Heat Transfer 1
The report has to be submit to the tutor staff before tutor class on 8 November 2018
Solve all problems. Each member of group has to submit their reports respectively. The lowest grade
of the reports will be a grade of all member of the same group. Each report is covered with a page
cover consisting of homework number and number of the group.
1. Water at 27oC flows with a mean velocity of 0.85 m/s through a 1‐km‐long pipe of 0.25‐m inside
diameter.
(a) Determine the pressure drop over the pipe length and the corresponding pump power
requirement, if the pipe surface is smooth.
(b) If the pipe is made of cast iron and its surface is clean, determine the pressure drop and pump
power requirement.
2. Velocity and temperature profiles for laminar flow in a tube of radius ro = 10 mm have the form
with units of m/s and K, respectively. Determine the corresponding value of the mean (or bulk)
temperature, Tm, at this axial position.
3. Fully developed conditions are known to exist for water flowing through a 25‐mm‐diameter tube at
0.01 kg/s and 27oC. What is the maximum velocity of the water in the tube? What is the pressure
gradient associated with the flow?
4. Atmospheric air enters the heated section of a circular tube at a flow rate of 0.005 kg/s and a
temperature of 20oC. The tube is of diameter D = 50 mm, and fully developed conditions with h = 23
W/m2 K exist over the entire length of L = 2.5 m. For the case of uniform surface heat flux at qs =
1000 W/m2, determine the total heat transfer rate q and the mean temperature of the air leaving
the tube Tm,o. What is the value of the surface temperature at the tube inlet Ts,i and outlet Ts,o?
o o
5. Cooling water available at 10 C is used to condense steam at 30 C in the condenser of a
power plant at a rate of 0.15 kg/s by circulating the cooling water through a bank of 5‐m‐
long 1.2‐cm‐internal diameter thin copper tubes. Water enters tubes at a mean velocity of 4
m/s, and leaves at a temperature of 24oC. The tubes are nearly isothermal at 30oC.
Determine the average heat transfer coefficient between the water and the tube, and the
number of tubes needed to achieve the indicated heat transfer in the condenser.
