to form-release agents
An overview of the characteristics and
applications of more than 50 products

orm-release agents or form
F oils cost but a small fraction
of the cost of the formwork it-
self, but they have a big influ-
ence on the quality and suc-
cess of the concrete surface.
Though no American Concrete In-
stitute or ASTM standards define
these products, common usage sug-
gests that form oils are petroleum
compounds originally designed for
other applications (such as diesel
fuel, heating oil, and lubricating
oils), and release agents are materials
containing proprietary reactive in-
gredients specifically formulated for
use on concrete forms. ACI 301-96,
“Standard Specification for Struc-
tural Concrete,” does, however, give
performance-based requirements for
release agents. Section 2.2.1.30 says
to use “commercially manufactured
form-release agents that will prevent
formwork absorption of moisture,
prevent bond with concrete, and
not stain concrete surfaces.”
Today, contractors can choose
from among hundreds of form-
release products, and new ones are
still being developed. Many changes
have been introduced as manufac-
turers have scrambled to meet fed-
eral and state environmental regula-
tions, particularly with respect to
volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
With the myriad form-release
products available, how do you se-
lect the best one for a particular ap-
plication? Here are a few of the fun-
damental questions you should ask:
n On what form surfaces can it be
used?
n Will it provide clean, easy release
without damage to either the con-
crete or the form?
n Will it produce a stain- and blem-
ish-free concrete surface?
n Is it compatible with admixtures
in the fresh concrete and with
surface coatings that may be ap-
plied later to the hardened con-
crete?
n Is it ready for use without site
mixing, and is it easy to apply at
anticipated jobsite temperatures?
n Is it user-friendly and compliant
with environmental regulations?
The table on pages 19-29 answers
some of these questions and sum-
marizes manufacturers' recommen-
dations for many currently available
form-release products.
How release agents work
Release agents are classified by
how they work rather than what
they contain. Two basic categories
are barrier agents and chemically ac-
tive agents (also referred to as reactive
agents). Some release agents are a
combination of the two types.
Barrier-type release agents create a
barrier between the form surface and
the fresh concrete, preventing the
concrete from sticking to the form.
Common examples of this type of
release agent are diesel oil, home
heating oil, paraffin wax, and motor
oil. They are widely used because
they are readily available and inex-
pensive. But to ensure form release,
they are applied in thick films, typi-
cally covering 200 to 600 square feet
per gallon. These heavy applications
can contribute to surface staining
and an increase in bug holes (small
surface voids) in the concrete. If the
coated forms are left for several days
before concrete placement, the oil
can evaporate, potentially polluting
the air. Depending on the extent of
evaporation, there may also be some
sticking of the concrete to the form.
Chemically active (reactive) release
agents come in many proprietary for-
mulations. As the name implies, the
active ingredient—typically some
type of fatty acid derived from plant
or animal sources—chemically com-
bines with calcium (lime) in the
fresh concrete. The product of this
reaction is a thin layer of grease or
metallic soap or salt, chemically sim-
ilar to a bathtub ring. This greasy,
non-water-soluble material permits
the form to release readily from the
hardened concrete. The reactive
fatty acid components generally are
biodegradable and not health or en-
vironmental hazards. The chemi-
cally active material may be dis-
solved in an oil- or water-based
carrier, or offered as a concentrate
that the user mixes with a suitable
carrier.
New VOC limits
Regulation of VOC emissions
from architectural coatings under
Section 183(e) of the Clean Air Act
will be enforced throughout the
United States beginning Sept. 13,
1999. Form-release agents, which are
classified by the act as architectural
coatings, are among the products af-
fected.
Although the regulations apply di-
rectly only to manufacturers, they
will set limits on what contractors
can buy as a release agent. The stan-
dard rule restricts form-release agent
VOC content to 450 grams per liter,
or 3.8 pounds per gallon, in any
product manufactured after the
compliance date. An article in the
October issue of Concrete Construc-
tion will discuss in greater detail how
this new regulation will impact con-
tractors.
