Specification Clauses for the Use Of Crushed Glass Fine Aggregate
and Crushed Glass Filler Aggregate Where the option of crushed glass is to be included in the project specification (based on BS EN 206-1 and BS 8500), add the following clauses to the project specification:
Add to constituent material clauses:
General suitability is established for crushed glass fine aggregate conforming to Specification for crushed glass as a fine aggregate or filler aggregate for use in concrete1. Crushed glass fine aggregate may be used as part or all of the fine aggregate. General suitability as a filler aggregate or a type I addition is established for crushed glass filler aggregate conforming to Specification for crushed glass as a fine aggregate or filler aggregate for use in concrete. Crushed glass filler aggregate may be used to replace not more than 20% (m/m) of natural fine aggregate. NOTE 1. Guidance on the use of crushed glass fine aggregate and crushed glass filler aggregate are given in Guidance for the use of crushed or powdered glass in concrete1. NOTE 2. Provisions for the use of crushed glass filler aggregate with crushed glass fine aggregate are not provided.
Add to requirements for concrete clause
Crushed glass fine aggregate and filler aggregate shall be classified as highly reactive. The precautions given in BS 8500-2 for minimising damaging alkali-silica reaction in concrete containing highly reactive aggregate shall be applied. The alkali contribution of crushed glass aggregate to concrete shall be determined in accordance with BS 1881-124. NOTE the influence of the release of alkalis on the likelihood of harmful ASR in concrete from crushed glass aggregate is part of an ongoing testing programme. This approach to establishing the alkali contribution should be viewed as being tentative until the testing programme is complete. Crushed glass fine aggregate and filler aggregate shall be weigh-batched. NOTE Crushed glass typically displays a marked difference between bulk densities determined in the loose and compacted states in accordance with BS EN 1097-3. For this reason, batching by volume may lead to significant errors.
