Pardo De Tavera
T.H. Pardo de Tavera was a Filipino scholar, scientist,

and a Historical researcher. Born to the name of Trinidad

Hermenegildo Pardo de Tavera y Gorricho on April 13, 1857

to his Spanish parents. His father Felix Pardo de Tavera, a

lawyer and his mother Juliana Gorricho who came from a very

wealthy family. After his father died, his uncle Joaquin chose

to be his acting father, a law professor and a government

official. Joaquin Pardo de Tavera was a known reformist during the time of the Spanish era in the

Philippines.

Triniad was in the middle of his college years when his uncle, Joaquin invited him to

study in Paris and live there. This invitation was given to Trinidad after his uncle was deported to

Guam and was then pardoned which gave Joaquin a chance to move to Paris.

After finishing medicine at the University of Paris, it was also the time he took interests

in knowing more about the Philippines by researching and writing journals about the asian

culture and medicine. One of his famous books is the Plantas de Medicinales de Filipinas which

is a study about the Philippine medicinal plants. He was also the person behind La Democracia,

a newspaper who first recognized the sovereignty of United States to the Philippines. Trinidad

also became the director of the National Library and Museum of the Philippines. He died on

March 26, 1925 at the age of 67 and his remains was rested in Paris, France.
Onofre D. Corpuz
Onofre Dizon Corpuz was a Filipino academic,

historian, national scientist, and an economist. He was born on

December 1, 1926 on Camiling, Tarlac to his Filipino parents

Remigio Corpuz and Isabel Dizon. He finished his primary and

secondary education in Tarlac and his Bachelor of Arts Degree

at the University of the Philippines Diliman. He also studied

abroad for his masters degree at the University of Illinois and at Harvard University for his

Masters of Political Administration degree and his doctorate degree for Political Economy and

Government. He worked as a Political Science professor at the University of the Philippines

school of Economics. He married Dr. Aurora Corpuz who was the Dean of Economics in UP.

His political career started at the year of 1966 when he was appointed by the former

president Ferdinand E. Marcos as the Undersecretary of Education and later on promoted to

Secretary. He also became the Minister of Education when he became a member of the National

Assembly of the Philippines’ legislative department. He also founded the Development Academy

of the Philippines, which is a research and training institution. On the year of 1975-1979 he

became the 13th president of the University of the Philippines which he did a promising works

during his term which include the establishment of UP Manila and Visayas units, National

Engineering Center, UP Extension Program at San Fernando, Asian Institute of Tourism, World

Studies Center, Creative Writing Center, and National Center for Transportation Studies.
Onofre was really active during his time, he even got the chance to publish books related

about the Philippines’ history and economics. Two of his famous works are the Roots of the

Filipno Nation and The Economic History of the Philippines.He died last March 23, 2013 at the

age of 87.
