Which Came First, Chicken or the Egg? Scientists
May Finally Have the Answer
Which came first: the
chicken or egg? A
question that generally
sparks strong debate
among scientists could
finally have an answer.
The paradox was initially
proposed by philosophers in
ancient Greece in order to find
cause and effect. Now teams of
physicists from the University of
Queensland and the Néel
Institute have collaborated to
answer this ages-long “chicken
or egg” paradox.
The simple
answer is hidden
deep within
s c i e n t i f i c
explanations,
c o m p l e x
definitions and
p r o o f s o f
quantum physics,
and experts have
t h e i r o w n
explanations. Dr.
Jacqui Romero
s a i d i n a
statement quoted
by Phys.org that
the cause and effect
explanation hasn't always been
as straightforward, and it isn't
always the case that one event
caused another.
“The weirdness of quantum
mechanics means that
events can happen without a
set order,” Dr. Romero said.
“Take the example of your daily
trip to work, where you travel
partly by bus and partly by train.
Normally, you would take the
bus and then the train, or the
other way around. In our
experiment, both of these
events can happen first. This is
called 'indefinite causal order'

can observe in our everyday
life.”
Photonic quantum switch
To find an answer, the teams
observed various effects in their
lab. For a more precise answer,
they referred to a special setup
called a photonic quantum
switch. After using this method,
Dr. Fabio Costa explained that
thanks to this device, the order
of events its transformed with
the shape of light, and it
depends on polarization.
“By measuring the polarization
of the photons at the output of
the quantum switch, we were
able to show the order of
transformations on the shape of
light was not set,” he said. “This
is just a first proof of principle,
but on a larger scale, indefinite
causal order can have real
practical applications, like
making computers more
efficient or improving

confused, as it opposes other

The Worst Text to Send Your Partner When You're Mad
Here's how it tends to go down: You
notice that your partner left the kitchen
messy this morning before they went
to work. Or maybe they're late to pick
you up for dinner again. Or perhaps
they had to bail at the last minute on a
party you two agreed to attend
together. Whatever it is that sets you
off, you can't help but reach for your
phone and because you're fuming,
you begin to type the worst text to
send your partner when you're mad.
You're not even really thinking about
what you're typing, because your
evolutionary survival instinct has set
in and rage has taken over your
fingertips. But the reality is that you
should be thinking very carefully
about what you text. The words you
use could not only impact how your
partner responds to the issue, but also
the fate of your relationship in general.
Let that sink in: Even one quick text
can have an impact. So, you want to
choose your words wisely.
Obviously, there's no formula for the
perfect text to send when you're mad.
After all, every individual and
relationship is different, which means
that the right text looks different for
everyone. What you say to your SO
when you're fuming ultimately
depends on the situation at hand. Still,
there are certain things that you want
to avoid saying at all costs. Luckily,
Chris Armstrong, the founder of the
relationship coaching company Maze
of Love, has offered up his expertise
on the subject.
According to Armstrong, the worst text
you can send when you're mad is
anything in the form of something that
sounds like an ultimatum, like, “If you
leave dishes in the sink one more
time, it's over," or, “Either come to this
event with me, or I can't be with you.”
While an ultimatum will certainly get
the message across that you're angry,
it also inherently feels like a threat
(and often an empty one at that). It
also puts a lot of pressure on your
partner, and the truth is, there are
plenty of other ways to express a
boundary or need without resorting to
an ultimatum. When you pose one,
one of several things will likely
happen, according to Armstrong.
Either your partner will see through
the threat and call your bluff, they'll
accept the ultimatum (and potentially
resent you for it), or they'll reject it and
you'll have to part ways over that

issue.
“Avoid phrases that put them in a
proverbial corner with nothing to do
but escape,” he adds.
The bottom line is this: A text
conversation is no place for serious
statements like these, because so
much is lost in a discussion where you
can't see your partners face, hear their
tone of voice, or read their body
language. When you're really
struggling with a partner's behavior
that you feel could damage your
relationship, set aside some time to
talk with them about it face to face.
In addition to ultimatums, Armstrong
says there are other words and
phrases that are best to avoid over
text.
For example, he recommends never
using the word “hate” directed toward
your partner.
“Hate is a very difficult word to come
back from so once you say it,
apologies aren't always going to be
enough to get past,” he explains.
Accusatory phrases aren't a good
idea, either. “Accusations via text are
sure fire ways to elicit anger and
retaliatory accusations or curt
denials,” says Armstrong. “I always
ask clients, 'What is the point of
making an accusation via text?' The
answer is usually to either give the
accused an opportunity to let it sink in
or to avoid direct confrontation.
Accusations via text may avoid direct
confrontation in the moment, but an
accusation with an immediate
opportunity to rebut will build up and
that eventual confrontation will be far
worse.”
Ultimately, the most effective way to
address something that bothers you is
to do it face to face. In fact, 2013
research published in the Journal of
Couple & Relationship Therapy
revealed that using text messages to
work out differences was associated
with lower relationship quality.
However, if you know you aren't going
to see your partner that day, or are
afraid that you might avoid confronting
them entirely if you wait too long, there
are some texting tactics that can help
you to bring up the issue without it
blowing up in your face.
Armstrong suggests always starting
with one of these key phrases:
“I would much rather have this
conversation in person, but [reason
why text is the only option right now].”

"I realize that some of what I'm sharing
is one-sided and I'd love to

These phrases establish good
intentions on your part and show
some understanding and empathy for
their point of view. It's always a good
idea to reiterate that you'd ultimately
like to discuss the matter face-to-face.
It can also be effective to use the
format “I feel ___ when you ___.” For
example, instead of accusing them of
never being on time, you could say, “It
bums me out when you're frequently
late because it makes me feel like
these plans don't matter to you.”
Essentially, the idea is to focus on
explaining the pain you feel, instead of
hurling accusations. When you're
PO'd, it can be tempting to send an
angry text to your partner to let them
know how they've affected you. But
before sending hitting send (or even
typing) anything, pause, take a few
deep breaths and consider what your
end game is. In other words, what are
you trying to accomplish here?
If you want to bring an issue to your
partner's attention in hopes that they
can change a particular habit,
behaviour, or tendency, then you
definitely don't want to put them on the
defensive or shame them in any way.
A simple, "Hey, this kind of bugged me
can we talk about it later?" will open up
the line of communication so that your
SO has time to consider how their
actions have affected you, collect their
thoughts, and discuss the problem
with you in a calm, clear-headed
manner.
Remind yourself of all the positive
aspects of your relationship, which
can be easily forgotten in the heat of
the moment when you're fuming about
something. If you and your partner are
truly dedicated to making your
relationship work, you'll find a way to
resolve whatever's bothering you
whether it's over text or not.

Smith cut a forlorn
figure after the Storm's 21-6 loss to
Sydney Roosters but still bristled
when the fans' treatment of Slater
was brought up, agreeing it was
disrespectful.
Slater, 35, is considered the
game's greatest fullback but he is
clearly not the most popular after
controversially escaping a
shoulder charge ban to draw the
curtain on his 16 season career in
the grand final.
The former Test No.1 was jeered
every time he touched the ball,
even copping them before he even
got onto the field.
Boos echoed around ANZ
Stadium when Slater's name was
mentioned in the list of NRL 2018
retirees honoured pre-match and
received another serve when
footage of him warming up in the
dressing room lit up the venue's
big screen.

disrespectful, Storm captain Smith
said: “I don't think there is any
other way to say that.
“He's only ever been someone
good for the game, I think he
deserved a bit more respect than
that.”
There was no respite for Slater,
whose post-match TV interview
was almost drowned out by boos
as he tried to collect his thoughts
after the shattering loss.
Slater kept his composure, almost
laughing at the crowd reaction as
he was interviewed by Immortal
Andrew Johns.
“It's not how it's panned out, that's
footy,” a philosophical Slater told
Johns.
“We tried our best but that's the
way it goes. I'm really grateful for
the career I've had, the friends I've
made and what rugby league has
done for me.”
Unlike the crowd, Smith savoured

career with a person like Billy,” he

“Things he has been able to
achieve on the football field you
just sit back in awe of it.
“That was the closing chapter
tonight. In the years we have spent
together the good memories far
outweigh the bad.”

CAMERON Smith and his
Melbourne Storm troops
endured a nightmare
eighty-minutes as the
Sydney Roosters proved
simply unstoppable.
It marks the fourth grand final loss
for Smith throughout his incredible
career and while it wasn't a repeat of
2008, the Storm looked just as bad
tonight as they did 10 years ago.
As the loss sunk in for Smith and his
troops, fellow teammate Cooper
Cronk soaked up the win with his
Roosters pals.
Cronk left the Storm following the
2017 season and reports quickly
began to filter through of
a fractured relationship
between the team's big
three (Cronk, Smith and
Billy Slater).
The feud appeared to
reach breaking point
during the 2018 season
when Cronk and Smith
shared an ice-cold
handshake after a tense
battle between the sides
in Adelaide earlier this
year.
The former Storm star
hugged all of his fellow
teammates before reaching Smith
and the tension appeared palpable.
On Sunday night the bitter feud
added another chapter after the final
siren sounded out around ANZ
Stadium as Cronk brushed Smith
once again.
Throughout the game the duo
tangled on several occasions as
Smith hit Cronk on several Smith
lined up Cronk and took him to the
ground in a blatant attempt to test
out his former sidekicks durability.
The second hit from Smith didn't sit
well with Cronk who retaliated by
getting on top of his former captain
and grabbing him around the throat..
But it was Smith who drove in the
real dagger when he stood on the
podium after enduring the painful
grand final defeat.

dominant display put forth by the
Roosters, but there was something
missing …
“It's obviously a disappointing
match for us to leave for the last one
of the season. Sometimes you have
to take your hat off to the opposition
when they play too well and the
Roosters were that tonight,” Smith
said.
“They played a fantastic game.
Right from the opening whistle they
knew exactly what they needed to
do tonight and they executed
perfectly.
“Congratulations to the Roosters,
finishing minor premiers and NRL
premiers, that's a great effort.
“To Jake (Friend) and Trent
(Robinson) and the rest of the
Roosters squad and particularly
Luke Keary, you were fantastic
tonight, well done.
“I think our entire organisation, all of
our sponsors, to everyone who
helped get us on the field every
week, all of our coaches and support
staff and medical staff, you do a lot of
work to get us ready every game.
You've done a great job this year.
Thanks so much for the hard work
you put in.
“To the rest of our team, boys,
congratulations on a great year.
Unfortunately we came up against
good opposition tonight and fell
short. We'll be back next year.
“A special mention to a couple of my

Smith never mentioned his former
teammate of 14-seasons, a player
he not only played with at the Storm

Australian sides.
After thanking a host of others along
with his “good mates”,
Smith's omission of
Cronk didn't go
unnoticed.
In an even more brutal
turn of events, Cronk
delivered a cold-hearted
return of serve when
speaking to Channel 9's
Brad Fittler after the
game.
Cronk spent several
moments talking about
the incredible feat of
claiming the victory
before turning his attention to his
former club.
“While I've got this moment, I
probably have to thank Melbourne
Storm for everything they've done
for me. In particular, Billy Slater and
Ryan Hoffman who have made me a
better player and a better person,”
Cronk said.
“It's hard for me to put into words
what tonight was, on one side is a
club that provided me with
everything, the Melbourne Storm,
and the other club, the Roosters
provided me with a chance to start a
family and play the game I love.”
Once again, the omission of his
former captain Smith was incredibly
glaring. Think it's safe to say the
bridge between Smith and Cronk
has been well and truly burned.

Are energy drinks bad for you and do they really
contain bull sperm?
From Red Bull to Monster,
energy drinks have always
b e e n a s o u r c e o f
c o n t r o v e r s y. T h e y ' r e
incredibly popular amongst
youngsters but many parents
are concerned about their
children consuming the
drinks - mainly due to the
high levels of caffeine and
sugar they contain.
This concern is especially
heightened now as the
government has proposed an
energy drinks ban for teenagers
and children -
meaning those
under a certain age
would no longer be
able to purchase
them. But are the
drinks really bad for
you, what do they do
to your body and
what are they
actually made up of?
Here's everything
you need to know
about them. Energy

Are energy drinks
bad for you?
According to a study by the World
Health Organisation , which was
shared by the NHS , the caffeine
content in energy drinks can pose
some major health risks.
These include caffeine overdose
(which can cause nausea and
vomiting, palpitations,
convulsions, high blood pressure,
and in some cases even death),
type two diabetes, sensation-
seeking behaviour, poor dental
health, obesity and neurological
and cardiovascular system
effects.
They can cause a number of
serious problems for pregnant
women who consume them -
including late miscarriages, low
birth weight and still births. A study

Journal of Health Sciences in 2015
also found that excessive energy
drink consumption is also linked to
anxiety, insomnia, gastronomical
upset, headaches and diuresis.
What are energy drinks?
The NHS website defines energy
drinks as "a non-alcoholic drink
that contains caffeine, taurine (an
amino acid) and vitamins, in
addition to other ingredients".
They go on to explain: "They were
originally introduced in Japan
during the 1960s and became
increasingly popular in Europe
during the 1980s and 90s, possibly
due to the rise of rave culture.
"It is now commonplace,
especially among young people,
to mix energy drinks with alcoholic
spirits. Many pubs and clubs will
sell jugs or 'fish bowls' of Red Bull
and vodka.
"Energy drinks are marketed for
their perceived or actual benefits
as a stimulant, for improving
performance and increasing
energy. Companies often have
sponsorship deals with extreme
sport franchises, presumably to
sell the message that energy
drinks are edgy and energetic."

drinks include Red Bull, Rockstar,

Emer Delaney, a dietitian and
spokesperson for the British
Dietetic Association told The
Telegraph that energy drinks don't
linger in the body but the
ingredients quickly pass through
and within ten minutes they reach
the intestines where sugar is
absorbed, leading to higher blood
sugar levels.
She continued: "By twenty
minutes levels have reached a
maximum and drinkers will feel
e u p h o r i c ,
stimulated and alert
from the sugar.
“By now all the
caffeine will also
h a v e b e e n
absorbed and you'll
be at peak caffeine
levels and your
brain will be
m a x i m a l l y
stimulated. At
around 40 minutes
your brain will
release a chemical
called dopamine,
which is a 'reward
chemical' – the type
that's released during smoking,
gambling or sex. So around now
you'll be feeling good.
“But by 60 minutes your liver
begins treating the caffeine like a
poison and tries to eliminate it,
which is why these drinks have a
diuretic effect which can be
dehydrating. And between 90
minutes and two hours later you
get what's termed a sugar crash.”
