ACADEMIC PLAN FOR FORM FIVE

ENGLISH LANGUAGE 2010

1.0 OBJECTIVES
By the end of Form 5, learners should be able to

• Talk about their experiences and exchange ideas with friends and relatives;

• Ask questions and respond to questions with relevant answers;

• Make plans and arrangements with friends to do something or go somewhere;

• Obtain information from various sources and present these ideas to friends orally and in writing;

• Read widely and enjoy poems and short stories; and

• Show an awareness and appreciation of moral values and love towards the nation.

2.0 SWOT ANALYSIS


2.1 Strengths
i) Some of the students are committed towards improving themselves in learning English as a
second language.
ii) The students have a fixed time for studying and also doing their homework or revision
especially during extra and night classes.

2.2 Weaknesses
i) Majority of the students are not able to speak in English neither do they take initiative to
speak in English.
ii) Most of the students do not sufficiently expose to English in their daily lives.
iii) Most of the students do not have a good basis of grammar and they tend to speak “broken
English”.
iv) A few of the students are illiterate hence affecting them in learning English language.

2.3 Opportunities
i) The students can be exposed to English materials such as newspapers and storybooks
(printed media) through the use of library in school.
ii) Songs and films (electronic media) can be used as materials to enhance the students’ ability
in learning English language hence motivate them.
iii) The set up of a remedial class for the very weak students where they can be taught (at least)
basic usage of English language.

2.4 Threats
i) Most of the students do not have the preference to read English materials such as newspapers
or storybooks.
ii) Some of the students are very weak in English language hence it is possible to

5.0 STRATEGIC PLANS


5.1 General Strategies
a. Monthly Tests

Operation: Conduct monthly tests once in every month to measure the students’ understanding of the
lessons taught.
Operators: All Form Five English teachers.
Period: Throughout the year.

b. Practices on Past Years’ Exam Papers


Operation: Give practices on the past year SPM questions to familiarize students with the exam
format.
Operators: All Form Five English teachers.
Period: From March to October

c. Quizzes on Literature
Operation: Give quizzes from time to time to assess students’ knowledge of the subject learned.
Operators: All Form Five English teachers.
Period: Throughout the year.

d. Extra Classes
Operation: Conduct extra classes once a week focusing on writing and literature.
Operators: All Form Five English teachers.
Period: March to September.

6.2 Specific Strategies


i) Excellent Students
a. Language Week

Operation: Encourage students to participate in the competition and activities organized during the
language week.
Operators: All English teachers.
Period: Language Week in March.

b. Reading Programme
Operation: Encourage students to read more an English materials such as story books, magazines and
newspapers. Students who read more than a fixed number of books will be given a present.
Operators: All Form Five English teachers.
Period: Throughout the year.

Journals Writing
Operation: Encourage students to write journals everyday in order to improve their writing skills.
Students who write the most journals in English will be given a present.
Operators: All Form Five English teachers.
Period: Throughout the year.

ii) Average students


Language Week
Operation: Encourage students to join or watch the programmes and activities organized during the
Language Week.
Operators: All English teachers.
Period: Language Week in March.

b. Copying Model Essays


Operation: Give students one model essay once every two weeks to copy and learn by heart.
Operators: All Form Five English teachers.

iii) Weak students


a. Drillings
Operation: Apply drillings in teaching and exercises assigned, in both spoken and written forms.
Operators: All Form Five English teachers.
Period: Throughout the year.

b. Remedial Classes
Operation: Conduct remedial classes for those borderline students to help them pass the subject.
Operators: English teachers involved
Period: Throughout the year.

c. Buddy Support
Operation: Divide students into mix-ability groups for group study and project works so that students
with much better English command can help weaker students in learning.
Operators: Students with better English command.
Period: Throughout the year.
