Client Profile

Clients Robb and Brienne Stark is a young couple in their early 20’s, They
have no kids nor pets that reside in the home. They are free spirited
people who love to enjoy life to the fullest. Robb loves music , he’s a
musician and Brienne she enjoys taking photos, she’s a photographer,
Together they both have a modest income. They just purchased a
Romanesque Modern style apartment, that is surrounded by a variety of
artist, venues and local bands. They want to add some new features in the
new home similar to the Scandinavian Modern Style. Some of things the
would like to add is a custom designed built in storage piece with display
space, being that they love to travel and collect, this space will display
things that to they love the most from their travel’s. Giving their
personalities they are very bubbly and upbeat couple, So their living space
wants to have the same feel, bright and bold colors, yet still with a look of
elegance.
ADJACENCY MATRIX
ARCHITECTURAL STYLE
Rounded moldings The place they purchased is a
Romanesque style apartment on Main
Street in Pittsburgh. This architectural
Blind Arcades style started in
Medieval Europe. Romanesque
characteristically incorporated
Ashlar bricks semicircular arches for windows, doors,
and arcades; barrel or groin vaults to
support the roof of the nave; massive
Arches piers and walls. Each building has clearly
defined forms and frequently has very
regular and symmetrical plans. The
overall appearance is of simplicity when
compared to the Gothic buildings that
Thick Walls were to follow. The style can be identified
across Europe, despite regional
characteristics and a range of different
materials.

Design Statement

The Stark home

The designing of the Starks home in the Scandinavian Style gives me the opportunity to show the existing
elegance in this architectural space. Adding hardwood flooring to give an look of open space .With a soft
muted accent wall in place along with accent pieces creates a modern flair. Hues and shades of blue gives a
feel of calmness and relaxation while White furniture throughout the home showing sharp clean lines
enhances the elegant rhythm of the Scandinavian interior style. Splashes of bright yellow on textiles (pillow’s &
throws) will set the overall tone. Merging pieces of black and white photographs along with chrome music
sculpture’s will create a dynamic ambiance of the clients hobbies. This color scheme sets the tone in the home
as a place of peace and tranquility but yet very exciting and welcoming.
Image and Color Palette Complimentary Colors
A combination of blue, red, green and
yellow

This picture really stood out to me, because of the clients interest in
music and photography. This would be the perfect focal piece. This image
has an array of color, I went in and desaturated some of the background
color to make more muted tones to compliment the Scandinavian style.

2018 Kmonk
The Advantages and Disadvantages in having a sprinkler system in a home.
Its been proven home fire sprinklers save lives and property. NFPA’s Fire Sprinkler Initiative highlights research proving how sprinklers
reduce the risk of death, injury and property loss. The initiative also showed there was a 90% lower death rate when sprinklers and
smoke alarms are hardwired in to a residence. (NFPA.ORG)
A sprinkler system can not only save lives, it can reduce damage to your property if functioning properly. Keep in mind that
approximately 44% of system failures are due to a lack of maintenance, so even though a sprinkler system exists in your home, it
doesn’t mean you can ignore maintenance necessities. Relatively Inexpensive and Reduced Insurance Premiums
Some business owners, in an effort to save a little money, won’t invest in the best fire sprinkler system. However, investing in a sprinkler
system can actually save money on insurance premiums in the long run, not to mention protect a business from serious fire damage.Low
Maintenance
Once installed, fire sprinkler systems are actually relatively low maintenance. They only require inspections on an annual basis to
determine their functionality, but other than that they can last upwards of 20 years without any major repairs or upgrades needed.
(HQ and Lauderdale, 2018)

The residential sprinkler system is very expensive to install and involves so many formalities (YAO and CHOW, 2001). Additionally, if
the pipes are not installed properly, and the drainage of the building it could result in water damage. When installing systems there
is plumbing cost, permitting, inspections, backflow preventers and flood alarms. When living in cold weather areas you must also
protect from freezing pipes.Ongoing Maintenance The second disadvantage to residential fire sprinklers is that they require ongoing
maintenance, testing, and inspections. It is recommended that a fire sprinkler system be inspected annually to ensure that the system is functional
and will work in the event of a fire. On occasion, sprinkler heads will need to be replaced due to rust or other damage, and the heads may need to
be cleaned to remove dirt, dust and other buildup. Unfortunately, inspecting and repairing fire sprinkler systems is not cheap. This task must be
done by a trained professional, and this comes at a cost. If you are barely staying afloat as it is, or have trouble remembering home maintenance
needs, installing fire sprinklers that need routine maintenance may not be a great choice for you.. (Cooperators.ca, 2018)
Identify if sprinkler systems are required in new residential construction in your locality.

International Code Council decided in 2008 that every new American home should have fire sprinklers. To date,
industry groups have helped block efforts to make sprinkler systems mandatory in new homes in at least 25 states.
Only California and Maryland, along with dozens of cities, have adopted the International Code Council’s
recommendation and required the devices.

In Atlanta and Savannah GA the 2012 International Residential Code but has implemented amendments. The
intent of the amendments is that fire sprinklers shall not be mandatory in one- and two-family dwellings. However,
the provisions for fire sprinklers are to remain in the code for use when the builder/developer or owner chooses to
install fire sprinklers as an option.

In the city of Pittsburgh, May 2017 a blaze broke out in the towers downtown and claimed the life of an elderly
women (WPXI news). New regulations were proposed in Sept. 2018 to have all high-rise buildings to have
automatic sprinkler systems installed. The building owners would have 12 years to comply with the regulations,
which are part of the state building code (WPXI news).

Explain if you feel they should be required in all renovations of existing residential buildings.

Our opinion is that it should be your own choice, After researching the Pros and cons of the sprinkler
system, It can be of great advantage. Rather than lose all of your possessions in a fire, the sprinkler will
save the things that are most precious to you. It is much easier to have things cleaned from the water
damage, while in a fire it’s a complete loss.

Justification For Week 6
I can honestly say, This class has been lots of fun and very informative, All of the
assignments combined gave you a change to show off your creative side when it
comes to designing. The most challenging part for me was doing the legend in
autocad. But now I completely understand the purpose of having this done and
the importance in it. Going through all these different steps before you get to the
final decision make complete sense, It give you as the designer a chance to see
how things look together and how you have time to make necessary changes
before presenting this to your client. You really never realize how important
things are like furniture size, room placements, color scheme etc. plays a big role in
this career choice. So for my choices, I feel I made quite a few nice choices that
brought me to my final decision and I was very happy with it as same as my clients
will be as well.

•How did you develop your concept for the project? What were your design
goals, and how were they achieved? How does your design reflect the
culture and diversity of the client who will occupy the space? I started by
consulting with the clients to find out exactly what the desired in their new
home. From there I started doing my research on the style, colors,
furniture, lighting and flooring. The style they desired to have was the
Scandinavian Modern Style. The item and materials chosen for this house
was doing solely on research and constant communication with the clients,
The clients likes music as well as photography, so focused on their interest
but still sticking with the style selected.

•How may have working on your schematic plans led to

revising some of your design decisions? Identify how
human functions and spatial relationships determined your
design planning. Working with the schematic is very
Important, this helps you make positive decisions without
all the extra work. It taught me by doing this helps with
furniture placement as well sizing. Being able to sketch
out your project before making it come to life is a very
important step the you want to take the time to do. It will
save lots of un wanted work and stress.
Reflecting

During this pass 6 weeks, I can honestly say I’ve learned a vast amount of important information when
it comes to home design. The things that will stick to the most is the furniture sizing, when you decide
you like a certain piece, you really never think of the sizing in some cases its to late, now you have to
go back and try to re order and hope they have the size you need. This is very important to pay
attention to. You can find yourself with an area that is very cramped. This is not a way to do business,
so this is something you want to take the time to do when your consulting with the client as well as the
manufacturer your buying your pieces from. The kind of materials you decide to use is very important
as well. When adding pazazz to a room, make sure you give your clients choices to chose from. The
things you like may not be their choice, even though you’re the one doing the designing you still
want to consult with them through the whole process of the project.
