Panjshir (Persian: , literally

"Five Lions", also spelled as Panjsher) is
one of the thirty-four provinces of
Afghanistan, located in the northeastern
part of the country. The province is
divided into seven districts and contains
512 villages. As of 2018, the population of
Panjshir province is about 371,902.
Bazarak serves as the provincial capital. A
report says more than 700,000 people of
Panjshir province living outside of this
province, particularly located in Kabul
city of Afghanistan.
Panjshir became an independent province
from neighboring Parwan Province in
2004. It is surrounded by Baghlan and
Takhar in the north, Badakhshan and
Nuristan in the east, Laghman and Kapisa
in the south, and Parwan in the west.

ATLAS OF LAVRION MINERALS
-Lavrion (Lavreotiki) is one of the Earth's best "Laboratories" of Mineralogy. Its history is lost in Antiquity
and there are thousands of collectors and numerous Museums that have samples from Lavrion. New
minerals are being added to the known list of mineral species from Lavrion. The idea is to upload
beautiful images of Lavrion minerals to the site of IACLM in facebook,
https://www.facebook.com/groups/115645832341118/ ,and after gathering the so-called Lavrion
mineralogical species, we believe that it can be proposed to an International Publishing House, for
example. Elsevier, Springer-Verlag GmbH, etc. to fund and publish a monumental scientific work in
Mineralogy: The illustrated ATLAS OF LAVRION MINERALS which will surely become a best-seller
worldwide. This project will also include the names of all collectors, museums, educational institutes,
organizations etc. that will contribute with excellent quality photographs from their collection to the
site of the International Association of Collectors of Minerals of Lavrio. With this thinking you can
continue to upload mineral photos of Lavrion specimens with exact description and dimensions. So
everyone can follow the path of the first of the two projects we have announced. The dream will come
true if everyone helps.

The disastrous accident of Baia Mare

January 30, 2000. A date well-known in Romania, as it is connected in the memory of

the people to an incident that changed their lives forever. In Greece, only a few people
remember that on that day happened the worst accident in the history of mining.
The incident took place in Baia Mare, northern Romania, in the gold and silver mine
Aurul S.A. But what did exactly happen then? The winter of 2000 was one of the worst
winters in northern Romania. Heavy rainfall that lasted many days and particularly bad
and unpredictable weather conditions combined with inadequate construction design
led to the collapse of the dam that contained the cyanide solution from the gold
extraction. As a result, 100,000 m3 of liquid and 50-100 tonnes of cyanide and heavy
metals ended up in river Tisza and through it in river Danube, transferring in a flash
the problem to Hungary and Yugoslavia.
The consequences were disastrous for the area and the people. Because of the cyanide
almost all the fish died and phytoplankton and zooplankton were reduced. Because of
the heavy metals bioaccumulation was caused with chronic effects on the ecosystem as
well as soil contamination, to such an extent that the ground is still unsuitable for
agriculture.
According to the World Health Organization the life expectancy of the residents of Baia
Mare is now ten times shorter than the average in Romania. In fact, the levels of lead in
the blood of Baia Mare children are almost six times higher than the permitted limits, a
quantity that cannot be found in any other part of the earth!
Finally, the only positive thing that arose as a logical consequence of such a tragic
accident was the increase in security and environmental protection measures of the
mining industry, so that no other part of the planet goes through something similar.
