    This document provides instructions for setting up an experiment to demonstrate the principle of moments. Students are given various masses and instructed to balance a meter rule horizontally using different combinations of the masses. They then record the distances of the masses from the fulcrum and calculate the torque (moment) of each mass. For each trial, the students notice that the total torque of the masses on one side equals the total torque of the masses on the other side when the meter rule is balanced.

    PRINCIPLE OF MOMENTS FORM TWO EAST

    1.You are provided with four masses 200g,100g,60g and 50g,a metre rule,string and a stand.

    Set up the apparatus as shown below.

    Support string

    Balance the metre rule alone and record its balance point...............................................cm.

    Start with the 200g mass as W1 and the 100g mass as W2, balance the metre rule horizontally and
    record the distances of the masses from the support string.

    2.Repeat the procedure above with the 200g mass replaced by 60 g mass as W1 and W2 as the 50 g
    mass.

    Balance the metre rule horizontally and record the value of the distances below from the support
    string.
