1. State Standard(s):
1.OA.6 Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within
10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (8+6=8+2+4=10+4=14); decomposing a
number leading to a ten (e.g., 13-4=13-3)
2. Teaching Model(s):
Direct Instruction
Whole group activity
Guided/Independent/Group Practice
Cooperative Learning
Independent practice
3. Objective(s):
SWBAT: skip count by 5’s, to 20
SWBAT: add and subtract within 20, using a number line
5. Instructional Procedures:
a. Motivation/Engagement: (5 Minutes)
● Teacher will have a pre made number line assembled in the hallway or pod, number line
will not have numbers on it yet, just tick marks where zero, 10 and 20 will go
● Teacher will invite students to come sit around or in front of the number line. Once all
students are seated, the teacher will ask out loud if any students know what this tape
represents.
● Next, teacher will guide the class in telling him or her what numbers should be written on
the pre drawn tick marks (0, 10, 20) teacher will elicit background knowledge by asking
students to think back to ST Math, their ruler, number line on their desks, etc.
● Teacher will then ask students to imagine what number will come in between 0 and 10,
and what will come between 10 and 20
● All numbers thus far will be written in one certain color
● Teacher will proceed to fill in the rest of the number line in the opposing color (1-20)
Blooms Question Addressed (Apply) How would you fill in the blanks of this number
line? What numbers would you use?
Teacher will ask students to skip count from 0-100 out loud, whole group.
d. Extension: Students will skip count by 2, and 10 in the coming weeks, as their
knowledge progresses
8. Homework Assignment: subtraction fluency fact sheet will be sent home for homework.
(subtraction within 20)
9. Reflection:
a. Strengths: The students absolutely loved the interactive aspect of the giant number line,
and I loved teaching this way. All of my students were engaged and wanted to
participate, so they were on their best behavior. I really felt like I enforced the concept
effectively and used great questioning strategies, I was proud of myself for this one!
b. Concerns: There were a few students who could skip count by 5’s when using the number
line, or when counting out loud, but had a lot of difficulty with the worksheet. I’d like to
work more with my class about what skip counting by 5’s really is, aside from them just
using rote memorization. This lesson was a good start, but I’d like to keep enforcing this
concept.
c. Insights: The interactivity of this lesson was so fun for both me and my students. I love
breaking the cycle of the day with fun and interactive learning. I’d like to try to do 2 or 3
things like this per week if time allows. I find that sometimes, straying from our routine
can cause chaos, but this lesson went smoothly. I’m still working on that delicate balance.
