1. State Standard(s):
● 1.MD.1- Order three objects by length; compare the lengths of two objects
indirectly by using a third object.
2. Teaching Model(s):
● Whole Group
● Direct Instruction
● Cooperative
● Independent
● Lemov Strategies:
○ Technique: VEGAS
3. Objective(s):
● Students will be able to use forms of non-standard measurement to measure various
objects.
● I can use objects to measure and compare the lengths.
● SmartBoard
● Elmo
● Pencils (17)
● Measure It! Worksheets (17)
● Measuring Tools/ Objects
5. Instructional Procedures:
a. Motivation/Engagement:
● TW CHAMP lesson to review learning and behavior expectations with students.
● TW Say:
● Conversation Level: “conversation level is a zero when the teacher is
talking”
● Help: “If you need help, please raise your hand and wait to be called on”
● Activity: “I can use objects to measure and compare the lengths. .”
● Movement: “Please sit criss-cross applesauce with your hands in your
laps”
● Participation: “Eyes are on the smartboard and/or teacher and you have
listening ears”
● Success: “If you do all of these things, you will have a successful class.”
1. Tell students to close their eyes and imagine that they are going on a trip. The trip they
are going on is to an island, so they are going to need a raft to get there. Have students
think about what size raft they would need for their trip. Ask them how they would build
it?
2. Have students open their eyes.
3. Ask students to share their ideas with their partner or group.
● Tell students that they are going to start their math lesson by listening to a story about
two friends who need to build a raft. Ask them to pay close attention to how they plan to
build it.
● Play Muggo's Raft. Technique: VEGAS
○ https://www.education.com/game/muggos-raft/
● Ask questions about why Muggo's raft was a different size than the one Chipmunk built.
● Show students your "raft" made of bulletin board paper.
● Model measuring the raft with your feet. Have students count along as you take each
step.
● Invite a few volunteers to measure the raft with their feet. Record their measurements on
the board.
● Ask students why all of the measurements are different. Ask students how they can
measure so that everyone gets the same answer.
● Tell students that using the same person's foot would definitely get everyone the same
answer. Let students know that using a ruler is another great option, but today the class
is going to focus on using non-standard
● Introduce the unit of non-standard measurement students will be using, these would be
manipulatives such as pencils, paper clips, crayons etc..
● Model how to measure an object explicitly showing how to put the measuring tools down
then moving one at a time while counting.
● Show them how to stop and move the measuring tool correctly.
● Walk around the room to show students where the MeasureIt! objects are located.
● Model using a measurement tool to measure and record answers on the recording
sheet.

d. Extension:
6. Accommodations, Modifications and Differentiations for Diverse Learners:
● Enrichment: Have students make predictions before measuring the actual size.
● Support: Pair struggling students to work with a partner
● If the students aren’t understanding the concept I will not send them to fill out their
organizers we will go over it again.
This lesson went very well. It was one of the easier standards to teach so I liked that I got to
start with it. The kids really enjoyed going around the room and measuring the objects.
Throughout the lesson I walked around and made sure I was watching them so I knew they
knew what they were doing. It was great because I got to see each student actually measure
something so it helped me see who needed more help. I have always preferred to do hands on
activities in math because I feel like it really helps the kids understand the concept.
