Software: Intermediate Algebra, by Hawkes Publishing. (Note: You will need to save your password and
certificates.)
Course Description: Topics include solving linear, quadratic, rational, absolute value, and radical equations
and inequalities, operations on polynomials including factoring, exponents, rational expressions and radical
expressions, and graphs of linear equations in two variables.
Content: We will cover topics from Chapters 1 - 8. The final exam will be comprehensive.
Calculators: You may use a calculator for each test. (Graphing calculators cannot be used for Test 1.)
Even though some have built-in calculators, cell phones cannot be used at all during tests and need to be turned
off before the test begins.
Grades: The final grade is the average of four tests(100 points each), computer certificates assigned in the
homework (150 points), and a cumulative final exam (350).
Attendance: Everyone is expected to be present, on time, and prepared for each class meeting.
Make-up Tests: If you should happen to miss a test, a special (possibly more difficult) makeup test may be arranged (at
the discretion of the instructor) ONLY IN THE CASE WHERE the instructor is notified before the time/day of the test.
Only one makeup test is permitted per student, second one is a zero grade, NO EXCEPTIONS.
Cheating/plagiarism: You will receive a grade of zero and/or will be taken before the Academic Review
Board for possible dismissal from school.
Extra Help: The ASC Lab (Academic Support Center) is available to you Monday – Saturday. In this lab you
may receive FREE tutoring and you may use the textbook, solutions guide and software for this course.
2. Review and expand solving equations and inequalities (linear, rational, quadratic, and radical).
6. Review and expand the techniques in graphing linear equations and inequalities.

2. Once it opens, the student must enter the program using an access code. The student must type it in the
space provided and click OK.
At this time, the student will have the opportunity to save the access code on a diskette, or other storage
device, such as a jump drive or flash drive. From then on, the student will enter their access code by
clicking “Load from Disk” and browse for the access code file.
Loading the IRSC curriculum:` (You may skip this page if you have high-speed internet access
because the curriculum will automatically be updated for you. Do not skip this page if you have
dial up internet access.)
If your instructor has edited the Hawkes homework lessons (the Certify mode) and you cannot connect to the
internet, you will need to load these lesson changes from a file.
To do this:
1. Go to the IRCC webpage www.irsc.edu. Select the “Staff/Faculty” option at the top; Choose “Faculty
Websites” and select “Mathematics”; On the Mathematics Department webpage, select “Resources”
and “MAT 1033 Software Updates”. Follow the directions in step 1 to save the “Curriculum.HCF” file on
your computer and then disconnect the internet.
2. Log into the Intermediate Algebra software using your access code.
4. Next, browse to the location where you saved the Curriculum.HCF file. Select the file and click Open.
5. The following message will appear to inform you that the file was loaded successfully.
6. Once complete, your lessons will be automatically updated for the entire semester. (You will not need
to repeat steps 1-5 again unless your instructor tells you otherwise.)
Completing Assignments:
1. Once entered into the program, the student needs to click on the chapter and lesson which was assigned.
2. The student should always begin by clicking “Practice,” so they can practice the
assigned problems. In this mode, the student may choose the level of difficulty of the
problems. Once the student types the answer, he/she must click the S button, or submit,
in the bottom right hand corner.
The T, or tutor, button is available at the bottom right hand corner of the screen, if the student would like
help on how to solve the problem.
(Practicing is important, as the student can only make so many mistakes during the Certify mode
until he/she gets kicked out of the assignment and must start the assignment over.)
3. In order to complete assignments in the program, the student must be in the “Certify”
mode. When the student successfully completes the assignment, a certificate of
completion should appear on the screen.
At this time, the program will give the student the option to Print and/or Save. A student should ALWAYS
SAVE the completed certificate onto the computer’s hard drive and a diskette, or other storage device.
Printing the certificate is also suggested. If there is an internet glitch and the certificate is not saved, your
assignment will be lost.
4. If the student is working on a computer with high-speed internet access, the certificate should automatically
appear in the instructor’s online grade book. (This may or may not happen with dial-up internet service.)
The student should verify this by pressing progress report at the bottom of the opening screen. This will
take them to his/her progress report online, which shows assignment due dates, completion dates, etc.
The student will need to enter the site using his/her access code, which can be entered one of the following
ways:
a. From a disk, or other storage device – click on file. Browse for the access code file and click OK.
b. By typing it in – click on typing. Type the access code and click OK.
c. By copying and pasting – click on pasting. Paste the access code in the box provided and click OK.
Note: The first time that a student logs on to register a certificate, they will need to choose their instructor and their section.
2. The student will then see his/her
progress report.
Once he/she highlights the appropriate folder, then click OK. A list of all certificates saved in the chosen
folder will appear. The student must then click submit.
At this time the certificates should be registered.
The student should go back to the progress report and verify whether or not he/she successfully registered
the completed certificates.
Note: * Be sure you submit your Certification Code ON or BEFORE the due date to get credit for the
assignment. If it is posted after the deadline, it will appear as Late no matter what the completion
date is.
