Lesson Title: We are Becoming the Place Values!

Teacher Name: Miss. Servello
Date Less/on is Taught: September 23, 2019
Subject/Discipline: Mathematics
Grade Level: 2nd
Number of Students: 18 students
Allocated Instructional Time: 30-40 minutes
Multiple Intelligences Addressed: Mathematical/ Logical reasoning, Linguistic
Pennsylvania Common Core Standards or Early Learning Standards:

Standard - CC.2.1.2.B.1 Use place value concepts to represent amounts of tens

and ones and to compare three digit numbers

Standard - CC.1.2.2.J Acquire and use grade-appropriate conversational,

general academic, and domain-specific words and phrases.

II. Rationale and Background (Danielson 1b: Demonstrating Knowledge of

Students)

1. The purpose of this culminating experience it to have the children further

expand their knowledge on this place value unit. We are going BECOME
place values. I want this to be a fun and meaningful experience for the
students!

2. The students are aware of the term place value, along with 3-digit numbers.
The students also are familiar with the ones, tens, hundreds, thousands and
adding and subtracting with jumping. The students are also familiar with 4-
digit numbers. The students are now familiar with standard, word form, and
expanded form.

III. Lesson Objectives (Danielson 1c: Setting Instructional Objectives)

1. TLWBAT: demonstrate knowledge dealing with place value. CC.2.1.2.B.1

2. TLWBAT: discuss and answer different questions regarding place value.

CC.1.2.2.J

IV. Materials (Danielson 1d: Demonstrating Knowledge of Resources)

Teacher:
1. Numbers
2. Whiteboard

Student:
1. Tape

V. Procedures (Danielson 1a: Demonstrating Knowledge of Content and Pedagogy)

(Danielson 1e: Designing Coherent Instruction) (Danielson 3a: Communicating
with Students) (3b Using Questioning and Discussion Techniques) (Danielson 3c
Engaging Students in Learning)

A. Introduction and Motivation

1. Today we are going to BECOME the place values we have been

learning about for the past two weeks! I want the students to be excited
and engaged.

B. Lesson Body
1. I will assign each student a number that I already have printed out.
2. After each student has a number, each child is going to write either a 3
or 4-digit number on a piece of paper.
3. I will collect all of the numbers and write them on the board.
4. We will go number by number.
5. The students will use themselves to a 3 or 4-digit number.
6. While either three or four students are up in the front of the classroom
standing as the number written on the board. The rest of the class will
have to call out each digit in the number and its place value.
7. To expand, we will then say the number out loud in word form, and
write it on the board next to the standard form in expanded form.
8. We will repeat this until every number has been completed!

C. Simplification and Extensions (aka strategies for differentiated instruction)

(Danielson 3e: Demonstrating Flexibility and Responsiveness)
1. For a gifted student, he or she will be allowed to write the expanded form
on the board while the rest of the students are saying the word form. That
is only if the student is finished before everyone else. This activity is for
everyone to participate in as a whole class.
2. A child who has ADHD will be given the opportunity to work with a partner
or a buddy, that is a student who is able to concentrate on the task at
hand to help him or her stay on task with the assignment given.
3. For an ELL I will be sure to assist the child in what they are struggling
with. I want the child to feel as if he or she can ask me anything. I will sit
next to the child and thoroughly explain to the student and break it down
into increments so that the student can better understand. I will sit next to
the child as the class is participating in this activity as a whole group.
D. Closure/Conclusion

1. We will go over the different place values.

2. We will talk about what we have learned.
3. Any questions regarding place value will be allowed to be asked and
answered at this time.

VI. Home-School Connection/Homework Assignment/Independent Practice

(Danielson 4c: Communicating with Families)

To make a home school connection, I will send a picture of the students to each
individual parent and or guardian. I will have sent an email earlier in the week to
be able to have permission to take pictures of their children to have in our
classroom. I also want to make sure that the families of the students get the
chance to see their children BECOME PLACE VALUES!

VII. Evaluation

This section of your lesson plan addresses two aspects of evaluation:

assessment of student learning and your assessment of the lesson.

A. Student Assessment (Danielson 1f: Designing Student Assessment)

(Danielson 3d: Using Assessment in Instruction)

1. Formative assessment: I will assess the students as they are explaining

the place values in each 3 or 4-digit number represented by the students
wearing each digit to make a number. I will also be able to see who is
familiar and comfortable with standard form, word form, as well as
expanded form by having the students say or write them on the board.
