Internship Proposal
Norwood Elementary
Deepening Not Adding- Tech Tuesdays
Rationale

This school year will be my sixth school year as a kindergarten teacher at

Norwood Elementary and my second year as the co-technology liaison. Over
the past few years, I have seen the county grow into a technology model for
other school systems across the state. We now have 1-1 devices for every
student as well as 3-D printers and interactive whiteboards. Norwood Elementary
has been fortunate to have had student devices available before the county’s
program started. We also have had interactive whiteboards for over 10 years.
Our teachers and students have become accustomed to teaching with
technology every day. Our students are starting school as early as pre-k knowing
how to use computers. However, in the past few years, we have become
stagnant on the SAMR and ACOT scales of technology integration. Our teachers
are using technology the same way they did when we first received 1-1 devices
four years ago. Our school's goal this year is to “deepen, not add” to what we
are doing with instructional strategies, climate, and culture. This year the
technology committee would like to adopt the same strategy and have our
teachers go deeper with the technology we have, instead of adding on new
forms of technology. As a school, we are always looking for the next innovation
that will help our students to grow. We have spent a few years looking when we
already have the necessary resources. Our students are now at a level where
they are comfortable and familiar with the computers, so we need to take this
opportunity to show them how to use more tools and become more efficient.
The same sentiment can be said for our staff, we are all comfortable with what
we know and have students do, but it is time to investigate a more
transformative way of teaching with technology.
Participants

We have 5 classroom teachers in grades kindergarten through third grade.

Norwood also has a pre-kindergarten teacher, four special areas and four
special education teachers. Our goal this year will be to help classroom and
special area teachers deepen the way they use their 1-1 devices. We will also
open our technology sessions to the undergraduate interns and other support
staff in the building. Based on a survey that is being sent to the staff we will also
consult with and have 1-1 meetings with staff who are new to the building and
county. Myself and the other technology liaison will be hosting and conducting
the meetings. We will also invite teachers who are already using the tech tool in
an innovative way to share as a featured teacher.
Objectives

Over the course of this school year, my goal is to have teachers move up on the
SAMR model. I would like to accomplish this by making technology more
understandable and creating a comfortable environment for asking questions
and taking risks. Each tech Tuesday will be based on the needs of the teachers.
Staff will participate in surveys each quarter to determine needs and interests.
We will then host technology Tuesday based on those needs and wants to help
teachers design lesson plans using technology. Each teacher will be working on
their own individual goal since everyone is on a different step of SAMR.
- Teachers will use the SAMR model to describe their personal goal for
the year.
- Teachers will be able to determine where on the SAMR model a lesson
is
- Teachers will create and implement innovative technology lessons that
are above the SAMR level they started the year on.
Change

Our school has been using 1-1 devices for four years now. Like the ACOT
teachers who moved into the appropriation phase at year 2, most of our
teachers are also in the appropriation phase and have been for about a year or
so. Teachers are staying in this phase longer than previous phases because they
can see a difference in how they were teaching before with limited technology
and feel comfortable with what they are doing. To help our teachers move out
of this phase it will be crucial for members of the technology team to model and
show ways to use technology in a more innovative way. One obstacle we will
face is the first of Ely’s eight conditions, dissatisfaction. Most of our teachers are
comfortable and satisfied with the amount of technology and innovation they
are using in their classrooms. New teachers, however, may feel more dissatisfied
since they are unsure of how to use the computers. Some of our tech Tuesdays
will feature another person from the building acting as the expert, this way
teachers are learning from each other and not just myself. Like most schools, we
have the resources, but time will be another hurdle. I am hoping that with our
schedule and needs-based professional development teachers will find time in
their busy schedules. We are fortunate to have an administration that is
innovative and sees the benefit in moving up on the SAMR model. Their
commitment to this goal and leadership will help to ensure buy-in from teachers.
As a teacher, I know that having snacks and treats is the one way to ensure I
stay happy during a meeting. We will have treats or snacks for each tech
Tuesday to help keep the staff morale high during tech Tuesdays.

Since my goal is to have teachers move up on the SAMR model I want to start
every meeting with an image of SAMR. The teachers will be able to think of
where they are, and where they want to go. We will also do our best to include
examples from teachers around the building who are on different levels so that
teachers can see the possibilities of different innovations in their own school.
Each Tech Tools session will be led by a featured teacher. This will be a teacher
in the building who is comfortable with that tool and can show what they have
done in their classroom using that tool.
Online Learning Component
We will be hosting formal and informal technology professional development on
Tuesdays. Some days will have a topic and an agenda whereas others will be
informal. For each formal Tech Tuesday will record the main explanation of the
technology tool and post it on our shared drive in the Tech Help folder. This way
teachers who were unable to attend will be able to watch on their own time.
This will also be beneficial for new teachers in the coming years or interns who
want to learn about a new tech tool after the meeting has already happened.
The folder will also contain links to any handouts as well as the assessments
completed after each meeting.
Evaluation

At the beginning of the year, teachers will be asked to complete a survey based
on needs and wants. In addition to this survey, they will then write where they
are on the SAMR scale and why. At the end of my internship we will hand out
the SAMR scale again, teachers will say where they are now, and why they
believe that is where they. They will also be asked to share a lesson that
demonstrations this growth.

Each session we will collect a sign-in sheet, the assessment, and pictures from
the session. The form below is what is being used as a sign-in sheet. I will also use
the reflection portion on my plan and timeline to record notes or any reflections
for the future.
