Monday August 13th

1. Turn in APA media center assignment (1, 2, 3)

2. Socratic Seminar (30 minutes)

3. Assignment APA Peer review: (15 minutes) peer review and revision.

4. Continuing STEP 1 of Selecting a Topic: Developing research query and refining research topic
statement:

Complete the questions provided below (Exercise 1.5 and 1.6). By the end of this assignment today, you
should have a more refined research topic statement with key terms i.e. this will serve as your
preliminary topic of study for the time being.

5. Ticket out of the door: Complete Research Survey before you leave class, no later than 3:24 pm

Tomorrow: We will start to read and dissect the references you choose to use in your APA topic search.

The Literature Review: Six Steps to Success

STEP 1: Select a topic (Continuation)
Exercise 1.5: Developing your Research Query Statement
1. What is your specific personal interest?
a. The interest, issue, or concern of my research is:

How can one best increase efficiency in engines through use of boost? Boost is described as
being an increase in the pressure of the air forced into automotive cylinder engines, leading to
an increase in efficiency of the combustion and an increase in power output. Boost can be
created from turbochargers and superchargers in engines. Turbochargers create boost pressure
by using an exhaust gas driven air compressor, while superchargers create it with a crankshaft
driven air compressor. Turbochargers suffer from a lag in response because of the latency
caused by having to wait for exhaust gases to move, but reduce engine resistance, and
superchargers are the opposite in that they do not suffer from a considerable amount of lag, but
they reduce the efficiency in comparison. Currently, turbochargers are more popular for
efficiency and performance, but superchargers still see some use in performance vehicles. While
these are currently used almost exclusively separately, a combination of the two could lead to a
compromise in technology and create a better option than either separately.

(Answer in seven sentences)

b. Copy and paste (a) in the space below. Now, cross out the two least important
sentences without changing the key idea.

d. Copy and paste (c) into the box below. Reduce your remaining draft to three
sentences. Be sure your final three sentences identify the subject (what you are
studying), the perspective (how you are looking at it), and the vantage point (which
academic field you are using)

2. Analyze your 3 sentences from 1d. What contributions to the field make this research
important?

With petroleum reserves depleting, an increase in engine efficiency would reduce the amount of
gasoline.

3. What are your beliefs, values, biases and opinions about this interest?
a. How will these beliefs, values, biases, and opinions help you in conducting your
research?
This is not an opinionated topic, no impact
b. How will you prevent the beliefs and biases contained in your personal
viewpoint from affecting the necessary neutral stance of a researcher?
This is not an opinionated concept, no impact

Exercise 1.6: Refining your research topic statement

1. Define the key terms of the interest statement
a. Using the key terms found in your interest statement, find the technical definitions of
your key terms. Start compiling a list of key terms and definitions.
b. Rewrite the interest statement using the technical terms of that academic field
c. Review the reframed statement. Does it still express your intended interest? If it does
not, rework and revise the study’s focus and vantage point or search the reference works
further for other terminology to use until the reframed statement expresses your research
interest.
d. Rewrite the interest statement as the preliminary topic of your study.
