Welcome to the 2018 Sydney Con International Jazz Festival.

Professor Anna Reid

Head of School & Dean
The Sydney Conservatorium of Music is
delighted to welcome so many lovers of
jazz into the building for our second annual
Jazz Festival. Jazz has been at the centre
of our curriculum since 1976 and many of
our graduates have become key players in
the field. It is wonderful then to give our
current students, and the public, this great
opportunity to hear and work with
Australia's and the World’s best during the
festival!  It is extraordinarily exciting
watching students’ music grow in new
ways when they respond to the voices of
other jazz players. We hope to see you at
SCIJF Artistic Director the Festival.
David Theak

This festival was formed in 2017 with

Australian Jazz, both established and new,
at its core….its not only the astonishing
visiting artists that we are including under
the “international” umbrella but also our
own incredible Australian artists that are
worthy of inclusion on any international
stage, especially our own. Featuring 18
ensembles, almost 100 performers, 6
masterclasses, 5 world class venues, the
program is diverse, wide ranging in its
influence, and we sincerely hope it’s got
something for everyone ranging from the
completely unexpected to legends past,
current and future of Australian jazz. Come
and join us for a one-day celebration of one
of the world’s most vibrant and creative art
forms, Jazz.

In the ten years since her arrival in New York City, Gretchen
Parlato has emerged as one of the most inventive and
mesmerising vocalists of her generation.

In an artful communion of space, texture and a

genre-bending repertoire, she has introduced a musical
sea-change, making the power of subtlety front and centre
in jazz. Widely acknowledged as the most original jazz
singer of her generation, Parlato has been heralded by the
press and jazz legends alike. Style Weekly gives insight to
her live performances, saying "in performance, jazz vocalist
Gretchen Parlato is a revelation… her diaphanous voice
expands into an instrument of impressive range, rhythmic
sophistication and emotional power." The Jazz Breakfast
even picks up on the differences between her records and
live performance, commenting, "the New York-based
Californian and her band are terrific on record, but in live
performance they fill the music with even more energy,
stretching it like some magic pliable plastic into new and
exciting forms.

The rhythmic and dynamic expertise of all four is

extraordinary. They shift the accents around, they pause, and
fall back in perfectly, they deepen the groove and then
´shallow´ it gently again."

"Her voice is a conflux where hope, sensuality and tragedy all

merge... the most original jazz singer in a generation.” - Steve
Greenlee, Boston Globe

"I think in an inconspicuous way, Gretchen Parlato knows how

to play the same instrument that Frank Sinatra played. There's
no one out there like Gretchen. She's true blue." - Wayne
Shorter

"75 years ago, nobody sang like Billie Holiday - today, nobody
sings like Gretchen Parlato" - Wilbert Sostre, All About Jazz

Vancouver born, Brooklyn residing pianist/composer

Kris Davis has blossomed as one of the singular talents on
the New York jazz scene, a deeply thoughtful, resolutely
individual artist who offers “uncommon creative adventure,”
according to JazzTimes.

Originally from Tucson, Arizona, Tony Malaby has been

permanently based in New York since 1995 and has been a
member of many notable jazz groups including Charlie
Haden’s Liberation Orchestra, Paul Motian's Electric Bebop
Band, Mark Helias' Open Loose, Fred Hersch's quintet and
Walt Whitman project, Michell Portal's Birdwatcher, various
projects with Daniel Humair and bands led by Mario Pavone,
Tim Berne, Chris Lightcap, Kris Davis, Angelica Sanchez,
Michael Attias and Marty Ehrlich.

One of musics top up-and-comers, a veteran of the NY

Downtown scene and one of Australia’s most exciting and
inventive percussions can only deliver a scintillating
meeting of the minds and ears.

"The bussed-about pianist is expert at bringing beauty to

abstraction." - Jim Macnie, Village Voice

"As she does throughout Aeriol Piano, Davis draws you in so

effortlessly that the brilliance of what she’s doing doesn’t hit
you until the piece has slipped past you." - Lloyd Sachs,
Jazz Times

"A freethinking, gifted pianist on the scene, Davis lives in each

note that she plays. Her range is impeccable; she tackles
prepared piano, minimalism, and jazz standards, all under one
umbrella. I consider her an honorary descendant of Cecil
Taylor and a welcome addition to the fold." - Jason Moran,
Art Forum - Best of 2012
International Artist ——

Spill

Magda Mayas - piano & clavinet

Tony Buck - drums, cymbals & percussion
Concert —— 4pm - 5pm
Recital Hall East

“Spill is the Berlin-based duo of Magda Mayas on piano and

Tony Buck on drums. While we've all heard pianos played
percussively, it's much rarer to hear someone play the drums
with as much attention to melody as Buck. High-pitched
bowed cymbals form harmonic sequences with brushed
straw, wood on wood popping and bass thump drags. This duo
isn't the kind where one person challenges and relents and
waits for their partner to do the same. The friction they
generate is instead the result of being so continuously and
seamlessly intertwined that conflagrations of star-burning
intensity naturally appear at every other twist. Mayas has a
spectacularly gifted ear for timing, and translates it into her
hands on the keys, giving Buck the freedom to create more
and more unusual combinations of melody and rhythm. This
duo is one of those rare groups where not only is the
instrumentation perfectly matched, but the style with which
the musicians approach their instruments is so personal that
it's astonishing how well it all comes together." Andrew
Choate - Facsimile Magazine

“The next night’s highlight was the duet by Tony Buck

(percussion) and Magda Mayas (prepared piano). Harmonics
seeped from all that they struck, scraped and wrung out
producing a luscious ebb and flow of complex layers. Lost in the
evocations of this piece, I imagined at one point that I was
hearing the everyday sounds of a small town, notated and
reproduced in musical form. Eyes closed, I lost track of
instrument identity sometimes and had to look back at the
stage to understand exactly what was creating these sounds
so full of cadence, resonance and melody.” - Tony Osborne,
The Now Now Festival 2011 - Real Time Arts

"There’s just 36 minutes of music here, but every second of it is

interesting. (..) but there’s no attempt here to emulate the
iconic piano and drum duos of the past – Coltrane and Ali,
Taylor and Roach. Mayas and Buck create their own intimate
languages and in the process deliver something very special
and exactly the right length." - Brian Morton, The Wire

“Mr. McAll adopted a geyserlike cadence, with
phrases grouped in billowing gusts. His notes fell

54records is a non-profit, peer reviewed, Australian music label launched in 2017.

We exist to release and promote quality new Australian jazz and improvised music.
High Quality recordings, minimalist artwork featuring the best of Australia’s
incredible array of cutting edge musicians. We want nothing to distract from the
listening experience and as little to get between the musician and their listeners.

We release three CD’s per calendar year and a digital back catalogue of Australian
classics that are no longer available. The ethos of the label is based on minimising
costs and maximising profit for artists so that the process of recording, creating and
broadcasting new music continues to exist in Australia. All releases are auditioned
by a peer review process using a group of Australia’s most prominent performers
to decide on any new release.
