Answer ALL Questions.

1. Given the following linear system of equations:

x + y + kz = 2
3x + 4y + 2z = k
2x + 3y – z = 1

By reducing the augmented matrix representing the above equation to REF, determine the
value (or values) of k so that the linear system has:
i) a unique solution
ii) an infinite solution, and
iii) no solution [7]

2. Given T = {( x, y, z ) : x, y, z ∈ \} with the operations

( x, y, z ) ⊕ ( x ', y ', z ') = ( x + x ', y, z + z ')
and
k : ( x, y, z ) = ( kx, ky , kz )
is not a vector space. List three properties of the definition of a vector space that fail to
hold. [6]
