SWAPPING, BOOSTING, AND DEFYING THE LAWS
OF HONDA’S SUBCOMPACT HATCHBACK
BY AARON BONK * PHOTOS BY CHAD BURDETTE

12 HONDATUNINGMAGAZINE.COM
It’s 2014 and K Series engine swaps have become about as routine as American-
Taiwanese trading companies and cloned Honda wares. What was once a
comprehensive conversion that required all sorts of brainpower has been simplifed and
intellectually ebbed thanks to generous afermarket support. For most ’90s-era and newer
front-wheel-drive Hondas, the whole undertaking results in very few surprises.
Unless you’ve got a frst-generation Fit. Here, afermarket backing in the form of engine
mounts and wiring harnesses is in defcit. Even loose-lipped information purveyors who
otherwise indefnitely habitate online, doling out whatever K Series-related information
they may be privy to, remain dumbfounded when questions of frst-generation Fits are
posed. Tat’s mostly because of the complexity of such transplants and the ’07-08 Fit’s
comparably small engine bay. So small that all sorts of cutting and fnagling is necessary
just to get the assembly into place. Its electrical system is just as challenging. Te frst-
generation Fit’s electronics is unlike any other regularly practiced engine swap’s—too new
to follow in the footsteps of the ’92-95 Civic, for example, yet too old to play by the same
rulebook as the ’11-and-later CR-Z.

MICHAEL BLANCKE’S ’92 CIVIC CX

A LOVE/HATE RELATIONSHIP
FROM THE START
TEXT AND PHOTOS BY RODREZ

Te ’92-95 Civic, or “EH chassis” as

U.S.-bred versions are stamped, is by
far the most popular body style to build and
modify. Flanked by two monumentally popular
Civic generations (’88-91 and ’96-00), the slip-
pery, mid-’90s hatchback has proven itself more
than capable with countless street, show, and
even record-setting race versions that blanket
the Honda enthusiast crowd. With all of that
notoriety comes a rather tricky part—building
a standout. Owning one of these vehicles auto-
matically places you into very crowded waters,
and breaking free from the herd is typically
short-lived as trends and “looks” seem to disap-
pear only moments afer they’ve arrived.
From a purist’s standpoint, simplicity still
reins supreme as hard-core EH fanatics search
for a proper balance of performance and un-
compromising aesthetic touches. For Michael
Blancke, owner of this ’92 CX, the lure of the
popular hatchback wasn’t all that enticing. “I
started out wanting to build my ’95 four-door,”
he says. “I was collecting all of the parts for a
couple of years, including a built ITR motor and
SiR interior.” As the parts pile continued to stack
up, Michael’s good friend RC Chacon, owner of
RC’s Garage, was busy building the exact car you
see pictured. Only, at that time, its chest cavity
was home to a boosted B Series heart, and the
car had gained national attention as it graced
the cover of this very magazine. Avid HT readers

ing a stock D15, he wasn’t exaggerating and that became painfully obvious one
summer day. DeeJay recalls, “My girlfriend and I were playing hooky and driving
to Santa Cruz when I saw this lowered Civic, and we started messing around in
trafc.” What he thought was just two car guys messing around on the road was
anything but. “We got stuck in trafc, and these guys were pissed,” he says. “Tey
started yelling at my girl and when I yelled back, it got bad.” Bad is in reference
to the four occupants of the car hopping out with the intentions of starting some
serious trouble. “Te four began smashing on my ride, and came afer my girl and

the power to the road, a set of Volk

the car was complete.
Te build that DeeJay took on was
somewhat of a response to the guys
who tried to jump him. To make sure
it never happened again, it evolved
into not only a great getaway car,
but a great all-around performer. If
you happen to see him on the road,
don’t expect him to play around on
public streets. He made it very clear
that he learned his lesson, and adds,
“You never know who you’re f***ing
around with.” Words to live by …

OEM IS BEST
“I don’t want special stuff, that’s ridiculous,” DeeJay says. When asked about why the mostly OEM
upgrades to his K Series, DeeJay tells us that he simply doesn’t want to work on his car all the time. That’s not
to say he’s lazy, but he doesn’t want to order special tools, parts, or training for his build. He adds, “I love the
fact that I can get everything I need at an [auto] parts store.” At its core, a del Sol is essentially a Civic, a point
DeeJay was quick to make. On the other hand, he also pointed out that it’s not really a Civic. He explains, “It’s
like you get all the bonuses from having a Civic, without driving the same car that everyone does. I like that.”
Although DeeJay loves his OEM parts, he’s going to have to travel outside the brand for his next mod: an
electronic power steering conversion using parts from an MR2. When confronted with the affront to Honda he
states, “I know ... I don’t want to talk about it.”

DRAG RACE/CAR SHOW

IMPORT FACE-OFF:
BAKERSFIELD, CA
PHOTOS JIMMY NGUYEN February 16, 2014, Famoso Raceway

T
he Import Face-Of tour
made its way to Auto Club
Famoso Raceway for some
heated drag action and
accompanying car show. HT
alumnus Jason Park of FCS, Jeremy Loo-
kofsky of Drag Cartel, Javier of Hondata,
and a trio of cars from the SpeedFactory
team were in full force, looking to make a
statement at the season opener.
During the event, one of the most in-
teresting stories involved SpeedFactory’s
Kevin Kempf, who afer a two-year hiatus
to tend to his growing family, returned
to driver duty in the Competition Clutch
Civic. Having been of-track for such a
long period defnitely took its toll, and
Kempf debuted with a 9.65, a far cry from
the team’s previous high 7/low 8-second
passes. However, that frst pass was all
it took as his very next hit resulted in a

64 HONDATUNINGMAGAZINE.COM
blistering 8.07 at 188 mph, knocking of
any road rust and silencing any doubters
in quick fashion. Later in the day, during
frst round eliminations, having pulled the
parachute afer his run, Kempf felt the car
pull hard enough to the right to kiss the wall
causing some body, intercooler, and wheel/
tire damage. With the 26-inch front, 15-inch
rear tires unusable, SpeedFactory mounted
a set of much smaller 25-inch front, 13-inch
rears in order to make it to the next round
against a lightning-fast Lookofsky, and
later, an RB26-powered Miata. In the end,
the Competition Clutch Civic did indeed
take the win in FIP, but blew its engine at
the fnish line in the process. Te drama for
SpeedFactory didn’t stop there. Cole Mar-
mon’s Vibrant Performance–backed coupe
sacrifced a turbo during its run, but the
team was able to swap it out and get back on
track in order to take home the win in FWD
class with an 8.65 at 175 mph. And fnally,
SpeedFactory’s Avid Racing hatch made
it to the All Motor Pro fnals with a 10.22
at 131 mph afer swapping out a broken
transmission, which they later backed with a
10.15 before the engine let go and they were
unable to make the fnal call, leaving them
in the runner-up position to AMP class
winner Jerry Guzman of Jerry Built fame. In
the Outlaw class, it was Jason Ames’ Civic
taking top honors with a 9.214 at 157 mph,
while All Motor Sport, was won by Anthony
Marquez with an 11.907 at 115-mph efort.

Street-derived classes like these have
arguably played a signifcant role in
import drag racing’s revitalization across
the country. Import drag racing’s peak
in the mid 2000s came at the expense of
seemingly unobtainable cars that fans
could simply no longer aspire to build
themselves nor relate to. Today’s classes
better limit modifcations—a factor that’s
helped keep costs down for racers without
sacrifcing the sport’s competitiveness. As
a result, participation is up and the sport
continues to thrive. Visit CMI’s website

throughout California, including Sacra-
mento, Bakersfeld, and Fontana.
