Title : “Why Tea?”

Topic : Beverage : Tea

General Purpose : To persuade

Specific Detail : To persuade my audience that drinking tea can bring a lot of
benefits to our lives instead of drinking coffee.

Central Idea : Drinking coffee can contribute to various health problems that can
be overcome effectively by drinking tea.

Main points : I. The first point is about the effects of drinking coffee on
human health.

II. The second point is about the goodness of drinking tea on

an individual who take it regularly.

Introduction

I. First of all, let me ask you a question. If I give you a cup of Starbuck coffee and a cup of
Lipton tea, which one do you prefer?
II. Both coffee and tea are the famous beverages in our country as well as in worldwide.
A. Coffee is one of the most widely consumed drinks all over the world.
B. It is a stimulant and helps in getting over the feeling of tiredness and fatigue. All this
could lead to coffee drinking habit which could be difficult to leave with time.
III. It is quite rare to hear no coffee for a day. Majority of people nowadays take coffee in almost
their meals.
A. But, does coffee really bring good effects to our health?
IV. I have an experience regarding the effects of drinking coffee while I was staying in my
uncle’s house for several months for reason of study. From my observations while I was
along with him, I realized that he totally loved to drink coffee. Every day, he would have 4
cups of coffee in his meals. Then, when we went out for vacation and had a break at
elsewhere, he often requested the waiter to bring him a cup of coffee. He was coffee maniac,
indeed!
V. Last two years, he was admitted to hospital due to heart disease.
A. The doctor said it was caused of the large intake of caffeine. Plus, he also suffered
from constipation and always cried for the pain during the process of removing
bowel. I sympathize with his condition.
B. Since that time, I started doing research of the effects of drinking coffee and tried to
find an alternative way for people who really love to drink this kind of beverage.

(Transition: So, that is an introduction from me regarding to the topic. Now, let me start
delivering my speech.)
(Internal Preview: There are several effects of drinking coffee on human health as well as some
goodness of drinking tea.)

Body

I. The first point is about the effects of drinking coffee on human health.
A. Actually, coffee has a harmful substance which is caffeine.
1. Caffeine is profoundly found in many plant species such as in the beans,
leaves, and fruit of some plants. It also can be found profoundly in varying
quantities where it acts as a natural pesticide that paralyzes and kills certain
insects feeding on the plants.
2. Caffeine is a bitter, white crystalline xanthine alkaloid (organic compound)
that acts as a psychoactive stimulant drug and a mild diuretic which is a
substance that tends to increase the flow of urine and causes the body to
get rid of excess water.

B. Drinking coffee contributes to have heart disease.
1. According to a study conducted at Stanford University, sedentary men in
between 30 and 55 consuming more then 3 cups of coffee a day could be at a
higher risk of developing heart disease then people who consume less.
2. According to another study conducted on 100,000 people by Dr Klatsky, a
former instructor in Surgery, Columbia University College of Physicians and
Surgeons from 1966 to 1968, claims that 4 or more cups of coffee a day could
boost chances of heart disease by 30% in men and a whopping 60% in
women.

C. Besides that, people who often drink coffee tend to get constipation.
1. Referring to Wordweb, constipation means irregular and infrequent or difficult
evacuation of the bowels; it can be a symptom of intestinal obstruction or
diverticulitis.
2. According to a study conducted at University of North Carolina, people who
are constipated often drink more coffee.
3. As I have said just now about caffeine, it also acts as a diuretic which disturbs
the body fluid balance by drawing fluid out of the gut where they are required
to soften the stool. This makes stool hard and difficult to expel completely.
4. Even worst, blood will also come out from the anus during the process of
removing bowel takes place.

(Transition: Now, let me explain bout the goodness of drinking tea in our lives.)

II. The last point is about the goodness of drinking tea in our lives.

A. Chiefly, teas contain large amount of antioxidants which are substances that inhibit
oxidation or inhibit reactions promoted by oxygen or peroxides that may result
wrinkles on your skin.

1. In other word, antioxidants can help slow down aging and help your cells to
regenerate and repair especially cells in our skin so that your skin will be
safely preserved by these substances. As a result, you will always look
younger even though you are old for your ages.

2. In addition, teas of all varieties also contain high levels of antioxidant

polyphenols that can help keep your body healthier and some studies suggest
even ward of some cancers.

B. Drinking tea can keep your body hydrated.

1. The existence of antioxidants in the tea can regulate the movement of body
fluid effectively.
2. Tea is a good remedy when you get diarrhea.

3. You will mot experience dehydrated when you drink tea.

C. To be frank, tea has less caffeine than coffee.

1. It is inevitable to say that tea has no caffeine at all; actually, it has.

2. However, the amount of caffeine in tea is lower than the amount of caffeine in
coffee.

D. Tea may reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke.

1. Tea helps to prevent the formation of dangerous blood clots which are very
often the cause of heart attacks and strokes. Some studies have even found
that black tea drinkers were at a 70 percent lower risk of having a fatal heart
attack.

E. Tea helps protect your smile.

1. While the stereotype of the tea-drinking Brits with horrible teeth may make
you think otherwise, tea actually contains fluoride and tannins, both of which
help reduce plaque buildup and tooth decay.

2. Combined with a good dental hygiene regimen, this could keep your teeth
healthier for longer. You don’t have to go to nursing school to understand the
benefits of a beautiful smile!

drinking-tea/)

(Internal Summary: So far, we have learned some severities of drinking coffee as well as
some )
(Transition: Then, that is all about my speech. I hope all information that I have given to
you just now is clearly explained.)
Conclusion

I. As what I have told just now, there are many bad effects of drinking coffee on our health.

II. Let’s switch our bad habits of drinking coffee to drinking tea more frequent. Hopefully, you
will live happily and healthily.

III. “A cup of coffee per day takes you health away but, a cup of tea per day you can take
diseases away.”
