HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000: Configuration General Best Practices
Initial Configurations
System
o Minimum raw capacity per node pair is 1.2TB.
o The Storage Base must have either zero or an even number of drives.
o An all LFF configuration is supported. The Storage Base may be deployed with no drives
as long as the attached LFF enclosure(s) contain the minimum required quantity of
drives.
o The HP 3PAR StoreServ 7400 2‐node Storage Base includes two 1U rack filler panels.
The best practice is to install those filler panels in the 2U space directly above the 2U
node enclosure keeping that space empty in case the user wants to upgrade the array to
four nodes in the future.
o 4‐node configurations should be balanced. At minimum, deploy the same types of
drives on both node pairs, even if the drive quantities differ between node pairs. Best
practice is to identically configure both node pairs.
o When the configuration includes multiple enclosures, the best practice is to use RAID
configurations that permit HA Cage. HA Cage configures the RAID striping so that the
system can withstand the loss of an entire Drive Enclosure.
Enclosure
o Minimum enclosure configuration is a Storage Base with no additional Drive Enclosures
o The Drive Enclosures must have an even number of drives, with a minimum of two.
o Max number of Drive Enclosures is 5 per 3PAR StoreServ 7200 node pair and 9 per 3PAR
StoreServ 7400 node pair.
o When configuring an array that includes LFF and SFF Drive Enclosures, arrange the
enclosures in the rack so that all of the 2U enclosures (Drive Enclosures and node
enclosure) belonging to one node pair are together and all of the 4U enclosures
belonging to the node pair are together.
Drive
o Minimum drive quantity per node pair is 8 for SAS Fast Class, 8 for SAS SSDs, and 12 for
SAS Nearline. The minimum applies to each new drive type included in the array. Drive
type is defined as spindle speed and technology. The 2TB and 3TB 7200 RPM drives are
the same type, Nearline. The 100GB and 200GB SSDs are the same drive type – SSD.
5
o HP strongly recommends RAID6 for Nearline drives
Small Form Factor (SFF)‐specific configuration practices
o SFF drives may be loaded into the Storage Base enclosures, the Upgrade Node Pair
enclosure and the M6710 drive enclosure.
o SFF drives must be loaded in pairs of identical drives with a minimum increment of 4
drives, beginning with the leftmost slot, slot 0, and filling to the right, leaving no empty
slots between drives.
Large Form Factor (LFF)‐specific configuration practices
o LFF drives may be loaded into the M6720 drive enclosure.
o LFF drives must be loaded in pairs of identical drives with a minimum increment of 4
drives, starting at the bottom of a column, leaving no empty slots between drives in the
column. Columns of drives in the M6720 enclosure must be of the same type (SSD or
NL) and, for HDDs, the same rotational speed. Drives of different types may not be
mixed in a single column. It is permitted to have empty columns between columns
containing drives. Different columns do not have to contain the same number of drives.
o An all LFF drive configuration is permitted, leaving the Storage Base Enclosure empty.
SSD specific configuration practices
o SSD‐only configurations are permitted.
o Maximum of 120 SSDs per node pair.
o The SFF and LFF SSDs allow the user to create SSD volumes that stripe across SFF and
LFF enclosures.
Upgrade Best Practices
If future capacity upgrades are expected, include enough Drive Enclosures in the initial configuration
so that there are some empty bays in each enclosure after all of the drives have been added.
Drive Enclosures can be added one at a time.
Minimum upgrade drive quantity is 4 drives per node pair, or 2 drives per enclosure (counting
enclosures that support the drive’s form factor), whichever is larger.
Add upgrade drives in identical pairs to an enclosure.
When adding upgrade drives, add equal numbers of drives to all enclosures that support the form
factor of the drives.
When upgrading capacity in a 4‐node configuration, the best practice is to add equal quantities and
types of drives to both node pairs.
Best practice is to run Autonomic Rebalance (also known as tunesys) after adding drives.
When adding the HP 3PAR StoreServ 7400 Upgrade Node Pair install it immediately above the HP
3PAR StoreServ 7400 2‐node Storage Base.
The table below summarizes best practices for Initial Configuration and Upgrade Alternatives for 3PAR
StoreServ 7000 systems.
6
In order to provide a lower cost entry point, the HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 supports 2-node and 4-node systems with no
added Drive Enclosures. Addition of enclosures can be done in increments of 1 within permissible limits.
Caution!
With the HP 3PAR architecture it is important to balance the workload (i.e., IOPS and/or bandwidth)
as evenly as possible across all available nodes, ports, Drive Enclosures and Drives, as a system
configuration that has nodes with substantially different load may not deliver the full performance of
the hardware.
Special Case Configurations
Some unbalanced configurations are permitted.
o While the best practice is to add drives in “columns”, that is equal number of drives in
all enclosures that support the drive form factor, the system will support configurations
where the full column is not filled. For example, consider a 3PAR StoreServ 7200 with
five (5) add‐on Drive Enclosures and 24 450GB 10K RPM drives, arranged as four (4)
drives per enclosure. The user wants to add SSDs but does not need a lot of capacity. It
is permissible to configure eight (8) 100G SSDs across four of the enclosures (two (2) in
the Base Enclosure and the remaining six (6) configured in pairs in three Drive
Enclosures).
o While the best practice for 4‐node configurations is to maintain identical configurations
on each node pair, the system can accommodate unbalanced configurations. It is
required that both node pairs have the same types of drives, but the quantity of drives
and number of enclosures can differ if needed. If an asymmetrical configuration is
needed, note that large differences in configurations between the node pairs will cause
performance constraints.
7
Building HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000: Best Practice Configurations Process
3PAR StoreServ 7000 Best Practice configurations can be built through the following 8‐step process:
Step Process
o
1 Calculate number and o Estimate front end IOPS and MB/sec required by application
type of drives required o Use Storage Optimizer to determine drive quantities and types that
meet the performance requirements and capacity requirements.
http://ent92.sharepoint.hp.com/teams/storage-performance-
tools/default.aspx.
o Verify that number of drives will meet capacity requirements (TB).
Capacity requirements should also reflect needs for sparing, etc., -
see Appendix A (Note that the 3PAR StoreServ 7000 systems
default to one spare drive for every 24 drives.)
o Round up drive count to a multiple of 2
o Consider future storage growth
2 Calculate number of o Divide number of SFF drives by 24 to calculate minimum number of
Drive Enclosures 2U SFF enclosures required (2U SFF enclosures include 2U SFF
required Drive Enclosures and controller node enclosures)
o Calculate the number of LFF enclosures (4U in size) required by
dividing the quantity of LFF drives by 24 (LFF drives can’t be
installed in the controller node enclosure)
o In most cases, the best practice is to balance drives across
enclosures
o If HA Cage is required, ensure that enough enclosures are included
to permit HA Cage for the RAID levels involved
o If future growth is expected, only partially fill the enclosures
3 Select front end o 4 8Gb/s FC ports are built in per node pair
connectivity options o Consider need for host connectivity and Remote Copy connectivity.
o If necessary, add one optional adapter card per node (four 8 Gbps
FC ports or two 10 Gbps iSCSI/FCoE ports per adapter)
4 Select cables o Select optical cables to connect hosts to Controller Nodes.
o Note that SAS cables used to connect nodes with Drive Enclosures
are included with the enclosures. Normally SAS cables do not need
to be ordered. SBW/Watson will add 6 meter SAS cables if the
configuration requires more than one rack.
o Select 1GbE copper cables if Remote Copy over IP is desired.
5 Select cabinets o If factory integration into an HP rack is selected, SBW/Watson will
automatically configure base and expansion rack(s)
o Field racking into existing 19 inch racks is permitted
6 Add Service Processor o Require 1 Service Processor per system. The Virtual service
processor is provided free. Hardware Service Processor is optional
and can be ordered in case Virtual environment is not available.
7 Select software o HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Storage provides software suites to
simplify ordering see Appendix C
8 Select options for o Select Host Bus Adapters, switches, and cables for connections
storage networking between hosts and storage

HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000: Detailed Configuration by Component
HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Base Configuration
The base configuration defines the model for each system. It includes the 2U enclosure(s), two
Controller Nodes per 2U enclosure, and 24 SFF drive slots per 2U enclosure. The 3PAR StoreServ 7200
supports a fixed configuration of two Controller Nodes in a single 2U enclosure, while the 3PAR
StoreServ 7400 scales up to four Controller Nodes in two 2U enclosures.
3PAR StoreServ 7000 Controller Nodes are the fundamental building blocks for performance and
connectivity. They are always deployed in pairs (“node pairs”) in an Active‐Active configuration where
the same volume can be exported from all nodes. The number of nodes required is driven by
performance, availability and capacity requirements for the initial configuration and future growth.
Each node includes:
2 built‐in 8 Gb/s FC ports (labeled FC‐1 and FC‐2)
2 built in RJ45 ports: 1 GbE for Remote Copy (labeled RC‐1), 1 GbE for management (labeled MGMT)
Two 4‐lane 6 Gbp/s SAS port for Drive Enclosure connection (labeled DP‐1 and DP‐2)
Optional HBA (either four 8 Gb/s FC or two 10 Gb/s iSCSI/FCoE)
Controller interconnect (StoreServ 7400 only) (labeled Intr 1 and Intr 2)
Cache Memory
9
The decision on whether to select a 3PAR StoreServ 7200 or 7400 will be driven by performance,
capacity, and connectivity requirements, both initially and longer term. To select the appropriate system
use the Storage Optimizer for performance calculation and the SWD Sizer for capacity and connectivity
configuration.
HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Drive Enclosures
Drive Enclosures (analogous to “Drive shelves or Chassis” on other systems) enable the addition of
storage capacity. Drive Enclosures are of two sizes; 2U containing 24 SFF slots and 4U containing 24 LFF
slots. Drives are added directly into Drive Enclosure’s slots.
Drive Enclosure configuration affects availability and ease of future upgrade. Highest availability is
achieved with enclosure level HA (HA Cage). Future upgrades are easier when Drive Enclosures are
already in place and the upgrade is simply a matter of adding more drives.

HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Drives
Drives are ordered and deployed directly into a Controller Node Enclosure or a Drive Enclosure:
HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Connectivity
The HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 provides built in ports as well as one PCIe expansion slot per node. The
built‐in ports include two SAS ports for connection to the Drive Enclosures, two 8Gb/s FC ports and one
1Gb/s Ethernet port for Remote Copy. The PCIe slot supports a 4‐port 8Gb/s FC adapter or a 2‐port
10Gb/s iSCSI/FCoE adapter.
11
As shown in the figure above, the 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Controller Node includes:
Two built‐in RJ45 ports, 1 GbE port for Remote Copy over IP, and 1 GbE port for management.
Two built‐in 8 Gb/sec FC ports for disk or host connectivity.
One expansion slot for optional 4‐port FC adapter or 2‐port iSCSI/FCoE adapter.
Back end configuration
On the 3PAR StoreServ 7000 systems, Drive Enclosures are
daisy chained from a SAS port on one node to the next
Drive Enclosure in the chain, and from the last enclosure in
the chain to the corresponding SAS port on the other node
in the same Node Enclosure, assuring redundant paths
from each node to each Drive Enclosure on each chain.
Depth of daisy chaining is limited
o 7200’s limit is 3 Enclosures deep
o 7400’s limit is 5 Enclosures deep.
Alerts will be posted noting the condition if limit is
exceeded. This is also flagged in checkhealth.
Note: In the event of a drive enclosure failure, the cabling
scheme will enable to maintain connectivity to the
remaining drive enclosures.
Front end connectivity
HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Storage provides flexible front end connectivity options.
Optional expansion cards (one 0 or 2 cards per system, 0 or 2 cards per system, 0, 2 or 4 cards per system, 4-
PCIe Slot per node) either 4-port FC or 2-port either 4-port FC or 2-port port FC or 2-port iSCSI/FCoE,

Each node in a node pair (a node pair is composed of the two controller nodes in a single 2U
enclosure) must have the same number and type of adapters. FC and iSCSI/FCoE adapters may not
be intermixed in a node pair.
The 4 ports of the FC adapter can be individually configured to connect to a host or to a remote
array in an RC configuration.
The two ports of the iSCSI/FCoE adapter can be individually configured by the user as iSCSI or FCoE
(Note: FCoE functionality will be enabled in a future release).

The number of components that will fit in a rack varies and is determined by the interior U‐
space of the rack.
Expanding the HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000 in to an expansion rack is permitted when the
configuration exceeds the capacity of the primary rack.
One 6 meter SAS expansion cable kit is required for every node pair that must access drive
enclosures in the expansion rack. Each 6 meter SAS expansion cable kit contains four 6 meter
SAS cables.

Appendix A
3PAR StoreServ 7000 Storage Systems
On 3PAR StoreServ 7000 Storage, the default for spare space is to ensure 1 Drive worth of space (of the
largest Drive) for every 24 Drives, with a minimum of 1 Drive’s worth of space assigned to sparing.
In a mixed environment, spares are required by Drive type, such that the default requirement for spare
space on mixed systems is the sum of the following three components (note that FC in this context
means Fast Class):
1. If SSD is included: 1 Drive worth of spare SSD space for every 24 SSDs, with a minimum of one.
2. If FC is included: 1 Drive worth of spare FC space (of the largest FC Drive) for every 24 FC Drives, with
a minimum of one.
3. If NL is included: 1 Drive worth of spare NL space (of the largest NL Drive) for every 24 NL Drives, with
a minimum of one, less spare space allocated for FC Drives.
Appendix B: Performance Considerations
When selecting and configuring an HP 3PAR system, performance requirements are a key consideration.
In this section we briefly review several key performance topics. Generally, Storage Optimizer is the
best tool for estimating system performance – http://ent92.sharepoint.hp.com/teams/storage‐
performance‐tools/default.aspx.
Max FrontEnd Performance
3PAR StoreServ 7000 Storage:
The following table provides max front‐end performance numbers for 3PAR StoreServ 7000 storage
systems. Note that with 3PAR StoreServ 7000 storage systems, performance per node pair can be higher
if SSDs are utilized. RAID 1 and RAID 6 HDD information is provided by Storage Optimizer with 15K RPM
drives. RAID 5 and SSD values are estimated.
