cylindrical bottles of radius 3 cm and height 6cm. How many such milk bottles can be
filled?

2. A toy is in the shape of a right circular cylinder with a hemisphere at one end and a
cone at the other end. The height and the radius of the cylindrical part are 13 cm and 5
cm respectively. The radius of the hemisphere and the conical part is the same as that
of the cylinder. Calculate the surface area of the toy, if the height of the conical part is
12cm.

3. The diameter of a sphere is 8cm. Find the length of the side of a cube, correct to 1
decimal place, which has the same surface area as that of the sphere.

4. Find the number of square meters of tin foil necessary to cover completely, 56 right
circular cones, whose height is 8cm, if the radius of its base is 6cm.

5. The surface area of a solid metallic sphere is 1,256 cm2. It is melted and recast into solid
right circular cones of radius 2.5 cm and height 8 cm. Calculate :
i. The radius of the solid sphere.
ii. The number of cones recast. [Take π = 3.14]

6. A hollow sphere of internal and external diameters 4cm and 8cm respectively is melted
into a cone of base diameter 8cm. Find the height of the cone.

7. A vessel in the form of an inverted cone, is of height 8cm and radius 5cm and is full of
water. When some spheres of radius 0.5cm are dropped into the vessel, ¼ of the water
overflows. How many spheres were dropped into the vessel?

8. From a solid cylinder whose height is 16 cm and radius is 12 cm, a conical cavity of
height 8 cm and of base radius 6 cm is hollowed out. Find the volume and total surface
area of the remaining solid.

9. A solid sphere and a solid hemi-sphere have the same total surface area. Find the ratio
between their volumes.

10. Metallic spheres of radii 6 cm, 8 cm and 10 cm respectively are melted and recast into a
single solid sphere. Find the surface area of solid sphere formed.
1. Two ships are sailing in the sea on the two sides of a lighthouse. The
angle of elevation of the top of the lighthouse is observed from the ships
are 30º and 45º respectively. If the lighthouse is 100 m high, the
distance between the two ships is:
A. 300 m B. 173 m
C. 273 m D. 200 m

Let BD be the lighthouse and A and C be the positions of

the ships.
Then, BD = 100 m, BAD = 30° , BCD = 45°

tan30°=BD/BA
1 100
⇒ =
√3 𝐵𝐴

⇒ 𝐵𝐴 = 100√3

tan45°= BD/BC

100
⇒1 =
𝐵𝐶

⇒BC =100

Distance between the two ships

= AC = BA + BC
=100 √3+100

=100(√3+1)
= 100(1.73+1) = 100 × 2.73 = 273 m

2. A man standing at a point P is watching the top of a tower, which makes

an angle of elevation of 30º with the man's eye. The man walks some

elevation becomes 45º. What is the distance between the base of the
tower and the point P?
A. 9 units B. 3√3 units
C. Data inadequate D. 12 units

𝑆𝑅
tan 30° =

From a point P on a level ground, the angle of elevation of the top tower is
30º. If the tower is 200 m high, the distance of point P from the foot of the
tower is:
A. 346 m B. 400 m
C. 312 m D. 298 m

𝑅𝑄

3. The angle of elevation of the sun, when the length of the shadow of a
tree is equal to the height of the tree, is:
A. None of these B. 60°
C. 45° D. 30°
Consider the diagram shown above where QR
represents the tree and PQ represents its shadow
We have, QR = PQ
Let QPR = θ
𝑄𝑅
tan θ = = 1 (since QR = PQ)
𝑃𝑄
=> θ = 45°
i.e., required angle of elevation = 45°
