CELL WASHING REPORT

H2 GENERATOR REPLACEMENT PROJECT
POLYPROPYLENE PLANT PERTAMINA PLAJU SOUTH SUMATERA, INDONESIA

Date: 5 – 14 December 2016

Activities:
1. Drained all of KOH solution within stacks and stored it inside large plastic containers.
2. Loaded 300 liters of demineralized water within the stack.
3. Performed cell washing procedure, hold it for 5 hours.
4. Then, unloaded all of the post-circulated demineralized water.
5. Checked SB19A tank and removed the magnetic filter inside.
6. Cleaned magnetic filter surface from metal particulate as well as cleaned SB19A tank inner
surface from the same contaminant.
7. Put the magnetic filter back into SB19A tank.
8. Followed the procedure from no.2 and so on.
9. Performed for 3 times of washing.

Results:
1. The appearance of drained KOH are clear by slightly dark-yellowish color, slightly viscous,
and a little foam inside.
2. After performing the cell cleaning at the first time, we could find the appearance of used
demineralized water became yellowish-clear with slightly viscous and foam as found during
cell cleaning. The color was getting clearer, the dark-yellowish color was reduced and
became more dilute after performing cell washing for several times.
3. At the first time, it was found so much mud like-metal particulate which blocked the area
within SB19A tank as well as found on the magnetic filter. However the electrolyte flow
was not too much affected by the contaminant by observing the level indication of flow
switch which is always maximum. The trapped contaminant was getting less after
performing several cell washing procedures.

Post-Activities:
1. Clean all of the interconnections and vessels which were not contacted with the water
circulation from the remaining KOH.
2. Prepare for cell handling procedure.
