1.0 Introduction
This Product Support Bulletin (PSB) provides VNX5100, VNX5150, VNX5300, and VNX5500 product release
information.
2.0 Applicability
Information in this PSB applies to the VNX5100, VNX5150, VNX5300, and VNX5500 hardware.
6.1 Overview
In January 2011 EMC announced a new family of EMC products called VNX. The VNX family will, over time,
replace both CLARiiON and Celerra. The VNX family includes the VNX1 Series, VNX2 Series, the VNXe1 Series,
and VNXe2 Series. This PSB covers four of the eight products within the VNX1 Series — the VNX5100, VNX5150,
VNX5300, and VNX5500.
All four products provide SAN-attached storage to third party hosts. The VNX5300 and VNX5500 can also be
configured to provide NAS-attached storage. A VNX5100, VNX5300, or VNX5500 when providing SAN-attached
storage is described as a VNX5100 Block, VNX5300 Block, and a VNX5500 Block product. A VNX5300 or VNX5500
providing NAS-attached storage is described as a VNX5300 File and a VNX5500 File product. A VNX5300 or
VNX5500 which provides both SAN-attached and NAS-attached storage is described as a VNX5300 Unified and a
VNX5500 Unified product.
All products in the VNX1 Series run the same software, named VNX Operating Environment, or VNX OE. The
software that delivers storage capabilities is called VNX OE for Block, while the NAS capabilities are provided by
VNX OE for File.
All products in the VNX1 Series are managed and maintained by the same Unisphere software. Unisphere version 1.1
is the minimum version that supports VNX1. Refer to the VNX software Product Support Bulletin for more
information.
Readers familiar with CLARiiON and Celerra will find many similarities to the VNX1 product. The VNX1 hardware
shares parts with CX4 and NS-xxx product. The VNX OE inherits functionality from FLARE and DART. One of the
biggest changes from the CLARiiON and Celerra products is the fact that all VNX disk drives have a SAS (serial
attached SCSI) interface to the storage processor, not a Fibre Channel interface. Hosts can connect to the storage
processors via Fibre Channel, but disk drive connectivity is exclusively SAS. This means there are no disk drives
shared between CLARiiON and VNX.
6.3 VNX5150
On August 22, 2014 EMC introduced the VNX5150. The VNX5150 is a VNX5300 Block array that is exclusively
sold by Lenovo. A unique Product Serial Number Tag (PSNT) Part Number, 900-567-037, facilitates product
identification and call routing. The minimum code revision is 05.32.000.5.215. Unisphere has been modified to
present a “Lenovo|EMC” logo to the user.
Lenovo will sell the VNX5150 under either an OEM contract or a reseller contract. When the OEM contract is used
the VNX5150 will be supported by Lenovo and will be in the CSI as “Reseller Maintained.” When Lenovo sells
under the reseller contract the VNX5150 will be supported by EMC.
The VNX5150 CRUs and FRUs and CRU responsibilities are the same as the VNX5300 Block. The VNX5150 has
all of the features and functionality of the VNX5300 Block with three differences. First, the VNX5150 cannot be
upgraded to a Unified product. Second, it cannot be converted to a larger VNX array. Third, the hardware warranty
provides Basic support. (The VNX5300 hardware warranty provides Enhanced support.)
In a VNX File and VNX Unified system there will be a Control Station above the DPE. Optionally, a second Control
Station could be mounted above the first. The DME is above the Control Station(s). A VNX5500 can have a second
DME above the first. The second DME can only contain one Data Mover in the VNX5500.
In a VNX5100, VNX5150, VNX5300 Block, and VNX5500 Block systems there will not be a Control Station or
DME. The DAEs will be mounted immediately above the DPE. VNX5300 and VNX5500 customers who are
contemplating a future upgrade to VNX Unified are encouraged to leave empty space between the DPE and the first
DAE for the Control Station and DME to be added in the future.
Customers who require more disk drives than can fit in the DPE may purchase one or more DAEs. There are two
DAEs available. The rear view of the two is shown in Figures 2 and 3.
Note: The DAE-15 is 3U tall, and the DAE-25 is 2U tall.

6.8 Miscellaneous
Rack-Mounting Options: The VNX5100, VNX5150, VNX5300, and VNX5500 can be shipped in a new 40U rack.
They can also be shipped “Field Mount,” meaning they will be rack mounted in a rack already owned by the
customer.
Rack Mounting Rails: The Field Mount systems ship on a single pallet (add-on DAEs ship separately).
File and Unified systems are “mounted” in the pallet using the same rails the customer will use to rack mount the
hardware in their own rack. This packaging enables quick installation and persuades customers to stack the hardware
in the specific order preferred for serviceability.
CCA: CCA is not required to install the VNX Series of products, but is an available option.

Notes
1
VNX5100, VNX5150, VNX5300, and VNX5500 ship with all VNX OE software pre-loaded in the factory.
Installing the system with the tools delivered in the VNX installation Tool Box will install the VNX OE software.
2
A VNX OE upgrade is NOT part of an installation and is NOT part of the VNX warranty. A software maintenance
contract is required for a software upgrade. Both VNX OE for Block and VNX OE for File may be upgraded by
customers after the product is installed and the system is registered in the Installed Base.
3
The gateway product is installed with the latest software version. Therefore, an upgrade at time of installation is
unnecessary. Customers can upgrade the VNX OE for File software.
13.1 Implementation
Technology Solutions/Professional Services (TSS) offers implementation services for all VNX products.
When purchased, the assigned Project Manager will coordinate the installation by IDEs and the implementation by
the Implementation Specialist. Each customer situation is unique, and it is the responsibility of the local team to best
determine specific tasks to be accomplished by each organization.
Installation 1: Installation kits cover the rack and stack of system, completion of initial installation, and Mgmt GUI is
accessible. Model number uses the –IN prefix (PS-BAS-INxxxx). Only one –IN per system ordered.
Implementation 2: Only one –IM kit (PS-BAS-IMxxxx) is ordered per system. Additional file systems, hosts, features
and protocol implementation will be covered via Adder Services (-AD).
Accelerate 3: EMC Accelerate Hardware Deployment services (PS-PKG-IMxxxx) include both installation and
implementation.
Adder 4: Prerequisite is either an –IM kit (PS-BAS-IMxxxx) or an EMC Accelerate deployment kit (PS-PKG-
IMxxxx).
