Languages and Science (PRIMALS) for Junior High School Teachers

Narative Report

Date: November 7 – 11, 2018

November 7, 2018

Early in the morning, delegates from different division arrive in Ann Raquels Resort except
the delegates from the Division of Aurora who arrived earlier. Every body was busy, excited with
the new learnings that will incalcute during the training. The registrations starts at 7:45 in the
morning. At exactly 8:00 in the morning, the opening program starts. All of the tables where name
depending on what is the division being presented. There are more than 600 participants in
different divisions with the specialization in Mathematics, Languages (English and Filipino) and
Science. During the orientation the facilatators where introduced and the location of the specific
areas, where they will stay. For Mathematics, we are ask to stay at Hall C and Coffee Shop. One
group is compose of 68 members and the other was 66 members. Each class was divided to
different groups.
In the afternoon, the sessions starts with the Unpacking the Mathematics Curriculum
presented by Ms. Ana Rosana Victoria. As of this moment, we stayed at the Pavilion. The first
activity is all about how to cook Kare kare. Differents groups presented the way of cooking it.
There are some who presented it just like in the first class restaurant, some presented it just like
“lutong bahay” or the native way. Here in this session, we learn the importance of unpacking the
stardards and the competencies and the different techniques in unpacking the learning stardards
and competencies.
The session 2 is all about Identifying Learning Progression facilitated by Mr. Dan Caysido.
Here, we focus on the difference between a content progression and a learning progression. We
also learn the know-understand-do (KUD). We work with our groupmates on how to unpacked the
assigned unit. As I remember the unit that was assigned is the curriculum of grade 7, third quarter
(geometry). Each team submitted an activity sheet entitled Learning Progression and Learning
Targets where we wrote the KUD Learning Progression of the competencies assigned to us and
the Corresponding Learning Targets.
Session 3, Say what? Teaaching Mathematics to English Language Learners facilitated by
Ms. Lady Anne R. Bayan. Here, the focus on the understanding of the dual challenges of learning
the English Language and the language of Mathematics. We are able to identify the factors howthe
language affect the students in understanding Mathematics. After the session, there are
recommendation and strategies on what are the things that can be done to fix the issue.

The following day, we already stayed with our specific classes. Now, the class A stayed at
Hall C while Class B stayed at the coffee shop. Each class was divided to different groups. In class
A, we have Lilac, Green, Neon Pink, Light Blue and Dark Blue. Each group is composed of
different division. Some of the groups consist of 13 to 14 members.
The session starts at exactly 8 in the morning with the MOL of the assigned teachers. The
session 4 is all about the Say What? Interpreting and Solving Word Problems presented by Ms.
Ana Rosana Victoria. Here, we determine wether the students errors are due to a lack of
profficiency in English, a lack of compentency in Mathematics or both. However in the end, we
found out that both has factors why students are having difficulty in the world of Mathematics.
We also answered word problems. One of the problem is the census taker wherein at the end the
members of the group debate for the answer. However, none of the five grouops was able to answer
the question. There are strategies in problem solving was introduced. Some of them is looking the
pattern, construct a table, make an organized list and so on and so fort. After the session an activity
sheet was submitted for output.
The session 5 is about How Children Learn Math presented by Ms. Mylyn Bolima. Here
the fcus is about the number sense, recognizing small group of objects in counting. Blooms
Taxonomy is a little bit discusssed. The activity sheet is about the convergent and divergent.
Session 6, is the Adolescent Brain and Mathematics. We’re able to identify the parts and
the functions of the brain. They also discussed how the brain develops. The capabilities and the
limitations of the brain from the pre – school to adolescent. We found out the best way of handing
students specially we are handling delicates ages, the adolescent age. Coopereative Learning is
one of the best way in the teaching strategy taht can we used. We remember PIES, mwhere P –
Porsitive Interdependence, I – Individual Participation, E – Equal Participation and S –
Simultaneous Interaction.
In the afternoon, the MOL was conducted by the Dark Blue Team. They prepared an
energizer to energize the participants. Session 7 is all about Who ate More? Representing Fractions
as Equal of as a Whole by Ms. Angelita S. Labonete. It is focus on moving on the conceptual
aspect of fractions rather procedural. The activity are about the Fraction Concentration – use of
Fraction Bars, Think of a Card Game about Fractions and Damath.
Session 8 is about Out of a Hundred: Relating Fractions, Decimals, and Percents by Ms.
Angelita S. Labonete. The focus is all about the fractions, decimals and percentage. The percent
should be identified as equal as fractions and decimals. We also ahve activities like puxxles wher
we pattern block start. Alwasy remember that it is important to apply the content of Mathematics
in a real life situation because students of the 21st century is about the development of the skills
of the students for life lone learning.
Session 9 is Being Positive (Or Negative) Operations on Integers by Ms. Alrene C.
Raguine. Theh focus id to use different models to explore integers and the operations on integers.
We used the integer tiles as a concrete models in addition and subtraction. However, we found out
there are some limiitation of these models. So, we come up that, the teacher should be prepared
with what might arise during the performance task of the students. Cooperative learning was also
used in this session.

November 9, 2018

After the breakfast, the Light Blue Team facilitated the MOL of the day. They prepared a
nationalistic song, prayer and thought of the day. Session 10 is about Space Exporation 1:
Understanding Perimeter, Circumference and Area Through Art. It was presented by Ms. Noime
Villaverde. The fist activity starts with the Broken Mirrors. It was presented through storytelling.
The title of of the story is The Grandfathers Tang. Most of us already know how to use the
Tangrams. It is composed of seven shapes. However, the facilator didn’t told the story of
Tangrams, but in the end the quotation that “Anything is broken cant be fix by simply putting them
together.” After the session, the participants was able to understand the meaningful instrucion that
are built upon what students know, understand and do as a result of their interaction with the
environment. We are able to differentiate and see relaionships among shapes based on ther
attributes. Adopt formative strategies in assessing the mathematical thinking skills of the learners.
Space Exploration 2 is about Understaning Surface Area and Volume Through Art
facilitated by Ms. Noime Villaverde. We’re able to explore the concept of the positive exponents.
Using tyhe different models to explore exponents and polynomials. In developing the vocabulary,
related polynomials using cooperative learning strategies to increase student involvement ,
achievement and accountability. The volume was discussed using the transparent geometric
figures.
Session 12, keeping the Balance: Understanding Expressions and Equations discussed by
Mr. Dan Caysido. The first activity is about the origin of algebra. It was discussed in the story
where algebra originated and who are the father of algebra. It also give emphasis on the meaning
of the four basic operations in terms of action. Another activity was the flag chart, and individually,
we submitted an output on our own way, example of using the flag chart, the possibilities and the
impossible to solve.
In the afternoon before the session starts. The Neon Pink facilitated the MOL. They
prepared a simple Zumba dance for the energizer. In spite of some hindrances, difficulties and
problems, the participants managed to lift up and enjoy the next sessions. The session 13 is about
the Power of Shapes: Understanding Exponents and Polynomials facilitated by Ms. Mylyn Bolima.
Here we explore the exponents and the polynomials, using the different models to explore the
exponents and the polynomials. Developing the expertise of the students with polynomials and
exponents.
Session 14, Building Products: Multiplying and Factoring Polynomials facilitated by Ms.
Ana Rosana Victoria. We’re able to visualize multiplication and factoring of polynomials using
concrete models. We’re able to apply the concrete, representation and symbolic level experiences
in learning multiplication and factoring polynomials. We gain use cooperative learning strategies
to increase students’ involvement, achievement and accountability.
Session 15 is about What Comes Next? Understanding Patterns and Functions by Ms. Lady
Anne R. Bayan. The session starts with the activity REBUS PUZZLES. Everybody was excited
with the competition. Everybody was eager to win the competition. In this session, we’re able to
investigate numerical and geometric patterns. Were to describe them verbally and express them
symbolically in several ways. How to use them in making predictions and generalizations. We’re
able to demonstrate our understanding that the essence of knowledge is structures and relationships
of the components. Other activities that we had during this session were done by practice by doing
process.

November 10, 2018

The day started at the modes of learning (MOL) sponsored by the Green group. They began
with the nationalistic song, “Ako ay Pilipino” and followed by the prayer song, “We are the
Reason”. They conducted an energizer which boost the mood by just sitting on a chair. They also
recapped yesterday’s activity.
After the MOL, the class started with the session proper with Ms. Airene C. Raguine of
SDO Zambales, with the topic Of Frogs and Cubes: Understanding Quadratic Functions as our
session 16. She employed different advanced kinds of activities, which boost the energy of the
class about Quadratic Functions. Specially, she facilitated the matchstick, which enhanced the
ideas and skills in the quadratic Equations. Followed by the circular regions and pizza activity. At
the end, we the participants able to investigate the properties of linear functions and quadratic
functions. Use the technology to accurately identify the key components of the graph of the
quadratic functions. We also able to demonstrate understanding that the essence of knowledge and
relationship of the components is structure.
It is a working break. We proceed with the next session 17, entitled, Too Many Triangles:
Understanding Trigonometric Functions. She asked the participants to remember one of the basic
formulas of right triangle, SOHCAHTOA. She also posted out the CRA or Concrete –
Representation – Abstract ideas and skills. At the end of the lessons, we’re able to explore the
basic concepts on trigonometry using storytelling. It only shows that Mathematics can be
integrated as well in English or any subject area. We’re able to analyze situations, check for
limitations, and examine appropriate methods of solutions using trigonometry. We practice
manipulating trigonometric functions and expressions. With the use of trigonometric, we found
out the relationships in determining the lengths and angle measures.
Session 18 was facilitated by Ms. Noime Villaverde and the topic is about Using
Technology to Learn, and Practice Math Skills. During this time, we study some applications that
we could use in graphing and solving equations where it will show you the solutions and the graph
of the equation. There are also site being cited that we could visit for references. Unfortunately,
there is no Ethernet access, we’re unable to try the sites but we will try them for sure at home.
The afternoon session started with MOL sponsored by Lilac Group. They began with an
energizer entitled “Kiss Me Kiss Me”, followed by roll call and recap. The afternoon session was
facilitated by Mr. Dan Caysido of SDO Bataan in which he focused on Making Sense of Data:
Organizing Data with Technology. He facilitated the use of Microsoft Excel in the process of
collecting, analyzing and interpreting data. He used the activity about the waistline and heights of
the participants. Every group shared their ways on how they solve the activity using Microsoft
excel.
The last session of the program was conducted by Ms. Anne R. Bayan which was about
“What’s in the Center? Understanding Measures of Central Tendency.” She used several activities
with which strengthened the ideas about the measures of central tendency. She had the participants
engaged in the activities in which had impressions of good techniques in measures of central
tendency.
After the break, the participants were asked to do the preparation of the LAC Plan (By
Division.) Some of the division prepared a three days matrix while the others are five. Since today
is Sunday, we are encourage to join the mass held at the Pavilion.
