Preamble
This mod idea is made to commemorate the independence of Indonesia.
In this mod you can play as Indonesian natives or as colonizer. The mod will be
made for AOE III + expansions.

The first version of the mod is called Premiere, for it is the first time it is
aired in the world. In the Premiere, there will be 4 new Javanese civs, replacing
4 original European civs. In addition, Dutch has been revamped into a half done
Netherlands-Indië, having a new flag and et cetera.

The focus of the Premiere is in the Java War, also known for nationalists
as the Diponegoro War. The belligerents of the war were Dipanegaran Faction,
which was a group of rather unconsolidated rebel armies, against a Royal
Alliance, consisting of Yogyakarta Sultanate, Surakarta Sunanate, Praja
Mangkunegaran, and Netherlands-Indië itself. The war lasts

Casus Belli of the war was a road building by the Netherlands-Indië

across a piece of Prince Dipanegara’s property, containing his ancestor’s tomb.
In the end, the death of Hamengkubuwana III caused a rivalry between
Dipanegara and his younger half brother from the Queen Consort,
Hamengkubuwana IV, and later, to his half nephew, the infant
Hamengkubuwana V.

The war span from 1825, started by the siege of Yogyakarta by General
de Kock in 25th of September, to 1830, in a negotiation – which was rather a
trap – in 1830 in Kedu Residency, Magelang.

12.Soldat Sekul

In 1855, Mangkunegara IV(reign 25 March 1853 – 2 September 1881)

reformed the Mangkunegaran Legion. He used European military tradition to
train his army (the only Javanese state whose army was not disbanded in 1830
was Mangkunegaran). He also translated many European military discipline
book into Javanese language. The book was named Layang Pranatan Soldat
Sekul.

To translate it, he was helped by Carl Friedrich Winter (1799-1859). The

book was used to train Mangkunegara’s army, making the strongest army in
southern Java. The legion also helped the colonial government in their battle
against Japan in 1942.

A building named Kavallerie-Artillerie building was located near Pura

Mangkunegaran. The building served as the headquarter of the legion, but is
now left rotten.

Kavallerie-Artillerie Building is now a house of some small families who don’t

even know the origin of this glorious barrack

13.Sugar Factory

Sugar had been Netherlands-Indië main goods in the 1850’s on,

surpassing those spices from eastern Indonesia. To fullfil the international need
of sugar from sugar cane, the colonial government opened and planted a lot of
sugar plantation all over Sumatera and Java. And to support this, they opened
too a lot of sugar factory.

Seeing this chance of business, Adipati Mangkunegara IV (reign 25

March 1853 – 2 September 1881) opened two sugar factory to support the
colonial government. The two sugar factories are Colomadu Sugar Factory and
Tasikmadu Sugar Factory. Sugar was the second most important commodity in
Java after rice. Its production in 1876 to 1880 was 233.000 metric ton, followed
with coffee.

Superstition and kejawen tradition, however, still affected these factories.

They opened for production only in Javanese days of Legi (lit. Sweet), which
means once in five days. Mangkunegara IV imported steam machines from
Europe to support his factories. Alongside with these sugar factories, he also
owned an Indigo Factory, built in 1880 to support his ancestor’s indigo
plantation.

In the game, it is a building which slowly spawn a crate of food, wood,

and coin. A lot of upgrade is available to increase its production and efficacy.

Civilians
1. Coolie

In SoI, Coolie refers to those native people who were forced to work for
the Netherlands-Indië in their project. This kind of work was known as Rodi
Working or in Indonesian as Kerja Rodi. One example of the worst Rodi
Working was the construction of the Great Post Road which span from
Buitenzorg to Panarukan in North Java, now known as Jalur Pantura (Pantai
Utara – Northern Coast). It continued the previously existed Anyer-Batavia road.
The route was build under the command of Governor-General Herman Willem
Daendels in 1808.

At the earlier record of this work, these people were not paid at all. Only
after the construction of the road in Karangsambung these people were paid.
And the payment was not silver or gulden, but only 10 cent per capita daily and
rice and salt weekly.

In the game, Coolie will act as the main gatherer for Europeans
(Netherlands-Indië, British, and Portuguese). This, however, will be
implemented in the next version of the mod.

2. Germa

Germa means hunter. Back then, hunting (Krapyak in old Javanese

language) was a luxurious activity, done by and only by the king. The
Yogyakartan Sultan, for example, had a hunting lodge in a deer forest south to
his palace; the hunting lodge is now known as Panggung Krapyak. Javanese
hunting is peculiar, they don’t hunt with bow like other Asian, not with
blowgun like Dayak People, and not with gun like European. Instead, they
chase to their prey with a small blade named keris.

In the game, germa is a mounted villager which is a lot more reliable than
regular warga in hunting. However, it doesn’t have ranged attack. It can be sent
from HC or trained in Panggung Krapyak. Only Erucakran can’t access this unit.

and cost 5 population. The unit resembles the rebels’ lack of food resource and
gathering, who instead relied on local village’s supply.

6. Kyai

Kyai is a Javanese word for a pious Javanese man. Some most important
kyai were Wali Songo, the seven Islamic missionary to Java. A Kyai is a man
who has learnt about Islamic principles and laws, he usually lives in a Pesantren
– that is an Islamic counterpart of Monastery – and teaches Islamic knowledge
to Santri – an Islamic counterpart of Bruder.

They are usually quite rich compared to other people and are capable to
go for Pilgrimage to Mecca. Once they return to their homeland, they will use a
title in front of their name, Haji.

In the game, like other healers, they cost 200 coin and are limited to 5.
Erucakran, however, can access 7 and will increase as they age up.

In 1827, Hagenman writes that Dipanegaran Rebels were as pious as their

leader and would do a daily prayer when the time comes. Most of them were led
by imams (Kyai). A kyai’s command was as strong as a prophet’s command and
might cause a brutal action.

7. Pemberontak

Pemberontak is just an Indonesian translation of rebel. It resemble a

warga who supported Dipanegara. In 1827, Hagenman writes that the rebels
were armed with keris, spear, sword, gun, and other weapons. They acquired
gun and ammunition after defeating Netherlands-Indië’s army. They use
anything they own or take the clothing from every enemy they killed. There is
no difference of friend or foe. Friend will follow Dipanegara, leave their village,
and join the rebellion.

Everyone take care of themselves and gather food for themselves. If there
is no food, they will eat edible roots and leaves. They do not know military
discipline and administration.

Militaries
Artillery
1. Cetbang

Cetbang is a medieval naval gun employed by Majapahit and Bintara

navy. While some remain are continued to be used, it is no more produced in
Colonial Java. Later, it ceased to be a weapon and rest as a heirloom.

2. Kyai Keramat

Every Sultanate in Indonesia has their own most sacred cannon heirloom.
Yogyakarta has Kyai Sapu Jagad (lit. Universal Broomer), Surakarta has Nyai
Setomi, Banten has Ki Amuk, and Deli Medan has Meriam Puntung. Batavia
also has one cannon named as Si Jagur, which is used as its portrait. To make
these cannons into one unit to simplify the game, they are all called as Kyai
Keramat in SoI. It is mostly based on Si Jagur with brass color like Ki Amuk.

Bamboo gun is actually not a combat artillery but rather a recreational

weapon. It is made from a dried bamboo and uses black powder as its
ammunition. Being made from mere bamboo, it is very weak compared to other
cannons.

Ramadhan before the Maghrib Adzan.

6. Nyai Kuningan

Javanese people in the time of Java War was divided into two groups, the
pious Islamic Javanese and the traditional Islamic Javanese. All Royal Javanese
family, however, adhere to traditional Javanese Islam, which inculturates some
Kejawen traditions into Islamic faith. One of these traditions is to keep
heirlooms, name them, keep them like human, and even wash them monthly.

One kind of the heirlooms is cannon. Like human, they are named as
male and female. The male one is entitled Kyai and the female one is entitled
Nyai. These cannon heirlooms spread all over Java, mostly made from brass.

Nyai Kuningan (lit. Brass Lady) is named after that tradition and
resembles those brass cannons. These cannons are equal to Malay’s Lela,
which will be portrayed in later version of SoI.

Cavalry
1. Jayengsekar

Jayengsekar (lit. Flowery Spears) was a Netherlands-Indië military police

corps consisting of Javanese young nobility. They served the colonial rulers to
control cultivation and rebellion. They were hated by the farmers and Javanese
people for their brute action and service to the Dutch.

2. Jaran Sentot/Pinili

Alibasah Sentot Prawiradirja was known to have a brigade of mounted

gunsmen, a skill that wasn’t owned by everyone in the rebellion. These
cavalries used gun from their raid to the Netherlands-Indië’s army and used it
on a horse. They were among the most elite of Dipanegara’s army and thus,
among the most fearsome brigands. Sadly, they were memorized only as a name.

After a royal guard upgrade, they are called as Pinili, literally “The
Chosen One.”

3. Jemparingan

Javanese archery is very peculiar. Instead of shooting by standing, they

sit and cross their leg. Jemparingan is the Javanese name of this style of archery
and as the foot archer is already named Nyutra, it is used for the mounted one.

Struggle of Indonesia: Premiere; Catalog Page 18

4. Ladrang Mangungkung

All Javanese kingdom were said to have a female bodyguard brigade.

Surakarta has Jayengasta, Yogyakarta has Langenkusuma – which was said to
be mounted on horse, and Mangkunegaran has Ladrang Mangungkung Estri.
However, the most prominent of these female soldiers were the one serving
Mangkunegaran throne, who also fought in real battle.

Ladrang Mangungkung Estri was said to be even more competent than

those male bodyguards of the crown prince’s. They served the Duke of
Mangkunegaran both as palace maidens and also as armed bodyguard. Their
weapon of choice ranged from sword to musket, from spear to blowgun. While
in the palace, they also served as dancers around the king. There was a keris
hidden in their belly, which could be used anytime the king was attacked.

Ladrang Mangungkung was also inspired by Nyi Ageng Serang, a rebel

noble woman from Serang who supported Dipanegara’s rebellion. In game, it
acts as a mounted Estri, being faster and having its own pros and cons.

A portrait of Nyi Ageng Serang before the Java War. She was around 70’s when
she joined the rebellion. She was the only rebel leader that was not punished by
the Colonial Government, the reason being her old age. In the war, she fought
on the back of her horse with a lance on her hand and spirit of independence in
her heart.

Infantry
1. Bulkiya

Inspired by the Ottoman military, Dipanegara reorganized his

undisciplined rebel army into a more reliable soldiers. One of these army
brigade was Bulkiya. The real meaning of this name, as the name was pejorated
by Javanese tongue (just like how Dipanegara was pejorated by Chinese tongue
into Lipolik Golo), is from a Turkish word – Boluk. Boluk itself can be
translated roughly as company in English.

They used white turban and green uniform, the same as Turkiya and
Borjomu’ah. To to point out its elitary position, Bulkiya can be upgraded to
Borjomu’ah (in Indonesian it might be translated as berjamaah, lit. In group).

In game, it serves as Erucakran’s only gunpowder infantry. Also its most

reliable one.

5. Estri

All Javanese kingdom were said to have a female bodyguard brigade.

Surakarta has Jayengasta, Yogyakarta has Langenkusuma, and Mangkunegaran
has Ladrang Mangungkung Estri. However, the most prominent of these female
soldiers were the one serving Mangkunegaran throne, who also fought in real

hidden in their belly, which could be used anytime the king was attacked.

In game, Ladrang Mangungkung is used to portray those who fight on

horse and Estri is used to portray those who fight on foot. Both shared similar
statistic but have their own pros and cons.

9. Kompeni

The first time the Dutch came to Indonesia and Java, they introduced
themselves as the Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie – VOC. The
company’s name, however, proved too dificult for these “uncivilized” people.
In the end, their tongue pejorated it into a more tongue-friendly name, Kompeni.

Even after VOC disbanded, the Dutch were still called kompeni by the
Javanese. Their stereotype as greedy, brute, and evil last long. In game, it acts
as an infantry which is good against mercenaries.

14.Nyutra

Madura was always being a warring island, divided into four diferent
states. The four states were the County of Bangkalan, County/Duchy of
Sampang, County of Pamekasan, and Duchy of Sumenep. Sumenep was later
granted a position of sultanate by the Netherlands-Indië government.

Sumenep, didn’t like the three western states, was more Javanese than
Maduranese culturally. This made them made alliance with Mataram Sultanate
easily. In their alliance, they sent some mercenary archer troops from a region
named Panyutra. This troop, however, stayed in Mataram. The brigade then
evolved into three separate archery troops, known as Panyutra in Surakarta,
Nyutra in Yogyakarta, and Nyutrayu in Mangkunegaran.

It acts as an archer in the game. Its appearance is based mostly from

Yogyakarta’s Nyutra. In reality, there is no difference between red and black
Nyutra.

17.Sumoatmaja

The Sultan of Yogyakarta had a special corps of Nyutra named

Sumoatmaja. This corps of Nyutra was armed with sword and a round shield.
They were acted as a personal bodyguard of the sultan and in peacefull
condition, as dancers. They dressed just like another Nyutra, with the only
difference being their skin colored yellow from dye.

When Yogyakarta’s military was disbanded in1830 (to cope future

rebellion from Java), the corps was also disbanded. It was, however, not
reenacted in the modern time alongside Nyutra and other brigades.

20.Wirabraja

Wirabraja was one of the oldest Javanese military unit. It dated back to
the earlest era of Mataram Sultanate. Their weapon of choice was a long red
pike and their dress was among the most peculiar. It was nicknamed Lombok
Abang (which is also a name of different pikeman corps in the Duchy of
Pakualaman) for its peculiar chilli-like dress. Its hat was actually made to
resemble Kembang Turi, some kind of flower which is also used as a dish.
However, its all red colored dress made it looks like a chilli rather than a flower.
