Internship Proposal

Deidre Koziak
Loyola University Maryland

Rationale
For my educational technology internship, I would like to incorporate 3D printing into
Makerspace lessons at my school, Norwood Elementary, in Dundalk, MD. We are very
fortunate to have a variety of technology tools at Norwood. As a school, we are constantly
looking to incorporate innovative learning into our classrooms. Being that the 3D printer is a new
addition to the school, I plan to take a leadership role in how to implement 3D printing into our
curriculum. Our students at Norwood have had much exposure to our Makerspace but have
lacked opportunities to take their Makerspace lessons to newer heights. We have limited our
students to using our Makerspace materials for baseline project-based learning. Through this
internship, I hope to become a leader and support system for Norwood teachers who are willing
to take the risk of implementing 3D printing into Makerspace lessons. Through progressive
monthly meetings, selected participants will be given information on how to navigate the 3D
printer and receive information on best practices when implementing project-based learning in
their specific grade level. By working collaboratively with the tech team and participants of this
internship, I hope to establish a higher level of problem solving and critical thinking skills within
our students at Norwood Elementary.
Participants
Participants in this internship include myself, the tech team, and teachers and students grades K-
3 at Norwood Elementary. Our tech team consists of myself and our two tech liaisons at the
school. 3D printing is new to most of the school, so I focused on gathering one teacher from each
grade level to participate in the internship. MJ is entering her 6th year teaching Kindergarten at
Norwood Elementary. She is one of our school’s tech liaison’s and is also a member of Loyola’s
Digital Leadership graduate program. AJ is a first-grade teacher at Norwood Elementary, who
has no experience with 3D printing. KK is in her second year at Norwood teaching second grade
with no 3D printing experience. NA is our art teacher at Norwood who also runs the after-school
Business and Engineering club. She has some experience with 3D printing through projects she
has completed with her club members. AF is a third-grade teacher at Norwood. He played a
leadership role in introducing the Makerspace to our faculty and staff when it first entered our
school. The students of each of these teachers will be responsible for using 3D printing to
collaborate and find solutions to real-world problems.
Learning Objectives
The learning objectives for my internship are designed around the ISTE teacher standards which
include inspiring student learning and creativity, designing and developing digital age learning
experiences and assessments, and modeling digital age work and learning. Knowing that my
participants are at the substitution level of the SAMR model helps me to plan effective learning
experiences that they can transfer to their students. As a technology leader I hope to guide my
participants in creating engaging and innovative thinking opportunities for their students. I plan
to facilitate collaborative learning sessions where my teachers are able to design, develop, and
reflect on the learning experiences with their students. Our Tech Tuesdays will be used to
communicate information and ideas of best practices with 3D printing.
The learning objectives for the students at Norwood Elementary include collaboration and
problem solving in project-based learning. I want students at each grade level to use the 3D
printer as a tool for solving real world problems. They will need to identify the problem,
collaborate and agree on different solutions, and troubleshoot as problems arise while creating
their final product. The students will use the engineering design process throughout their 3D
printing learning experience. The 3D printer will become a high-tech, innovative tool that gives
our students the opportunity to use problem solving and critical thinking skills in real world
applications.
Change
As I think about the future at Norwood, I am confident that we are continuing to head down an
innovative path. From when I started teaching there 5 years ago, there have already been so
many technological changes made to our daily routines. All teachers at Norwood incorporate
devices and Promethean Boards into daily instruction. As new technological advances arise, our
administration is very supportive in us trying them with our students. I feel that Norwood is
currently at a standstill with innovation. We consistently share new educational websites or
software’s to try, but I want to take Norwood beyond surface level innovation. Students at
Norwood have opportunities to use 3D printing to make real-world connections to enhance their
learning. With having a 3D printer in our Makerspace, students are now able to go above and
beyond the engineering design process to test out their products and make revisions. This process
helps build problem-solving skills, perseverance, and critical thinking skills. Through my
internship I hope to support my teachers in building their confidence to step outside of their
comfort zone and experiment with 21st century project-based learning. As teachers collaborate,
plan, and support one another, we can be printing in all aspects of learning. Once the teachers
feel comfortable in navigating the tool and planning meaningful lessons in connection to
curriculum, our students will have purposeful, innovative learning experiences that they can
bring with them as they prepare for the real-world.

Models of Change

When considering different models of change in relation to my internship, I refer to one Ely’s
Eight Conditions. I feel that availability of resources and time is going to play a major role in the
success of the participants. Most of my participants are at the entry level of the ACOT model. In
order to move them from entry to adoption, I plan to set aside time for each participant and assist
them in ways that work best for them. If a participant is not able to attend a Tech Tuesday on a
specific topic of 3D printing that interests them, I will be sure to address their needs in another
way. As a leader, I will be flexible with my time and support each of my participants at their own
level of learning and understanding in a way that works best for them. I plan to create resources
for each grade level to relieve any stress of having something added to their busy schedules. A
Makerspace schedule will be sent out to assure that there will be no conflicts with availability of
time or pacing of their 3D printing projects.
Online Learning
Throughout my internship I plan to compile and organize resources on a google doc for the
teachers at Norwood. During Tech Tuesday meetings, notes and other “tips and tricks” regarding
the 3D printer will be shared in our schools shared drive. This will later be used as a resource for
teacher buy-in in the future. I will organize resources by grade level and include a list of
objectives, materials, and steps to take for each 3D printing project we plan. My hope is that in
the future, participants will continue to add to the document, which will create a school-wide
resource for teachers.
Action Plan

To begin my internship, I have given my staff a survey to complete in May of this year. This
helped me to find where everyone lies in the ACOT model and guided my first steps to
introducing the new technology. The next step I took was to join the tech team at my school.
This team includes myself and the two tech liaisons at Norwood Elementary. During summer
2018 I was able to dedicate time to learning the logistics of the 3D printer. I familiarized myself
with how to operate it to effectively relay the information to the tech team members. I was
allotted time during teacher week back in August 2018 to have the participants meet with me to
discuss the what/how/why of my internship. During this time the participants at each grade level
asked questions and received clarification on how they will implement 3D printing throughout
the fall semester.

At the start of the school year, the tech team will come together to discuss concerns with 3D
printing, and how we can better support our teachers. We will plan to meet twice every month
for Tech Tuesdays. During this time, the participants of my internship will meet for progressive
learning sessions on 3D printing. The first Tech Tuesday will be held in September in the
Makerspace and will consist of learning about the basics of the 3D printer. In this session, the
participants will learn to navigate its features, and have practice using the Tinkercad website.
The following sessions will be time for me to plan and collaborate with each of the participants
to find where they feel most comfortable implementing their 3D printing project. I will be there
to support each participant in locating resources and materials they will need to be successful in
their implementation.

Throughout the year, I will make myself available for continued support for my participants.
Tech Tuesdays will be held twice a month and will vary in topic as teachers express concerns or
specific areas of 3D printing they would like more support in. The purpose of these meetings is
for my participants to expand their knowledge of 3D printing in order to plan meaningful
Makerspace lessons. My goal for the end of this internship is to create a greater buy-in of
teachers to implement 3D printing projects into their curriculum and establish a deeper sense of
collaboration problem solving skills in our students at Norwood Elementary. As I complete my
internship, I plan to keep a personal folder of artifacts for when and how I communicated with
my teachers such as sign in sheets or emails. If something doesn’t go as planned, I will document
what went wrong and how I can fix it or prevent it from happening again throughout the process.
I feel that keeping a folder of my documents and progress will help as I reflect on what is/is not
working. I will write my reflections on OneNote as they arise, so that I can easily refer back to
them when completing my key concepts portfolio.

Evaluate Learning
In order to evaluate the participants’ learning, there will be monthly check-ins via email, survey,
or Tech Tuesdays. A survey will be sent after each information session where the teachers can
rate the effectiveness of the learning experience and share what they would like to know more
about. The teachers will know to contact me individually through email if they have
questions/concerns about their specific grade level project. This communication will also help
me to set up individual meeting times if needed, so that each teacher feels comfortable when it
comes time to teach their lesson. By the end of the internship, I will know that learning took
place based on whether the teacher at each grade level is able to share a successful 3D printing
learning experience with their class. The project must align with state standards and curriculum
and require the students to work collaboratively using problem solving skills.
The importance of their learning does not lie in the finished printed product itself, but instead the
steps and challenges the students overcame to get there. Teachers at each grade level will be
asked to have students complete a graphic organizer based on the engineering design process as
an artifact to show the steps they completed to get to their final printed product. I want the
teachers at Norwood to look at the 3D printer as an innovative learning tool that their students
can use to work together and use problem solving skills that will help them as they enter the real
world.
