Information from Chairman’s Meeting held June 2, 2014
Harvey McLeod and A. Bjelkevik attended the meeting and reported the following:

Committees should have a State of the Art Workshop before a new Committee can be formed. In addition,
each Committee should have a workshop prior to finalization of their Bulletin.

The tailing Committee is having a workshop next year in Stavanger to present and discuss the new Bulletin.

Internal seepage Workshop - If the velocity of seepage is less than 1 cm per second.

CDA is having a workshop on tailings dam break analysis, Which Harvey mentioned. Dates are on the ICOLD
website (October 4/5)

There is a move for US Banking Institutions to not finance any dams higher than 50 m, which were discussed.

ICOLD dictionary on the website. We need to go through the dictionary to see if there are any tailing words
that need definition.

Question on Embankments and Tailings Dams in Stavanger. Harvey will be the Vice Chairmen of this

Question. Abstracts to be sent in in August and papers are due in October.) The Questions for the ICOLD
Congress in Norway 2015 include:
 Q96 – Innovations in dams, new use of dams, small dam re-use, etc.
 Q97 – Spillways
 Q98 – Embankments and tailing dams, high dams, innovations, erosion:
 Q99 – Raising existing dams, height limitations.
The members of the Tailings Committee should submit papers for Q98 – abstracts are due in All
August and papers are due in October 2014.

A tailings tour of the Titania Ilmenite Mine will be held. Annika also asked if Committee members would be
interested in visiting tailing dams in Sweden. It could involve at least three flights and probably five days.
Committee members to advise Annika if they may be interested.

Discussion of Items from Seattle Meeting
Register of Tailing Dams – each member country is to find out if their National Committee maintains a record of
5 tailing dams

Register of Tailings Dam Incidents and Failure: David Brett is to continue to pursue. The Committee members All
feel it is important, even if the record is not exhaustive or 100 % complete. To be reviewed in Norway
Current Work of the Committee
Mr. H. McLeod presented the status of the new Bulletin the changes and discussions that came out of the
“Working Meeting” on Monday. A revised working draft version of the Bulletin is attached to these minutes.

The name of the New Bulletin was changed to: Tailings Dam – Technology Update. The bulletin is intended for
engineers and should comprise new technologies and changes of trends. The Bulletin will also be of use as a
reference for Regulators, Mining Companies and Stakeholders
