctor you can be.
This year has been a mixture of elation, tears, triumph and challenges. It has been an incredible
journey so far. Next year, when writing your discharge summaries, you can rest assured in
knowing that you are the final representative of your team to that patient, who is now going
home. No matter how small, you will make a difference in your patients’ lives - and that is a
wonderful feeling that will never leave you.

or overseas. The Canberra and Calvary Hospitals are
the home hospitals for this network. All interns will
have rotations at the Canberra Hospital. The Canberra
Hospital has approximately 606 beds and busy
outpatient clinics. It is a major trauma and teaching
hospital, associated with the ANU and covers many
specialties. Calvary Hospital is a 162 bed public
teaching hospital, also associated with the ANU.
ACT Health also offers an educational reimbursement
for textbooks and training courses for up to $3,000 (+
CPI) for interns.

NSW AMA
Working as a doctor and within the medical profession has always been exciting, rewarding
and challenging. As you near the end of your medical school studies and prepare to enter the
profession as a newly minted Intern, you will have the opportunity to build and expand your
network of friendships, both personally and professionally, that will stay with you throughout
your life.
As the next generation of junior doctors, about to commence your medical career, whether that
be within clinical practice, research, health policy, global health, remember that that medicine
has limitless opportunities.
You will have the opportunity to meet patients whose lives you will change, and who will
change your life as well as clinical leaders who will become mentors, giving you guidance and
support as well as influencing your clinical practice to become the best doctor that you can be.
Many of your friends, colleagues and mentors will also be a part of the AMA family and
community working towards improving conditions for doctors in training and their patients
and families. I hope that you will embrace the opportunity to become part of the AMA family
and join us in making a difference that positively impacts the lives of your colleagues, patients
and your profession.
I wish you all the best and hope you enjoy your journey.

NSW New Grad Perspective
Tom Morrison
intern at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital
Starting your internship can seem like a daunting step. You suddenly have real clinical
responsibility, can’t leave for “tutorials”, and patients and families will look to you for help in
what can often be the most vulnerable moments of their lives. It is not uncommon and is
indeed expected to at times feel out of your depth.
With these challenges also come great rewards. You’ll form much stronger bonds with other
staff, especially nursing and allied health and really feel like you’re part of the team. Finally
getting paid after so many years of study is also a welcome change.
AMSA has done a great service in producing this guide and it certainly provided significant
assistance to me in choosing where I wanted to do my internship. One thing you should take
solace in is no matter where you work you’ll be well supported and won’t be left out to dry. You
aren’t expected to know how to solve every problem, and if you know your own limits and can
practice safely you’ll be widely regarded as an excellent doctor.
As you think about where you’ll take the next step in your medical journey I encourage you to
talk to the interns and residents at your current hospitals to get the inside word and make the
right choice for you. Congratulations on getting this far, and good luck in the final few months.

NSW Hospital Health Check
Overall, 1107 doctors-in-training (DITs) from NSW completed the Hospital Health Check Survey,
likely just over 20% of the total number of doctors-in-training working in NSW. As many doctors in
training rotate through multiple hospitals and health services, all participants were asked to answer
questions based on ONE hospital in which they had worked the most in the last 12 months.
Included here is the hospitals overview. Responses to key questions were allocated a score 0-100.
Grades then assigned based on arithmetic mean of scores for each question in a given domain.

NT AMA
Welcome to health care in the NT and congratulations on your decision to have an exciting and
stimulating professional and social experience. I would urge you in your spare time to explore
the beautiful natural wonders of the NT such as Kakadu, Katherine, the McDonnell Ranges and
Uluru.
Young doctors that I have regularly spoken to in the NT comment on the rich experience of
medicine that they have exposure to along with the satisfaction of improving the health of
Indigenous Territorians both in the Hospital and the Community.
AMA NT has a strong and proud history of advocacy in Indigenous and other health issues
both within the NT and nationally. As an example, recent efforts by AMANT, in association with
AMA Indigenous Health Task Force, to address the appalling health issue of Rheumatic HEart
Disease in the Indigenous population of the NT has resulted in the formation of the national
END RHD coalition to strategically address this health issue on a national level. AMA NT has
also been very active in working with the NT Government in issues such as alcohol policy and
law reform.
AMANT publishes a quarterly newsletter for members that reports on the work one by AMA
NT and national health issues as well as important information that would assist members.
Please contact AMA NT to view the most recent edition.
ASMOF in the NT is also currently negotiating the new NT Medical Officers EBA with a
particular focus on reform of rosters for junior staff.
Anyone seeking further information about any issues above should contact Fiona Thompson,
CEO of AMA NT, at the addresses listed below.

Congratulations class of 2018 on finally getting to the point of job applications! Northern
Territory is a truly unique location to undertake your internship. There are two health services
for internship in the NT, the Top End Health Service (Royal Darwin Hospital) and Central
Australia Health Service (Alice Springs Hospital & Tennant Creek Hospital).
As an intern at Central Australia Health Service, we look after patients from a catchment area
close to 1/6th of the land mass of Australia. There are many complex social, systemic, logistic,
cultural and language issues faced by our patients and that we as their health care providers
must navigate. Aboriginal Australians make up the majority of our patient demographic,
more than 90% in Alice Springs Hospital and more than 60% in Darwin. Compared to other
locations in Australia our patients are sicker, younger and present later. The remoteness of our
patients compared to our health service and the remoteness of our health service compared to
tertiary referral centres, introduces an additional level of complexity when making health care
decisions.
Like all interns, we have protected, pager-free, paid intern teaching but there is also plenty
of additional teaching in each of the rotations with enthusiastic permanent consultants and
visiting registrars who are often here for 3-12 months and keen to make the most of their
time whilst they’re here. You’ll see diseases you don’t see in other parts of Australia including
Acute Rheumatic Fever, Rheumatic heart disease, tuberculosis, crusted scabies, malnutrition,
penetrating trauma, end stage bronchiectasis in 20 year olds and up north you’ll see tropical
diseases including meliodosis and disseminated crypticoccosis. The opportunities for those
interested in rural & remote medicine, infectious diseases, tropical medicine and indigenous
health are endless.
On weekends and days off there is so much to explore. Whether it be Katherine, Kakadu &
Litchfield if you’re in Darwin or the Larapinta Trail & McDonnell Ranges in Alice Springs, there
is everything from waterholes, 4WD, camping, BMX, hiking & rock climbing to get stuck into.
In Alice Springs you’ll always find someone keen to go on a before work morning hike up Mt.
Gillen for the sunrise.
There is a lot to think about when you’re considering applying for internship. If you entered
medicine with humanitarian intentions, are looking for an experience that will be challenging
personally and professionally, that will be rewarding beyond the medicine alone, that will allow
you to treat some of the sickest patients in Australia and treat diseases typically only seen in
developing parts of the world with first world resources, then a year in the Northern Territory
may be for you.

Congratulations on approaching the final months of your medical degree and on surviving all
those tutorials, PBLs and exams.
Being a medical student is a great deal of fun, but I am positive you will find your formative
years as a doctor more rewarding and some of the best in your life.
Each of you will continue to develop your own professional personality and identity that will
shape your career choices. As you master your chosen discipline, you will discover your
most valuable resources and support are always your colleagues and friends in medicine.
The Australian Medical Association is the embodiment of these ideals and it represents the
collective will of our profession.
At AMA Queensland, we understand there remain numerous challenges ahead of you as you
start your working life as a doctor and balance ongoing education with a home and social life.
To help prepare for the year ahead, attend the AMA Queensland free Intern Readiness
Workshops in Brisbane, Gold Coast and Townsville later this year to help equip you for your
journey in medicine ahead. Keep an eye on the AMA Queensland website at www.amaq.com.
au for registration information and further updates.
At these events, you can also transition your free student membership to intern membership.
Intern membership for 2019 is around $32 per month (and approximately 40% is claimable
back via tax). We will not deduct any payments until mid-February 2019, when you are through
your first pay cycle.
In your intern year, we will provide you with workplace support to ease the transition, and our
team can help you navigate any problems with bullying and harassment, rosters, overtime,
overpayment or underpayment.
We also negotiate your employment agreement during your Resident Medical Officer (RMO)
years and make sure you get the best possible pay, terms and conditions, providing you with
piece of mind.
Look out for the AMA Queensland 2018 Resident Hospital Health Check, an annual
assessment of Queensland hospitals, which rates hospitals from A – E, in relation to how they
treat junior doctors with access to leave, and issues such as bullying and harassment and
payment of overtime. This handy member resource will assist you with hospital preferencing
each and every year and is not available anywhere else.
You can attend our free member Doctor in Training events and cost-price member events
like the annual AMA Queensland Junior Doctor Conference to help you gain the edge in an
increasingly competitive employment market.
Finally, AMA Queensland membership unlocks the door to many savings – save on your
QANTAS Club, Virgin Lounge, Emirates flights, Queensland restaurants, and even on
Volkswagen vehicles. Your membership quickly pays itself back.
To learn more about AMA Queensland and how we can support you in intern year, have a chat
to one of the friendly AMA Queensland Team on (07) 3872 2222 or visit our website at www.

QLD New Grad Perspective
Honor Magon
Hi! My name is Honor Magon and I am a fourth year the intern on your team.
The transition of your intro statement may be the first realisation that you have well and truly, evolved
up into the world of doctorhood. Now YOU are the person with the power of the pen. YOU are the
person expected to find and provide answers. You are now responsible for a portion of this person’s
good care.
This is intimidating, there’s no doubt about it. That’s exactly why you need to have a good think about
the right place for you to complete your internship, because in 2019, that’s where you’ll be spending
the majority of your time.
While all our priorities differ, I’ll share with you a few of the considerations I had prior to choosing my
internship site.
Support
Internship is a vulnerable year. While you are protected by your hospital, you do still have hard days
that will exhaust you physically and mentally. It is vital that you have a solid support network, and that
you build your support network based on what you can cope with. If you are happy knowing that you
can call your mum any time of the day while you’re kilometres away, that’s great. Perhaps you feel
more at ease knowing you can drive to your best friend’s place in 15 minutes. You need to decide what
you can best cope with.
Life
You may have certain things that are chaining you to a certain location, be it family, a partner, hobbies.
It’s self explanatory that you may need to choose a location complementary to those priorities, and
think about what may occur should you not get your first priority.
Familiarity
Some people love to go on an adventure, exploring a different location whatsoever. Some like to stick
with what they know. Obviously, there is an automatic advantage knowing the hospital before you
start work, but by the end of the first rotation everyone tends to equal out. Bear in mind that iEMR is
now being rolled out over more and more locations, so it’s an advantage to definitely be familiar with
the system.
Regardless of where you end up for internship, you will learn a lot, you will have some laughs, and you
will make new friends. Soak up as much as you can during your medical school years about workflow,
communication and safe practise, as that will help you immensely in your working life. And most
importantly, enjoy every bit of medical school in your final year - go on Yacht Week, have that weekend
away in the Yarra Valley, go spoil yourself!

SA AMA
Congratulations on becoming an intern!
I hope you remember this as one of the best times in your life – full of challenges,
opportunities and friendships forged in the fire of shared experiences. Enjoy the moment.
You’ll hear much about the challenges of becoming a junior doctor but don’t let this weigh too
heavily. We know you will want to do the best for your patients and that is as it should be. Yet,
in doing so remember to care for yourselves and each other.
It might feel a bit lonely periodically in the competitive internship environment but your
colleagues — and your professional association, the Australian Medical Association of South
Australia (AMA(SA)) are on your side.
The AMA is very aware of the need to safeguard doctors’ wellbeing and we are continuously
working to ensure safe work hours, appropriate clinical supervision, mentoring and the ability
to seek help when you need it.
We have worked hard for more intern places and other training positions and will continue to
remind policy makers to prioritise training in any policy changes.
As well as providing practical support such as training around job applications, preparing
for private practice and financial tips through our associations with preferred providers, the
AMA(SA) provides you with a community to swap ideas with, to learn from and a voice to share
your ideas about the health system.
It’s important that you take up the opportunity to contribute your views on how to build the
best health system possible – to ensure clinicians have a say in designing a system that works
for them.
At the moment there are many outside influences wanting to control what you learn, what
you practice, how you practice and ultimately how you are regarded in the community. We’ve
seen what happens when administrators, not clinicians, design hospitals, records systems,
outpatient schedules, and the patient mix allowed in the hospital. The result is that the system
does not work well for patients, for doctors or the community.
We’ve seen the impact of decisions such as outsourcing on training places and specialty
programs. So who decides who you will be as a doctor? Should it be technicians, bureaucrats,
insurers, Google?
It has to be you, as doctors, because that’s what makes a profession a profession and not a
‘service provider’.
The AMA has been fighting for doctors’ rights to decide how best to deliver health care for over
150 years and we are still advocating, not because you are a member, but because you are a
doctor and one of us, and we care passionately about how medicine will look and doctors will
practice in the next 50 years.
So we welcome your participation, your thoughts on what sort of a doctor you want to be, and
what the health system should look like in the future.

AMA South Australia
The AMA(SA) presents a strong voice and advocacy body for South Australian doctors from
their earliest career days right through all the years ahead.
This has been especially important lately, as much has been happening in South Australia.
After years of preparation, the new Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH) opened in September 2017,
and presents a modern and new hospital environment, as well as new models of care for
patients. Following federal budget cuts some years ago, the State Government also embarked
on a ‘Transforming Health’ process which meant significant changes and reconfigurations of
various hospital services, including some closures and moves.
The other big ticket ‘new’ item has been the introduction of EPAS (Enterprise Patient
Administration System), which is designed to be a statewide electronic medical record system.
EPAS has been in use across some hospitals for a number of years, gradually being introduced
at new hospitals in the public system – including the new RAH, which is designed as a
‘paperless’ hospital. The RAH is currently using a mixture of hard copy records and EPAS.
Change presents new opportunities, but has also meant uncertainty and some notable
challenges. The AMA(SA) has been concerned, in particular, to seek to protect training
positions from being lost or compromised by service changes.
The 2018 state election has brought in a new state Liberal government, after 16 years of
Labor government. The new government has different policy approaches to health, including
proposing to decentralise the public health system through the establishment of metropolitan
and regional boards of management, as well as indicating it is interested to better engage with
clinicians. It will have the task of ‘what next’ on projects such as the new RAH, which although
now open, has outstanding issues to address, and EPAS, on which it has pledged a review. The
Transforming Health project was indicated as completed by the Labor government shortly
prior to the election.
The AMA(SA) will be advocating for all members in this new and changing landscape, but
particularly for the doctors of the future, who will inherit whatever systems are put in place.
Our focus for doctors in training will be on the quality and quantity of training positions, from
internship onwards; workforce modelling and future planning; mental health, and healthy, safe
and sound workplaces; and staffing and supervision in rural and regional health services.
There are many more topics we advocate on, based on what our members tell us is closest
to their hearts and concerns. Many members are perhaps most motivated by advocacy we
undertake for public health, whereas for others it is about some of the issues that are closest
to home in your working life.
The AMA(SA) will be ready to stand with you if you decide to forge the next part of your career
in South Australia, and we wish you the best for the years ahead.
The AMA South Australia offers career support; wide-ranging advocacy, resources and
information; CPD and training in leadership and management; a CV and interview skills
sessions for postgrad training; doctors’ health support and guidance; and networking via
our DiT committee. There are also financial benefits and discounts through the Ambassador
Card program, and special offers from preferred providers. As well as access to the Medical
Journal of Australia, the AMA’s national medical journal, and doctorportal Learning, an online
CPD tracker, AMA(SA) members also receive our medicSA magazine and The Voice. We also
publish an annual Intern Guide which you can find online here. Lastly, you can also access a
range of news and views on the AMA(SA) website here, as well as keeping up with us via our
SA Doctors’ Facebook Group, LinkedIn and Twitter.

SA New Grad Perspective
Holly Richter
I’m currently doing my internship at the Northern Adelaide Local Health Network. I’m really
enjoying it and I’ve found NALHN to be a great workplace so far. Internship is challenging at
times but there are plenty of support networks in place to make sure your transition from med
school life to doctor life is as smooth and safe as it can be!
There are four Networks that you can work for in South Australia; The Southern, Central,
Northern or Country Health Networks. Each have their strengths and weaknesses! I have
friends working at every one of them and their experiences are varied; some common themes,
however, are that everyone is loving getting paid (!!!) and working long hours proves super
challenging on some of the busier rotations (gen med, colorectal surgery, orthopaedic surgery,
nights).
Each network has its own unique flavour and you need to think about what your personal and
professional priorities are in order to figure out which network might suit you best. Having
said that, the process of being matched to a network is a random one and so you really don’t
have any control over how the allocations happen! A large majority of this year’s interns were
allocated their first preference, but I do know people who were given their fourth one and
it’s important you rank your preferences honestly and don’t try and ‘play’ the system- the
algorithm is designed to give as many people as possible their first preference, so just be
honest when putting those preferences in.
The rotations you work in will depend how your year pans out, so I strongly advise you to
speak to current interns or other junior doctors once you know what health network you’re
going to and get their thoughts on different rotations. Preference things that you like or have
a career interest in highly, and use your ‘free text’ input option to make it clear why you want
those jobs and why you deserve it over someone else! Don’t waste that opportunity; people
really do read what you’ve written and will try to match you up with rotations that you’ve asked
for.
Good luck, enjoy the final few months of med school and get excited for what’s to come. I
loved med school and am so happy with my experiences at Flinders university and with AMSA,
but junior doctor life is even better and you’ll find there’s plenty more out there to look forward
to once you start working!

patient contact and experience. Our Specialists working in the public hospitals look forward to
teaching and mentoring our future doctors. Tasmania offers both basic and advanced training
pathways to almost all specialities with some programs linked with Victoria.
Intern placements while remaining tight around the country are available in Tasmania with the
many from the University of Tasmania Medical School moving around the country.
AMA Tasmania is actively involved in ensuring the right balance of work, teaching and life exist

Intern at Royal Hobart Hospital
Tasmania, so hot right now! Stunning nature ridiculously close by, an oh-so-with-it arts and
culture scene, bearable traffic and a nice cool climate where turtlenecks are acceptable for ~9
months of the year.
Internships in Tassie come in three forms. A ‘rural’ experience at the North West Regional
Hospital (NWRH) in Burnie on the north west coast of our island, a regional tertiary center
experience at the Launceston General Hospital (LGH) or a fully-fledged – all services provided
– capital city experience at the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH). All three are excellent locations
to learn and apply your skills following the long slog of medical school. Essentially as you go
from more rural to city based settings each hospital offers more specialties and more diverse
experiences, as you would expect, but don’t think the NWRH or LGH are inferior, all offer
excellent terms with specialists and trainees keen to teach and involve you in their teams.
The application for Tasmanian internships is centralized through the Tasmanian Health
Service (THS). You submit a CV and two referees for assessment and preference the three
hospitals as to where you would most like to work. Most people are then interviewed and
jobs are allocated out, with the interview apparently being the most important aspect of the
process.
Not everyone gets their first choice, but most do. The RHH is typically oversubscribed and the
NWRH can also receive too many applicants some years due to limited positions.
Personally, I have found internship at the RHH to be an excellent experience so far. I have
been on emergency and cardiothoracic surgery to date and have loved it. The whole THS is
under huge stress with patient load, and the RHH bears the brunt of it, with the other hospitals
referring most acutely unwell and deteriorating patients to the RHH for critical care. This could
take away from the internship experience, but I have not found it to be an issue, although
workload can be high. Teaching is well received and frequent, with weekly specific internship
teaching and most departments offering weekly education on top of this.
Tassie also offers rural GP terms to interns! This is a new program for 2017. You can go really
rural, such as King Island in Bass Strait, home to untouched surf breaks, boutique golf courses
and world class cheese, or you can go kinda rural, like Huonville, a pleasant 40 minute drive
south of Hobart into a valley known for its cider and incest! If interested in these you should let
the THS know when you apply.

VIC AMA
Dear Intern,
Welcome colleague! You have joined a profession with a long and proud history and should
you be an intern in Victoria’s Health Service I invite you to join AMA Victoria.
This is both an exciting and challenging time and although you may have been employed
before in other careers, you may now find yourself as the least experienced member of the
medical team. In addition, you will be finding your way through the complexities of the public
hospital system. However, remembering that your medical colleagues began their careers as
interns, they will appreciate that asking for guidance is both expected and part of the learning
process.
Also I encourage you to join AMA Victoria, the membership organisation representing
Victorian doctors. A close ally of AMSA, AMA Victoria helps countless members with
workplace relations advice, careers coaching and wellbeing support, as well as networking
and mentoring opportunities. Moreover, AMA Victoria’s new Enterprise Bargaining Agreement
provides junior doctors with vastly improved working conditions, including safer working hours
and a 9% pay increase for 2018.
AMA Victoria , through its Workplace Relations team can provide you with the resources to
understand your entitlements as a Doctor -in- Training ( DIT) but also through its many other
services and social events gives you an opportunity to meet with and share experience with a
wider medical community away from health services.
Yours Sincerely,
Dr Lorraine Baker

VIC New Grad Perspective
Julien Nithianandan
It undoubtedly takes you a while to find your feet, but for every embarrassing and challenging
story of the humble intern, there are many more interesting and rewarding tales to share. I
am currently completing my internship at Alfred Health, moving from my emergency rotation,
home to a state-of- the-art trauma centre with helipad, to gastroenterology, one of the many
physician specialities on offer during internship in most metropolitan hospitals.
Born and bred in Melbourne, I’m stoked to be living in officially the most liveable city in the
world. Melbourne culture is renowned for amazing coffee, an evolving arts scene, pop-up
gigs in hidden alleyways, outdoor cinemas, major cricket and AFL sporting events, and
lively nightlife. From a medical perspective, Melbourne is home to the Colleges of Surgeons,
Anaesthetists, Obstetricians and Gynaecologists; world-class research facilities such as
the Burnet Institute and the Melbourne Brain Centre; and two paediatric hospitals, the Royal
Children’s and Monash Children’s Hospitals. And let’s not forget the multiple rural options on
offer, for those passionate about remote medicineand wanting a more hands-on experience,
from the popular Bendigo and Gippsland sites, to hospitals as far out as the Murray to the
Mountains region.
Take note, however, that the Victorian internship system is arguably the most competitive in
the country, and particularly challenging for Victorian-based International students, and even
more so for any non-Victorian applicants. Victoria employs a merit-based or employer-choice
system, where applicants must submit their cumulative academic score, a standardised CV
(research, co-curricular, leadership etc.), two clinical references from consultants, and a cover
letter per hospital. Some hospitals also require a non-clinical reference, and completion of a
face-to- face or video interview. Acomputer match conducted by the Postgraduate Medical
Council of Victoria (PMCV) then matches a candidate’s priority list to the hospital priority lists.
My advice for choosing your ideal hospital is to prioritise the one which best fits your personal
criteria, whether that be workplace culture, quality of education and training, success rates
for and exposure to particular speciality programs, recognition of workplace entitlements
including overtime pay, research opportunities, JMO society, hospital location, past university
affiliation, and proximity to good food and coffee. And my advice for the application process is
to speak to as many interns and senior doctors as you can, attend hospital information nights
and the AMA Victoria Medical Careers Expo, and to research the hospitals to which you are
applying and learn what makes them unique.
Irrespective of where you are placed, you will have an excellent internship. Getting paid,
learning on the job, collaborating with medical and allied health colleagues, and taking
responsibility for patient care are all incredibly satisfying. Good luck!

WA AMA
Starting out in the medical profession will be at once the most exciting and terrifying moment
of many of your lives.
Finally, after so many years of study, learning and exams, you get the opportunity to put your
skills and knowledge into practice (whilst at last earning some money...). Thankfully, for you
and your patients, that will happen under the watchful eyes of more senior doctors who have
years of experience on top of the medical knowledge that you have accumulated.
On behalf of all doctors in WA, I would like to welcome you to our profession. The reality is that
your learning is only just beginning. The quest for improving our skills and knowledge is one of
the defining aspects of Medicine and for good doctors it never ends.
Now is the time for you to learn how to take responsibility for the wellbeing of your patients
and for the continuation of your learning journey – there is no longer anyone looking over your
shoulder telling you what you have to know or do.
Some of you have already decided on your path – that’s great! For the rest – there is no hurry.
Get out there and try your hand in different areas. There is amazing breadth of opportunity in
Medicine and a special niche is available for all of us.
There has been a lot of focus on junior doctor wellbeing over the last few years and for good
reason. Our profession can be tough and unrelenting at times and for some the challenges can
seem to great to bear. The workplace has changed over the years and although you will work
less hours than interns in the past, the pressures exist and the guaranteed career pathways of
the past are no longer so clear. You must look after yourself and your peers. Don’t be afraid to
ask for help as it may not be obvious to others when you are struggling.
If you don’t have your own GP its a great time to find one. You are probably very healthy, but
it is amazing how quickly that can change once you get immersed in work and the other
challenges of life and every doctor needs to have someone to look after them. If you don’t
know who to see, the AMA maintains a list of GPs happy to look after other doctors.
I would also urge you to stay engaged with your profession – you can get involved with the
RMO societies, the AMA DiT Committee, the JMO Forum and many other groups as you
progress through your training. For me, these interactions have been very rewarding over my
career and they have provided me the foundations to become a better doctor for my patients
and the leadership skills to make a difference in our profession.
You almost always get more out than you put in...
AMA Membership is really important for all doctors as the AMA is the only body able to look
after you in almost any aspect of your professional life and provides many services that will
help you navigate the years ahead. The AMA also works hard to put the medical profession on
the front foot in the media and on public health issues and I hope that you will all be proud to
continue your AMA membership throughout your careers, as I have.
For most doctors I know, although they may grumble from time to time about their lives and
some aspects of their careers – they don’t regret their choice of profession. We have a great
job and we get to work in a very good health system.
Welcome to Medicine and good luck!
