Chapter 2 : Methodology

Experiment 13a : Counter-current Plate Heat Exchanger

Valves HV5, HV7, HV9, HV10, HV12

and HV13 are opened . Thus, pumps
P1 and P2 are switched on.

The flow rate for cold-water streams are

fixed at 18 L/min by adjusting vales.
While the flow rate for hot-water
streams are adjusted to 12, 14 ,16, 18,
20 and 22 L/min.

Record the temperature of inlet hot

water (T1), outlet hot water (T2), inlet
cold water(t1) and outlet cold water(t2)
and tabulate the data into a table.

Calculate for ∆Tlm by using formula

𝑇1 −𝑡2 −(𝑇2 − 𝑡1 )
∆Tlm = 𝑇 −𝑡
ln 1 2
𝑇 2 − 𝑡1

Calculate for heat loss and efficiency, by

using formula Q = UA∆Tlm
Experiment 13b : Co-current Plate Heat Exchanger

Valves HV7, HV8, HV11, HV12 and

HV13 are opened. Thus, pumps P1
and P2 are switched on.

The flow rate for cold-water streams are

fixed at 18 L/min by adjusting vales.
While the flow rate for hot-water
streams are adjusted to 12, 14 ,16, 18,
20 and 22 L/min.

water (T1), outlet hot water (T2), inlet
cold water(t1) and outlet cold water(t2)
and tabulate the data into a table.

Calculate for ∆Tlm by using formula

𝑇1 −𝑡2 −(𝑇2 − 𝑡1 )
∆Tlm = 𝑇 −𝑡
ln 1 2
𝑇 2 − 𝑡1
