Lesson Plan Title: Number line/skip count Lesson Plan Topic: Math
by 5’s

Date: 9/27/2018 Estimated Time: 60 Minutes

Grade Level: 1st School Site: Hummel ES

1. State Standard(s):
1.OA.6 Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within
10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (8+6=8+2+4=10+4=14); decomposing a
number leading to a ten (e.g., 13-4=13-3)

2. Teaching Model(s):
Direct Instruction
Whole group activity
Guided/Independent/Group Practice
Cooperative Learning
Independent practice

3. Objective(s):
SWBAT: skip count by 5’s, to 20
SWBAT: add and subtract within 20, using a number line

4. Materials and Technology Resources

● Masking Tape
● 2 contrasting colored markers
● Skip count by 5’s apple worksheet
● Pencils, glue and scissors for students

5. Instructional Procedures:
a. Motivation/Engagement: (5 Minutes)
● Teacher will have a pre made number line assembled in the hallway or pod, number line
will not have numbers on it yet, just tick marks where zero, 10 and 20 will go
● Teacher will invite students to come sit around or in front of the number line. Once all
students are seated, the teacher will ask out loud if any students know what this tape
represents.
● Next, teacher will guide the class in telling him or her what numbers should be written on
the pre drawn tick marks (0, 10, 20) teacher will elicit background knowledge by asking
students to think back to ST Math, their ruler, number line on their desks, etc.
● Teacher will then ask students to imagine what number will come in between 0 and 10,
and what will come between 10 and 20
● All numbers thus far will be written in one certain color
● Teacher will proceed to fill in the rest of the number line in the opposing color (1-20)

Blooms Question Addressed (Apply) How would you fill in the blanks of this number
line? What numbers would you use?

b .Developmental Activities or Learning Experiences: (35 minutes)

● Teacher will ask students to think pair share, and discuss with their partner why some
numbers are different colored, whats the pattern?
NEPF Standard 3: How will students engage in interactive dialogue and/or
discussions to enhance their learning?
● Teacher will ask students various questions to elicit background knowledge about skip
counting by 5’s, adding and subtracting in groups of 5, etc. Some examples may include
“Make a guess in your head of what will happen if we take 5 away from 10” Then chose
a student to come hop from 10, to 5 to check their answer.
● Blooms Question Addressed (analyze) Why do you think will happen if we take
away or add 5 to this number?
● Continue demonstrating like this as time allows LEMOV: Stretch it
● Students will then work on skip counting by 5’s apple worksheet independently at their
desks

(c. Closure: (5 minutes)

Teacher will ask students to skip count from 0-100 out loud, whole group.

d. Extension: Students will skip count by 2, and 10 in the coming weeks, as their
knowledge progresses

6. Accommodations, Modifications and Differentiations for Diverse Learners:

● ELL student will be given a problem that she knows how to do, to skip count on the
number line. This will build confidence in the classroom setting
● ELL student will have instructions read to her one on one using google translate
● Students who struggle to pay attention will receive explicit instruction during
independent work and/or be paired with a “high flyer”

7. Assessment and Evaluation of Learning:

a. Formative: No formal formative assessment. TW observe students as they work and
observe their knowledge of the subject during the lesson to gauge appropriate instruction
b. Summative: no summative this week

NEPF Standard 5: How will students progress be assessed?

8. Homework Assignment: subtraction fluency fact sheet will be sent home for homework.
(subtraction within 20)

9. Reflection:
a. Strengths: The students absolutely loved the interactive aspect of the giant number line,
and I loved teaching this way. All of my students were engaged and wanted to
participate, so they were on their best behavior. I really felt like I enforced the concept
effectively and used great questioning strategies, I was proud of myself for this one!
b. Concerns: There were a few students who could skip count by 5’s when using the number
line, or when counting out loud, but had a lot of difficulty with the worksheet. I’d like to
work more with my class about what skip counting by 5’s really is, aside from them just
using rote memorization. This lesson was a good start, but I’d like to keep enforcing this
concept.
c. Insights: The interactivity of this lesson was so fun for both me and my students. I love
breaking the cycle of the day with fun and interactive learning. I’d like to try to do 2 or 3
things like this per week if time allows. I find that sometimes, straying from our routine
can cause chaos, but this lesson went smoothly. I’m still working on that delicate balance.
