How it h Done:
Perhaps the best feature of this version of t h e Clock Dial Trick
is the fact t h a t it can be constructed for a matter of a few pence.
T h e same effects are obtained as w i t h the expensive glass diat a n d
mechanical point, and there is no risk o f breakage as w i t h the
costly glass dial. Both hand and dial may be subjected to a most
m i n u t e inspection at any time yet it is absolutely impossible for
anyone to detect the secret.
Fig. 1 shows the dial, this is constructed of heavy w h i t e card-
board, the numerals being painted thereon, in black. A small
wooden pin is securely glued in the centre o f the dial and o n this
the pointer spins.
Fig. 2 illustrates the hand or pointer; this is m a d e from a very
light quality of cardboard and the special design should be followed
so far as the centre of hand is concerned. It will be noted that
t h e cog design in centre coincides to a certain extent w i t h the
hours on a clock dial, and therein lies part of the secret.
A s n o mechanism whatever enters into the w o r k i n g of this
apparatus the reader will n o d o u b t guessl t h a t a f a k e of some
k i n d is used, this is q u i t e true if a tiny ball of Plasticine can be
correctly termed a " f a k e . "
I n a s m u c h as there are humorous patter schemes and instructions
galore on t h e Clock Dial Trick I will c o n t e n t myself w i t h explain-
ing only the m e t h o d of working this particular apparatus.
In the first place the performer has the ball or pellet of Plasti-
cine gripped between first and second fingers o f right h a n d . Dial
and hand may be examined by audience, then supposing the hour
selected is 6 o'clock it is only necessary to press the pellet of
Plasticine behind the cog w h i c h corresponds to that hour on
centre of pointer; hand is placed on spindle and set in m o t i o n ;
w h e n hand stops spinning it will be pointing to 6 o'clock on dial.
A n o t h e r hour is selected, Plasticine is transferred to the correct
position and effect continued as above. The humorous patter
between spins affords the magician a m p l e time to move the pellet
of Plasticine, and pellet may be removed from pointer at any
m o m e n t should it be necessary to hand the latter for inspection.

A n excellent presentation routine w i t h humorous patter t h a t
could be adapted for this effect will be found in t h a t splendid
patter book " Magic Made Merry " by H. A . Palmer, and I
heartily recommend the reader to add this book to his collection.
FLAG DAY.
Here w e have an excellent effect w h i c h gives a n e w lease of
life to our old friend, the Miser's Dream.
In brief, the performer c o m m e n t s on the great n u m b e r of Flag
Days w e have, and illustrates h o w this could be simplified by
utilising magicians as collectors. Holding one of t h e familiar
collection boxes in his left hand, he removes a coin from his pocket,
drops the coin into the b o x , and instantly a1 flag or poppy
appears in the lapel of his coat. He then proceeds to show h o w
a magician could collect the necessary funds, coin after coin
appearing at his finger-tips and being dropped into the collection
box, finally concluding w i t h a regular fistful of coins w h i c h h e
showers into the box.
How if is Done:
counted one by one into the b o x ; again lid may be removed and
coins showered therein, or yet again the performer may desire to
go d o w n in audience, and apparently m a k e a collection from
spectators' clothing, etc.

The butterflies are those m a n u f a c t u r e d by the S. S. A d a m s
Company, they are somewhat similar to the well k n o w n " M o t h s "
b u t in this case they are strongly m a d e w i t h metal frames and
are beautifully coloured to represent butterflies. O n e d o z e n of
these butterflies are required for t h e effect.
T h e construction of the tray will be gleaned by referring to the
illustration. It will be noted that there is a metal flap hinged
to the centre df the tray and this is held in closed position w i t h
a tiny catch on side of tray. In addition to this hinged flap there
is a loose flap to cover the bottom of tray, similar to that used in
the Spirit Slate effect.
T h e box for t h e vanish of the butterflies can be most any style
that will do the needful, for example the double type box having
partition at centre and a lid at both top and b o t t o m . A very
suitawe box for this vanish can be obtained from Edw. Bagshawe
and Co., London, England, or no d o u b t through M a x Holden,
American Representative—this box is sold under the n a m e of the
Chinese P u z z l e Box a n d the principle will fool those w h o t h i n k
they k n o w all a b o u t trick boxes.
The rubber mechanism is discarded from eight o f the butterflies;
four of these are used for the vanish from box, and the remaining
four are pasted permanently upon tray, i.e., w h e n flap is closed.
Prior to the performance, the four butterflies w i t h rubber attach-
m e n t are w o u n d up tightly and inserted under the hinged flap,
which is held closed w i t h small c a t c h . . . . T h e arrangement briefly is
as follows: under t h e hinged flap are the four butterflies all set
for flying, o n face of tray are the four permanent m o u n t e d butter-
flies, then over this is placed the loose flap. I m i g h t here m e n t i o n
t h a t the tray should be of the shallow variety, and preferably
painted dead black.
A MANIPULATIVE CIGAR
A l t h o u g h this prepared cigar was originally devised for the
production of cigars from the air, it has proved an excellent aid
to wizardry in m a n y other effects, and I pass it along in the hope
that magicians will f i n d m a n y uses for it.
How it is Done:
T h e requirements for this novel problem, are a length of rope,
approximately fifteen feet, a short piece of rope formed into a loop
by means o f adhesive tape or rope cement, t w o pair o f scissors
and a prepared paper bag.
T w o paper bags are required for the construction of the prepared
bag. First cut about t w o inches off the top o f one b a g then
push this inside the other bag. Paste along three edges o f bag at
top, leaving one side open (see s k e t c h ) . It will n o w be seen t h a t
by drawing forward the top of inner bag w i t h t h u m b of left hand,
any article dropped therein falls d o w n and rests concealed in the
c o m p a r t m e n t at b o t t o m of bag.
To prepare first cut off about five feet of rope from t h e fifteen-
feet coil, tie a short piece of rope around the centre forming a
fake k n o t and deposit this rope in the paper b a g ; i.e., in the bag
proper, n o t in false b o t t o m . Coil of rope is on table, and small
loop in a convenient pocket. T h e reader may introduce his
favourite routine for the cut-and-restored rope, b u t I will explain
a simple version for the sake of completeness.
T o perform: Have spectator come forward and assist in the
problem, hand him the coil of rope and scissors, requesting him
to cut rope through the centre so that each will have about five
feet of rope. M e a n t i m e secure and p a l m loop of rope. Assistant
selects either half of rope he wishes, and gives you the other.
Pass rope i n t q right hand at same t i m e slipping end of rope
through t h e small loop w h i c h is k e p t concealed in hand. Explain
t o assistant that you will endeavour to teach h i m t h e famous
Indian Rope Trick, and that he has to do exactly the same as you.
Place the t w o ends of rope in left h a n d , then slide right hand
along the rope to centre, carrying loop along under cover o f h a n d ;
transfer rope to left hand and cut through the centre; really this
is the loop. These moves are made q u i t e slowly and assistant
repeats them w i t h his rope. Rope is then tied at the c e n t r e —
use your o w n m e t h o d here to form a fake knot. Performer then
exhibits his rope in right hand, and assistant does likewise. You
then proceed to either trim off the fake knot, or cause it to
visibly vanish (according to fake knot u s e d ) , finally restoring the
rope in o n e length again. Pull on rope, then toss it o u t to
audience. Assistant then proceeds to restore his rope, b u t w h e n
))
INTERLUDE
T H I S is a further, revised edition of this
popular effect. Consists of eight large
" posters"—when one is held over the
other they read differently, to the amuse-
ment of the audience. Makes a novel and
amusing " break " in any programme.
" MISSING
chosen one is indeed missing.
He now offers the sum of fifty pounds if
he fails to produce the chosen name from
FILM the cards in his left hand. He glances
through them and picks out one, which he
boldly affirms is the one selected. The
STAR " selector, however, denies this. Performer,
slightly disconcerted, remarks that he has
not said just when he will produce the
MYSTERY chosen name, and again shows a card as
the selected one. Again the selector says
this is the wrong card. The performer
makes several further attempts, and finally
runs through all the cards, but the chooser
says that his card is not there. Apparently
the trick has failed, but now the performer
has a brain-wave and states that sometimes
the card gets caught in passing up his
sleeve—he searches his coat and eventually
produces the chosen card from his armpit.
And now, to finish effect, he picks up the
rejected cards, remarking that he still cannot
understand how he failed to produce the
selected name. He again shows the rejected
cards, separately, calling out the names—
and as he does so he lays them out on
table (or stand) to overlap; and slowly
THE CHOSEN NAME IS MADE UP BY
THE INITIAL LETTERS! The conclusion
is shown in the illustration.
This effect is extremely easy to work, and
can if necessary be done with audience all
round. Only the pack is required, which
can be carried in pocket, and the trick is
ready to work at a moment's notice.

A N E W CIGARETTE PRODUCTION
T h e magician removes a cigarette packet from his pocket and
finds that one solitary cigarette remains therein. He takes this
cigarette in his left hand, and tosses away the empty package.
Suddenly another cigarette appears alongside the one in his left
h a n d ; this cigarette is taken away by the right hand and placed
in a hat or cigarette box, b u t immediately another cigarette
appears in left hand. This cigarette is also removed and placed
in the hat, and another cigarette mysteriously appears, and this
is repeated indefinitely. The appearance of each succeeding
cigarette creates a very humorous effect. A t the conclusion of
the trick the cigaretttes are emptied o u t of the hat, or they may
be distributed amongst the audience.
How it is Done:
In addition to the four cards m e n t i o n e d above there is another
card w i t h a large ? mark thereon. T h e cards have the usual
bicycle-back design, b u t the Fu M a n c h u card is prepared by
pasting on t h e back, paper of the same design as that used on
display stand (Fig. I ) . A duplicate Fu M a n c h u card is also
required and this is p a i n t e d dead black o n reverse side, a pellet
of wax being stuck to centre of card. T h e t w o boards are
unprepared.
T h e arrangement is as follows: First ( 1 ) place Inspector
W e y m o u t h card face u p , then ( 2 ) Nayland S m i t h card face u p
( 3 ) Dr. Petrie card face out, and ( 4 ) ? mark card face o u t w i t h
Fu M a n c h u card face o u t directly on top of same. T h e duplicate
Fu M a n c h u card (black-backed) is face d o w n on table, boards
and elastic bands lying alongside.
To present: Direct attention to the famous characters reposing
on display stand, then pick u p the boards and remove elastic
bands therefrom. Show first one board on both sides then place
it d o w n on table directly on top of Fu M a n c h u card, press so
t h a t pellet of wax causes card to adhere to board. Show t h e
second board on b o t h sides, then immediately pick u p first board
and place it on top of board N u m b e r One, thus bringing the
Fu M a n c h u card secretly between the t w o boards. N o w encircle
the boards w i t h the rubber bands, passing them around in all
directions; this represents Fu M a n c h u ' s stronghold, and is given to
a spectator to guard. Good comedy can be introduced by furnish-
ing the spectator w i t h pistol, and instructing him to shoot at
sight if he ever catches a glimpse of Fu M a n c h u . A t this p o i n t
I m i g h t also add that the gong and other effects introduced in
the radio broadcast can be used to good advantage t h r o u g h o u t
this problem, and add greatly to the effect.
Performer returns to the display stand and slowly turns each
card over so it is back out, at the same t i m e m a k i n g c o m m e n t s
about each of the c h a r a c t e r s — w h e n he comes to Fu M a n c h u
the t w o cards are turned around together. T h e cards are then
removed from stand one at a time, each character being named,
and cards are transferred to left hand, being held w i t h backs of
cards towards audience. W h e n Fu M a n c h u card is removed from
stand the ? card only is taken, the other card remaining on stand
b u t being invisible on account of back of card corresponding w i t h
background of stand. A u d i e n c e are then warned to keep an eye
on the wily Dr. Fu M a n c h u , performer blows the siren whistle
or may have someone off stage do this. The first card is then
drawn off, turned around, revealing Nayland S m i t h ; this card
is placed face o u t on stand. T h e second card w h e n turned
around proves to be Dr. Petrie, the third card, Inspector W e y m o u t h ,
each card being placed back on stand again. Excitement runs high
as performer holds t h e sole remaining card in his left hand, t h e
c u n n i n g Fu M a n c h u ; assistant is told to be on the a l e r t — s l o w l y
card is turned around revealing ? m a r k , and Fu M a n c h u has
escaped again. Spectator is then told to investigate t h e Doctor's
stronghold, and the rubber bands are removed and boards opened,
and inside is the grinning visage of Fu M a n c h u ,
THE CIGARETTE A N D NOTE
T h e performer remarks that he prefers to use borrowed articles
as m u c h as possible so he proceeds to borrow a cigarette, this he
lights and w h i l e enjoying a smoke he endeavours to m a n i p u l a t e a
money loan. Having been successful in borrowing a note, he wraps
it in a handkerchief and has a spectator hold s a m e ; accidents
will happen however, and the note mysteriously disappears. T h e
cigarette w h i c h performer has been smoking then fails to draw
properly and u p o n investigation the missing note is f o u n d em-
bedded in the cigarette. T h e bill is then returned to its rightful
o w n e r — o r a t least to the gentleman w h o lent it.
H o w if is Done:
T h e requirements are a double handkerchief w i t h slit in centre,
also a Harlequin Cigarette Holder. Most Harlequin cigarette
holders have a slot c u t near the end as in Fig. 1 ; however, there

may b e some models w i t h o u t this preparation and such being the
case it will be necessary to get busy and do the needful w i t h a
sharp file. A tiny rubber b a n d on holder completes the
preparations.
A t t h e commencement a cigarette loaded w i t h n o t e is con-
cealed w i t h i n t h e Harlequin cigarette holder, the cigarette being
retained therein by rubber band around slot. Holder is on table,
and in right coat p o c k e t is a box of matches or cigarette lighter.
The w o r k i n g is as follows:
First of all m a k e an appeal for the cigarette and w h e n this is
f o r t h c o m i n g take Harlequin Holder in left hand a n d borrowed
cigarette in right, apparently insert the cigarette in holder, b u t
w h a t actually h a p p e n s is this: H a r l e q u i n holder is held upside-
d o w n in left h a n d , the right hand is brought u p towards m o u t h
of holder, at same time borrowed cigarette is t h u m b - p a l m e d ,
rubber band is rolled back off slot and prepared cigarette slides
o u t of holder, this of course being concealed by right hand. Rubber
b a n d is rolled over slot again so t h a t cigarette is held securely
in holder and can b e smoked in the regular m a n n e r . Left h a n d
places holder between lips, right hand goes to pocket, leaves
borrowed cigarette therein and brings forth matches w i t h w h i c h
cigarette is then lighted. This very simple switch of cigarettes
takes b u t a fraction of a second, the moves are perfectly natural
and there is nothing to detect.
I m i g h t here m e n t i o n another point in favour of the Harlequin
cigarette holder. Those readers w h o have had occasion to use a
prepared cigarette will agree that it calls for very careful handling
w h e n in transit, then prior to the performance it must be care-
fully stowed away in a ccrtain pocket and care exercised to
prevent it being prematurely broken, yet w h e n finally produced,
the cigarette is q u i t e often reduced to a mere shell of its former
self, about fifty per cent, of the tobacco having been shaken o u t
in spite of all care and precaution. You will therefore see that
once the prepared cigarette is inserted w i t h i n the holder, and
rubber band adjusted, it is thoroughly protected and it is not
disturbed until the switch is actually m a d e w h e n it is revealed
to the audience in perfect shape.
So m u c h for the switch, which is really all that I w a n t e d to
convey to y o u ; however, having started to explain the trick I
guess I will have to finish the job.
Having borrowed a note the performer next requests someone
to write d o w n t h e serial number w h i c h h e proceeds to read o f f ;
actually t h e numbers he quotes are those upon his own note w h i c h
is w i t h i n prepared cigarette. Borrowed note is t h e n folded and
wrapped in handkerchief, being pushed through the slit, and is
held by assistant from audience. After a certain a m o u n t of
humorous business with assistant the note disappears from hand-
kerchief; performer endeavours to borrow another b u t his appeal
falls on deaf ears. Finally the performer pretends that his cigarette
is n o t drawing properly so he extracts it from holder, he squeezes
the cigarette and feeling something firm inside he hands cigarette
to assistant to investigate. After some by-play, assistant is
finally persuaded to break open cigarette and inside he finds the
missing note. Serial n u m b e r is verified and note is returned to
the lender.
Most readers will prefer to change the routine slightly so that
the original borrowed note is returned to its owner at the con-
clusion of the problem; if so, then it will be necessary to call upon
the services of your t h u m b - t i p and a l s o — w e l l , w h y should I say
any more, you all k n o w h o w to do it, and besides, since the
depression, it's pretty hard to borrow anything, so after all w h y
not work the card in cigarette instead—personally, I m u c h prefer it.
A MATRIMONIAL PROBLEM
This is a novel and simplified version of the popular hand-
kerchief routine " M r . and Mrs. G r e e n . " The effect will be under-
stood by reading the patter presentation.
The requirements are as follows: ( A ) A set of the Double
Coldin " Colour C h a n g i n g Handkerchiefs, a green and a w h i t e
handkerchief tied together changes to t w o green silks. (B) A
dye tube and front page from N e w Yorker (or other) m a g a z i n e .
In the top c o m p a r t m e n t of dye tube are three silks ( t w o green
silks w i t h a w h i t e silk between a'la 2 0 t h Century Handkerchief
Trick.) ( C ) A mirror glass, in rear c o m p a r t m e n t of w h i c h is
concealed t w o green silks w i t h a string of tiny green silks between
t h e m . (D) O n e w h i t e silk, and a handkerchief vanisher completes
the requirements.
Patter and Presentation:
M y next experiment is in the nature of a magical sketch, and
is entitled " A M a t r i m o n i a l P r o b l e m , " in Three Acts. In the first
act w e meet t h e hero, A b r a h a m Creen, this is M r . Green, the
boys all call h i m A b e . (Hold u p colour change silks and point
to green s i l k ) . T h e heroine is a sweet and innocent maiden by
the n a m e of A n n a W h i t e , this is A n n a (point to w h i t e s i l k ) .
N o w A b e an' A n n a (a b a n a n a ) h a n g o u t w i t h a b u n c h , b u t you
can easily tell they are sweethearts by the way they are clinging
to each other. T h e young couple have been going together for
years and finally they decide to get married, so off they go to
the church, the minister says " Bless you m y children " (stroke
hand d o w n silks c h a n g i n g both to green silks) and they become
A b e 'an A n n a Green (a banana green) I m e a n . . . M r . and
Mrs. Green. A f t e r the w e d d i n g ceremony the happy couple go to
N e w York for their honeymoon (pick u p N e w Yorker cover and
form it into a tube, around the dye tube. Push the t w o silks into
the tube until the three silks are forced out of dye tube into the
paper, the dye t u b e should then be disposed of as paper t u b e is
placed d o w n on table. It is advisable to hold the paper tube in
shape w i t h an elastic band, or c l i p ) . Here w e see t h e m entering
t h e t u b e as the curtain rings d o w n on the First A c t . (Here t h e
performer makes c o m m e n t s similar to intermission remarks in
" First Nighter " radio programmes.)
N o w for the Second A c t of " A Matrimonial P r o b l e m . " Every
play has a villain, b u t in this case it is a v i l l a i n e s s — M r . Green's
Mother-in-law, O l d Mrs. W h i t e , here she is. Mrs. W h i t e is a
mischievous old lady w h o is always poking her nose into other
peoples' business, and not wishing to miss any of the f u n she
decides to follow the newlyweds. (Vanish w h i t e silk.) W e hurry
back to N e w York and you can imagine the surprise the honey-
mooners got as they emerged from the tube and f o u n d old Mrs.
W h i t e between t h e m . ( W i t h d r a w the chain o f three silks from
paper tube, showing the latter empty, then b u n c h u p the silks,
m a k i n g sure t h a t the w h i t e silk does not show. Insert the silks
in mirror glass, same can be shown freely all around, and then
w h e n replaced on table the c o m p a r t m e n t containing M r . and Mrs.
Green and Family should be at front.) T o m a k e a long story
longer they all decide to return home, and to avoid the embarrass-
m e n t of domestic quarrels w e bring d o w n t h e curtain on the
Second A c t .
N o w for the Third and last act of " A M a t r i m o n i a l P r o b l e m . "
O n returning to the home of the Greens several years later we
find that Old Mrs. W h i t e has departed, leaving only M r . and Mrs.
Green . : . and of course, all the Little Greens . . . and they
lived happily ever after. ( W i t h d r a w chain of green silks from
glass and hold outstretched between b o t h hands.)
IMPROMPTU MAGIC
Just t w o i m p r o m p t u or after-dinner tricks, b u t they are good
ones, they were shown to m e several years ago by my good
friends Sid Lorraine and Murray Sumner, b u t inasmuch as they
d o not seem to be k n o w n amongst magicians, I a m t a k i n g the
liberty of explaining them herein.
The Lady in the Bath:
A highly-polished silver spoon is required to get the best effect
o u t of this novel stunt. Hold the spoon upright in the left hand,
place the knuckles of second and third fingers against back of
spoon, then work the knuckles of first and fourth fingers in a
back and fore motion, and the result is a perfect illusion of a lady
taking a b a t h . It is impossible to explain the correct angle to
hold right hand b u t this is easily discovered after a second's
trial. ]ust try o u t this novel stunt and I'm sure you'll like it.
Bending the Fork:
Fork is picked u p and apparently gripped securely in b o t h hands
— l e f t hand grasps fork at the top, and directly below the fingers
of right hand take a firm grasp. Y o u then place the fork prongs
on table and exercising pressure, the fork is seen to suddenly
bend and double completely u p at fork end, m u c h to the amaze-
m e n t of spectators. Fork is then straightened o u t again and
passed for examination. W h i l e the fork appears to be grasped
firmly by both hands it is really held only by little finger of right
hand w h i c h curls around handle of fork a t the b o t t o m , close to
prongs. Heavy pressure is then apparently exercised o n fork
prongs, hands are then brought d o w n sharply on table, fork is
allowed to flop d o w n straight on table b u t as the hands are still
retained in an upright position it appears as if stem o f fork is
still held and p r o n g portion of fork is bent flat on table. This is
a perfect illusion of fork being completely bent. Try it o u t w i t h a
fork, it's a dandy.
Before the audience have time to recover from their surprise
fork is picked u p and apparently straightened. A good follow-
u p for this item is to work the visible bending process w i t h fork,
similar to that in w h i c h a lead pencil apparently become soft and

Effect:
The magician pretends to remove a cigarette paper from his
pocket. H e then opens an imaginary package of tobacco and
pretends to fill the imaginary paper w i t h the tobacco. He then goes
through the actions of hand-rolling a cigarette and places the
imaginary cigarette b e t w e e n his lips. A n imaginary m a t c h is
then taken from the vest pocket and this the performer apparently
strikes on the sole of his shoe. To the complete surprise of the
audience a f l a m e appears at performer's finger-tips, and w h e n this
is applied to the imaginary cigarette the audience receive a second
surprise for they f i n d that the magician is actually s m o k i n g a real
cigarette w h i c h has materialised from nowhere. A third surprise
a n d climax arrives w h e n the cigarette mysteriously disappears
again, thus proving t h a t it was all imagination.
How if is Done:
Reference to the illustrations will reveal the construction of the
box. The back and front of the box are removable, sliding in and
o u t of grooves in the sides of box. To the rear of back board a
container is attached for holding the necessary load. T h e work-
ing is as follows: First remove the front board, allowing audience
a clear view into the interior of box, then remove back board
w h i c h leaves only the skeleton frame of box. In re-assembling the
box the board w h i c h was originally at the front is inserted into
the grooves at back of box, and t h e original back board is slid into
the front of b o x ; this, it will be noted, brings the load directly
inside the box and ready for production,
If the reader possesses a W o n d e r Screen, or other type of suit-
able production apparatus, it may b e substituted in place of the
foregoing box.
To construct t h e models of the newest automobiles for produc-
tion it is necessary to procure lists or catalogues w i t h all the
latest cars in c o l o u r — t h e s e are pasted on t h i n cardboard and
neatly cut out. To m a k e the cars stand erect on table w h e n
produced, a folding flap may be attached to rear o f cut-out or,
if preferred, m a k e several wooden bars w i t h grooves cut in centre
and have these on the table ready for display of cars. T h e models
are inserted in groove and remain upright.

How it is Done:
In Fig. I is a simple frame for the appearance or vanish of a
picture. This consist of t w o cardboard photograph m o u n t s pasted
back to back.
If t h e reader possesses any other type of f r a m e for the appearance
of cards, pictures, etc., it will n o d o u b t serve the purpose.
In addition t o t h e above-mentioned frame a Devil's Handker-
chief is required, also a shallow cardboard box m a d e on the
principle of a flap-card box. Three M i c k e y M o u s e pictures exactly
alike are also necessary, and these can be obtained by purchasing
three Mickey Mouse Cartoon Books from the stores.
First m o u n t the three pictures on fairly stiff cardboard. Cut
one picture into pieces in jig-saw fashion (this w e will call
picture No. 1 ) . Take another picture and w i t h a sharp knife
cut a small portion o u t of it near the centre, t h e n w i t h pen a n d
ink m a k e lines over the balance of picture so t h a t it has the
appearance of a mass of jig-saw pieces all fitted together. This
looks very deceptive if properly done. (This w e will refer to as
picture No. 2 . ) The remaining picture ( N o . 3 ) is retained com-
plete w i t h o u t preparation of any k i n d . T o prepare: Place picture
No. 3 in front of photo-frame, and in c o m p a r t m e n t facing the
rear, place picture No. 2 (scored p i c t u r e ) . T h e small portion cut
from this picture is inserted in a paper clip sewn w i t h i n secret
pocket of Devil's Handkerchief. Picture N o . 1 (jig-saw) is in
shallow cardboard box w i t h flap on top of it.
Briefly the w o r k i n g is as follows: Remove photo-frame from
easel or stand, open and show Mickey Mouse picture. Remove
picture and replace closed photo-frame on easel, b u t first secretly
reversing it. Place M i c k e y picture in the cardboard box and w h i l e
explaining h o w jig-saw p u z z l e s are m a d e , casually reverse
box, then when it is opened the picture is seen to be cut jig-saw
fashion. Devil's Handkerchief is then shown and folded in the
usual manner, the jumble of jig-saw pieces being then deposited
in the secret pocket of handkerchief. As an afterthought, reach
inside handkerchief and remove one piece of puzzle, really special
piece from paper clip, and give this to spectator to hold. Pieces
of puzzle then vanish and handkerchief is opened out and shown
on both sides. Front of photo-frame is then opened revealing the
jig-saw puzzle completed with the exception of missing portion
held by spectator; this portion is inserted and it fits exactly
into the picture.

Notes and Hints: A s in the " Cards u p the Sleeve," the exact
routine is subject to u n l i m i t e d variation, and once given the m e t h o d
it is u p to the individual performer to arrange his o w n routine.
Considerable experimenting has been done w i t h the view of con-
structing a self-contained cigarette case t h a t would automatically
effect the change from ten to four cigarettes, b u t I finally dis-
carded all mechanical cases in favour o f a n unprepared case;
this can be handled freely at all times, can be given into the hands
of audience if desired, and is much more convincing for close-up
work than a mechanical case. W i t h regard to the switching of
one cigarette case for the other. A l m o s t any m e t h o d for exchang-
ing one pack of cards for another may be used for switching cases.
Aft^j- distributing a few cigarettes in audience it is easy to switch
cases in vest pockets w h e n returning to p l a t f o r m . A g a i n , cases
could be switched via black art well, or tray w i t h recess. And
again, if a rack is used for displaying the cigarettes after produc-
tion an excellent switch can be m a d e on rear o f this stand w h e n
setting it on table at c o m m e n c e m e n t . For t h e visible vanish from
hand I w o u l d recommend t h e f a k e cigarette as explained in
" M u l t i p l y i n g Cigarettes." This is a n improvement over the rubber
cigarettes and t w o of these fakes and t w o genuine cigarettes are
ideal for the visible vanish of the four cigarettes from the hand.
Since writing u p this effect a T o m Sellers' pocket trick has been
placed o n the market by Davenport, using small coloured sticks,
these I believe are about the size of cigarettes a n d t w o fakes
u t i l i z i n g this principle go w i t h the o u t f i t .
If the performer is adept a t cigarette m a n i p u l a t i o n s he m a y
discard the four rubber cigarettes and use genuine ones, causing
the four cigarettes to vanish from left h a n d by means of sleight-
of-hand.
I t is advisable to p a i n t the ends of the rubber cigarettes to m a t c h
the tobacco in genuine cigarettes, especially if accustomed to work-
ing a t close quarters.
