Systems Word Problems

By: Alejandra Lugo

Subject/ Grade Level: Unit Topic: Functions
Algebra 1/ 9th
Date: November 5, 2018 Estimated time: 60 mins
TEKS objective:

A.5 Linear functions, equations, and inequalities. The student applies the mathematical process
standards to solve, with and without technology, linear equations and evaluate the
reasonableness of their solutions.

(C)*solve systems of two linear equations with two variables for mathematical and real-world
problems
Lesson Goal(s):

Students will be able to create a system of linear equations from a word problem and solve.

Learning Objective(s):

We will identify key words that will help us create the system and understand what the answer
means.

I will be able to create a system and write a sentence on what the answer means.

Academic Language:

 System of linear equations

 Elimination
 Substitution

Instructional Delivery - Activities

(students will be in groups of 3 or 4)
Warm Up
Solve an easy system using elimination.
1. Notes with word problems where we focus only on creating the system of two linear
equations. (Guided Practice)
2. They try one problem on their own and we check the answer as a class. (IP)
3. The students practice solving problems as a group (Assessment)
Group roles for this day:
a. Recorder: highlight key information
b. Manager: create the system
c. Checker: makes sure the system is correct and solves it
d. Presenter: shows answer and explains what the answer means
Closing: Randomly pick on groups to answer while checking as a class

Accommodations/Modifications/Enrichment

Special needs learners

 Guided practice: we always practice at least one problem together, then they try on their
own
 Checking for understanding: Ask the students to repeat the directions and question them
throughout the lesson

English Language Learners

 Groups: those students who understand English the least are placed with someone who
can translate for them when needed

Word problems
1. Find the value of two numbers if their sum is 12 and their difference is 4. (8,4)
2. The difference of two numbers is 3. Their sum is 13. Find the numbers. (8,5)

3. Brenda’s school is selling tickets to a spring musical. On the first day of ticket sales the
school sold 3 senior citizen tickets and 9 child tickets for a total of $75. The school took
in $67 on the second day by selling 8 senior citizen tickets and 5 child tickets. What is the
price each of one senior citizen ticket and one child ticket? (4,7)
4. Matt and Ming are selling fruit for a school fundraiser. Customers can buy small boxes of
oranges and large boxes of oranges. Matt sold 3 small boxes of oranges and 14 large
boxes of oranges for a total of $203. Ming sold 11 small boxes of oranges and 11 large
boxes of oranges for a total of $220. Find the cost each of one small box of oranges and
one large box of oranges. (7,13)

5. The school that Stefan goes to is selling tickets to a choral performance. On the first day
of ticket sales the school sold 3 senior citizen tickets and 1 child ticket for a total of $38.
The school took in $52 on the second day by selling 3 senior citizen tickets and 2 child
tickets. Find the price of a senior citizen ticket and the price of a child ticket. (8, 14)
