Does 5G Mobile Technology Represent the Future of VoIP?

VoIP wireless technology is the next opportunity for the future. If you can already use your phones in
total mobility with the 4G and 4G + networks, the advent of 5G promises an obvious technological
leap. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is the present and the future of communications. Many
companies are already taking advantage of the benefits of VoIP SIP technologies, not only to save
money, but also to access the world of unified communications services. Therefore, what is defined
is the convergence of voice and data networks. Basically, a phone call is no longer a separate servic e
but an integral part of the data network. According to many observers, the next step seems to bring
the advantages of such a model.

For those who already work with a VoIP PBX in the cloud, it is already clear how calls can be easily
managed on the move. However, the relative availability of mobile data bandwidth in rural areas
remains an important limitation. Therefore, it is reasonable to ask whether the systematic use of
wireless VoIP connectivity is really a technology that can be adopted systematically.

Current limitations of 3G and 4G

The main restriction is represented by the latency and jitter present in the mobile data lines. Thes e
factors often negatively affect the quality of the call by introducing noise in the audio band. The
phenomenon is much more evident in suburban areas and in areas with little coverage. Mobile
technologies (2G, 3G, 4G) have focused mainly on increasing coverage, increasing the bandwidth of
available data and reducing latency. The objective has always been to improve communication "from
person to person".

The opportunity for wireless VoIP with 5G

The goal with the arrival of the new generation of 5G mobile technology is to extend people's
communication to things. Personal communication, in fact, we add an audience of billions of objects
called the Internet of Things (IoT), designed to interconnect the world in a more efficient way.
Therefore, the real revolution will not be the only increase in bandwidth and coverage, but in the
substantial differentiation of bandwidth, latency, capacity and transport reliability according to the
application scenario. The different types of services and their heterogeneity require a new technology
that can optimize resources according to the application used. It is no longer an update of radio
devices, but the possibility of dynamically reallocating resources and optimizing existi ng LTE and LTE
+ technologies. With this in mind, it will be necessary to completely redesign the way in which data is
processed and transported. So, here we talk about "Control and Service Layer", which will lead to the
maturity of the concepts of SDN (Software Defined Network) and NFV (Network Functions
Virtualization). This makes the 5G the first native NFV / SDN technology. All this also explains why
we talk about "Evolution in the radio" and "Revolution in the nucleus". In addition, 5G is a technology
whose genesis goes hand in hand with the development of the fiber optic network, since fixed and
mobile solutions are destined in the future to an increasingly greater integration in benefit of the new
services.

In summary, here are the main features of 5G:

• Bit rate 10 times greater than 4G, with peaks up to 10 Gbps

• Important reduction of latency and jitter
• A "virtual" native technology
• Energy savings for transmission equipment and mobile devices

The combination of these factors makes it possible to enable new business scenarios, such as those
related to innovation in public safety, intelligent mobility, the automotive industry with cars that drive
themselves and entertainment with a massive use of 3D and augmented reality.
VoIP with 5G network s

How does VoIP fit in this context?. VoIP requires the transmission of data in real time without distortion
due to transport. Therefore, a very low minimum dedicated band, very low latency, absence or
presence of very low fluctuation is required. It is quite obvious to ask if these VoIP prerogatives will
be fulfilled. The doubt is legal since the massive use of VoIP would be placed in direct competition
with the traditional flows of mobile telephony. However, we have opened the article that recalls how,
in the world of wired data networks, telephone calls are no longer a dedicated and separate servic e
of data transmissions. The distinction is maintained only at the marketing level and billing account.
Therefore, if telephony and data converge on the same IP transport channel, it is reasonable to expect
the same thing to happen gradually on the mobile telephony front.

Are we talking about the future or a utopia?. The answer to this question is very simple: technically,
everything described would be feasible in the very near future. The technologies are mature and there
are no substantial limitations from this point of view. It is only necessary to wait for the implementation
and diffusion of the new services, but above all the commercial options of the operators and the
investment in the infrastructure.
