Description of Educational Setting:
The centre is a pre-kindy childcare (early-childhood centre) that operates during the hours of 7am-3pm. The centre is
also a tutoring centre operating between the hours of 4pm until 8:30pm. The range of students is diverse as the centre
caters to students of all year groups ranging from k-12. The centre requires workers to create their own worksheet
tailored to suit the needs of the students they are teaching. Therefore programming skills are necessary. Furthermore
the centre provides selective school and NAPLAN preparation.
The tutoring centre is located in the western suburbs of Sydney with most of the students deriving from first
generation immigrant families. The students deriving from non-English speaking backgrounds have pre-programmed
material designed specifically to target EAL/D student’s English skills. The centre is funded by the government,
therefore a majority of the students who attend the centre are from low socio-economic backgrounds.

Summary Comments:

Rima has shown proficiency in her teaching skills. She initially had trouble programming work to suit the level of the
students that attend the centre. Most of the students are EAL/D students in which differentiation is essential in order
to allow for accessibility of work for all students. Rima undertook the challenge of scaffolding students into the
material provided and essentially breaking down the material to simplify tasks for students. Additionally Rima had to
deal with behavioural issues which is a common occurrence within the centre. She at first was a little frazzled with the
behavioural issues present but she endeavoured and raised to the challenge. She continuously built rapport with the
students which allowed for a more smoothly run lesson. Rima is consistently improving her teaching abilities and
understanding the necessity of good rapport with student in order to allow for effective behavioural management. I
am positive that she will endeavour in her future career.
