Short Question Answers

1. A body is moving along a circular path of radius “R”. What will be the distance and
displacement of the body when it completes half of a revolution?

When a body covers half revolution, it covers half of a circle. In half of a

circle total distance covered by a moving object equals to half of
circumference of the circle which is given by

We know that circumference C = 2πr

And half of the circumference
So the total distance covered in half revolution = πr

We know that displacement is shortest distance between two points “a”

and “b”. And this shortest distance is just a straight line joining point “a”
to “b” which is equals to r+r = 2r.

2. Under what condition can a body travel certain distance and yet its resultant
displacement is zero?

When a body moves in a circle then it certainly covers some ground, under
this condition body has covered some distance but displacement in this
case is zero because shortest distance between its
starting and ending point is zero.

(Here we can see body starting from point “a” and

getting back to “b”, once it gets here then it’s starting
and ending points are same, therefore, displacement is zero.)

3. Does a body moving with uniform velocity have acceleration? If your answer is yes,
what type of acceleration is this? 1

Yes a body moving with uniform velocity has acceleration. In uniform

velocity case, magnitude of velocity is constant but it does not necessarily

mean body is moving in a straight line. It might be moving in a circle with a

constant velocity and in this case, body has acceleration due to
continuously changing direction. This acceleration is called centripetal
acceleration.
4. What do you understand by non-uniform speed? Give two examples of such a
motion?

If a body covers unequal distance in equal intervals in time is called non-

uniform speed. For example, we go from home to school, a car traveling
through a busy road. In both the cases, our speed keeps changing. At time,
we are moving fast and then our speed slows down due to some reason.
This variation is called non-uniform speed.
5. Out of energy and acceleration, which one is vector and why?

Acceleration is a vector quantity because it requires both magnitude and

direction for its complete description whereas in energy, there is no need of
direction.
6. What is the direction of acceleration? Can the direction of velocity be different than
the direction of acceleration?

Direction of acceleration depends how the magnitude of velocity is

changing. If magnitude is increasing then we call it positive acceleration and
in this case acceleration and velocity has same direction. On the contrary, if
the magnitude of velocity is decreasing (negative acceleration) then
acceleration and velocity have opposite directions.
7. If velocity-time graph is a horizontal line parallel to time axis, what is the magnitude
of acceleration? What is the name of such a motion?

If velocity-time graph is a straight line, it means there is no change taking

place in velocity with respect to time. And if there is no change in velocity
then magnitude of acceleration is zero. Such kind of motion is called
constant velocity motion.
