We would like to invite you to take part in our study. Before you decide we would like you
to understand why the research is being done and what it would involve for you. One of
our team will go through the information sheet with you and answer any questions you
have. Talk to others about the study before making a decision if you wish.

What is the purpose of the study?

The purpose of this study is to find out more about the steps you take when foraging for
wild food and what would could be a useful aid to you. I am also looking to find out more
about the foraging community overall and how you interact.

Who is doing this research and why?

I (Hannah Brzezinka) will be carrying out this research myself, with supervision from Jon
Sutton and Dr. Steve Summerskill. This study is part of a Student research project
supported by Loughborough University.

Are there any exclusion criteria?

You should not partake in this study if you have not “foraged” before.

What will I be asked to do?

You will be asked a set of questions about the steps you take when foraging, and about
any friends/people you know who forage.

Once I take part, can I change my mind?

Yes. After you have read this information and asked any questions you may have if you
are happy to participate we will ask you to complete an Informed Consent Form, however
if at any time, before, during or after the sessions you wish to withdraw from the study
please just contact the main investigator. You can withdraw at any time, for any reason
and you will not be asked to explain your reasons for withdrawing.

(for children – they should complete an Assent Form and their parents will complete an
Informed Consent Form)

However, once the results of the study are aggregated, (expected to be by 7/12/18), it may
not be possible to withdraw your individual data from the research.

Will I be asked to attend any sessions and where will these be?

It is not necessary to attend any sessions for the interview stage, as this can be
communicated via telephone, it may be necessary to meet with myself to test potential
prototypes. This can be located wherever you are most comfortable.

How long will it take?

The interview stage will take a maximum of 15 minutes, and prototype testing will last 10-
20 minutes.

Are there any disadvantages or risks in participating?

There are no risks in participating.

Data Protection Privacy Notice

Loughborough University will be using information/data from you in order to undertake this
study and will act as the data controller for this study. This means that the University is
responsible for looking after your information and using it properly. Loughborough
University will keep identifiable information about you for 2 years after the study has
finished/ until 23/01/21. The University’s Data Protection Officer can be contacted at:
dp@lboro.ac.uk.

What personal information will be collected from me?

Your personal information will not be necessary therefore data will be kept anonymous.

How long will my personal data be retained?

Personal data will be retained until 25/6/21.

Will my taking part in this study be kept confidential?

You will be assigned an ID at the start of the experiment. Your name and ID will be kept in
a separate file throughout the experiment and your name will not be included in any data
processing.

On a separate file, your ID and your demographic information in addition to collected data
(through devices) will be stored. This file will be processed and may be shared publicly on
the internet.

Your voice recording will not be shared with anyone apart from the Investigator (Hannah
Brzezinka) and her supervisors (Jon Sutton, Steve Summerskill). Once the study is over
(expected 25/6/19), voice recordings will be permanently deleted.

Your data will be stored on the investigator’s laptop or devices where she needs to
conduct her study and research on throughout the duration of the study. These devices will
be secured by a password and kept away from others.

How will the data collected from me be used?

Your results will be securely stored on a laptop, anonymised and processed. Some of
these anonymous data will be shared publicly.

The results will be published in the investigator’s course assessment and portfolio.

What is the legal basis for processing the data?

Personal data will be processed on the public task basis.

Individuals’ rights to erasure and data portability do not apply if you are processing on the
basis of public task. However, individuals do have a right to object.

NB: Informed Consent is still required for all studies for legal and ethical reasons
even though ‘consent’ is not the legal basis under GDPR.

Will my data be shared with others?

Data will be shared with supervisors (George Torrens, Karl Hurn, Samantha Porter)

How long will the anonymised data/samples be retained?

If data is being archived permanently to a data repository this should be stated here and
should state clearly what data is being archived and the access conditions. Explicit
clarification should be given for any studies which include video or audio recording and/or
the collection and disposal of tissue samples. Details of how long anonymised data and
samples will be retained should be stated.

How long will the anonymised data/samples be retained?

Transcriptions from interviews will be archived permanently to a data repository, which you
may request access to. Voice recordings and photographs will be retained until 25/6/21.

What if I am not happy with how the research was conducted?

Is there anything I need to do before the sessions?

Keep a record of the process you take when you go out foraging, and think about the tools
you usually use. Please consider what you might use the food you have collected for.

What are the possible benefits of participating?

By taking part, you are helping to give me a wider understanding of the way foraging is
carried out, allowing me to eventually create a useful product to help beginners.
